WAR data on FanGraphs
It's up on the player pages going back to 2002, as well as dollar values for each season based on the marginal $/win rates that teams were paying for that year.
For instance, Albert Pujols was worth +9 wins and $40.5 million last year. He's good.
David will have the data up on the leaderboards/team pages later this week, and we'll be adding pitching WAR in the not too distant future.

Very cool stuff.
I may not be up to professing my love straight away, but we’re at least at hearty mancrush

This seems as good a place as any to ask this.
I know Ryan Theriot took some crap as being overrated after ’07, but he was pretty damn valuable in ’08.
Do the smarter folks around here see this as repeatable or will this be an outlier for him?

From a sustainability standpoint,
Theriot is very much is very much a high contact guy who swung at fewer pitches out of the zone and walked more than ever in ’08. His BABIP the last two years were markedly different, causing a good deal of the difference. .340 last year, .289 the year before.
He certainly looked like he changed his approach some, but will most likely regress some in BABIP.
I would suspect he still ends up closer to 2008 than 2007, especially if he can continue to improve his plate discipline.
I’m just happy to be done with undergrad in Chicago so I don’t have to see mostly Cubs games with Brenly commentating (brutal) and of course the brutal Hawk and DJ for the Sox.

Fairly repeatable, with a bit of regression
but he should still be a valuable player as long as he can play a competent SS.

Thank you both.
I was a bit shocked he turned out so valuable last year.

I was hoping that the Cubs were a big fluke and that they'd collapse, but their lineup looks fine.

Especially with a potentially healthy Soriano... now if only they could figure out to not lead him off...

Except that Soriano is rarely healthy
but it doesn’t matter a whole hell of a lot because they have Johnson/Fontnote/DeRosa to pick up the slack

I said this on USSM
But Ichiro has been worth $100.0 million since 2002.
Way less than we’ve paid him.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

More, rather. We've paid him less. He's worth more than we paid him.
Wow, that really took the punch out of my remark.

Marginal $/win rate can't be the same for all positions, can it?
Could someone point me to any study done regarding $/win by position?
by Fogel on Dec 24, 2008 4:02 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Are you asking if it actually IS the same or if it SHOULD be the same?
It SHOULD be (pretty much) the same, but 1Bs and corner OFs definitely get paid more than they should.

I'm saying I'm skeptical that it's the same for all positions
and that seeing a position by position $/win rate would help understand if a player is truly over/undervalued for his position

Anybody know when pitchers are getting their WAR too?
by Edgar for Pres on Dec 24, 2008 8:28 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
StatCorner has WAR for pitchers.
Don’t know yet when fangraphs is getting it.

What do you think about adjusting WAR by using leverage?
Seems like a good practice since relief run prevention should be more important since it comes in important situations. Thoughts?
While we are on the subject has anybody looked at using leverage to adjust WAR for players that are pinch hitters. Just scanning the fangraphs charts it looks like some pinch hitters would get a 10% boast from accounting for this. This wouldn’t help tell you how “good” a hitter is but it would tell how valuable his contribution to the team was.
