Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Burke's Back, with Tacoma

That didn't last long. Perhaps because of our outpouring of support for Jamie Burke after he was non-tendered (no, not really), Jamie Burke has found himself a minor league contract with the Mariners.

So we have Clement and Johjima sticking around te big club for sure and Rob Johnson, Jamie Burke and Adam Moore hanging around in Tacoma. If we're going to carry a third-catcher that's not Chris Shelton, I think Burke fits the mold better than Johnson. For one, Burke's been around and knows some of the pitchers already. For two, Johnson probably benefits from the more reliable playing time. We'll see how this glut sorts itself out.

Hattip: Geoff Baker with the scoop.

How long do think it'll be before Jack Z. moves one of our catchers?

It seems as if we have quite a few that either are or project to be Major League catchers. Maybe Jack Z. could move one and get some players that could strengthen other aspects of our farm system or Major League roster.

I think Johnson's a goner

What else can he possibly prove in AAA?

by JonBBT on Dec 23, 2008 11:47 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Problem is,

You can’t count on Johjima rebounding or Clement sticking behind the plate just yet.

by Matthew on Dec 23, 2008 11:55 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True.

But we’re stuck with Joh for the next three seasons, as I doubt anyone will take on his contract. I suppose Johnson could come up if Clement doesn’t stick, but that still leaves Adam Moore. Sure, Moore still has to move up a few levels, but if past performance is any key, he should be ready before we know it.

What other options do we have, though?

Make him a $24 million dollar bench player? I’m ignorant of any other path we could take with him, as I’m unfamiliar with moves such as DFA’s and such.

he costs 24 million whether he plays or sits. Familiarize yourself with the term sunk cost.

If there is someone that can outproduce him, that someone should play.

He's being realistic, though.

If this were a sim league, sure, play the best guy. But we know teams don’t always do that. There are politics involved.

I think Kenji’s movable if you eat some salary. Maybe a lot of salary. And don’t ask for much in return. But I imagine there are teams out there that would take him as their starting catcher. He never walks, so maybe Dayton Moore would be interested.

"He never walks, so maybe Dayton Moore would be interested."

It’s kind of a joke, but I’ve had the same thought as well. If anyone, Moore might want him.

I'm sure people were saying the same thing about us last year.

Asst. GM: “The kid never takes a walk! How the hell do you expect to move him?!?”

GM(picks up phone and dials): “Get me Bavasi on the line, stat!”

I'm fine with playing someone above Johjima.

All I’m saying is we’re approaching a logjam at the catcher position (not a bad position to be in, if you ask me), and Johnson and Moore won’t wait for ever. Why not move one of them and see what you can get in return?

But there is an opt-out in his contract after '09

He has an opt-out after the ’09 season to go play in Japan. My fantasy situation is hoping the Ms reduce his playing time this year, he exercises his opt-out and packs his bags.

Really?

If so, you’ve just made my day

by Graham on Dec 23, 2008 2:25 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly.

I think this is what happens, similar to how Kaz left with time on his contract once it was clear management wanted him gone.

Times

Nero added that, while there is an opt-out clause following 2009, specific language in the contract limits the reasons why Johjima could leave.

“It has to do with something catastrophic happening to a member of his family, that would force him to return to Japan,” Nero said, declining to get any more specific. “Not him bailing because he’s unhappy.”

In any event, he added, Johjima is happy in Seattle, gets along with teammates and wants to remain with the ballclub.

The Mariners make it a policy to refuse to discuss any aspects of player contracts with the media.

But a club official with knowledge of the situation, asked about the existence of an “opt-out” clause, shrugged and said: “That’s up to Kenji. It’s not our decision.”

Nero insists the extension is “a fully guaranteed three-year deal.”

But that wouldn’t appear to preclude a negotiation toward a financial settlement between the sides if Johjima, increasingly squeezed for playing time by Jeff Clement and Rob Johnson — with minor-leaguer Adam Moore rising quickly — decides he’d rather play every day back in Japan. Johjima wouldn’t comment on what he’d do if he again finds himself on the bench next year.

“Ask me that next year if the situation comes up,” he said, through interpreter Antony Suzuki. “Then, I’ll give you my answer.”

That being said, I think Johjima might leave because it’s a “face” thing- he’d rather play and collect a smaller paycheck in Japan than sit and collect a bigger paycheck in the US.

I want to trade Johjima ASAP for all the obvious reasons

If Clement can put together half a year of decent hitting then I would think about trading him if we could get good prospects in return.

I’d rather rely on Rob Johnson and Adam Moore. Clement’s health and defense worry me a lot about his future value. His value should still be rather high though so I think we should see what we can get for him.

I hear he's working on a knuckleball

It’s really going to extend his career. Most knucklers have their best years after 30, you know.

More. He's already pitched in AAA while in the Angels system.

He beat Tacoma years and years ago in an extra-inning game.

Sweet!

I need to re-up my press pass for next season in Cheney, then!

Churchill has some GREAT Pat Borders stories. I’d like to be there for some Burke stories…

I'm happy, but a bit confused.

Johnson’s still there, and Adam Moore really needs to move up. Do they carry three so the M’s don’t have to?

If Johnson/Moore isn’t traded, then Burke might start somewhere else – like Jackson.

by marc w on Dec 23, 2008 6:47 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My guess is that Johnson and Burke battle out the backup spot in ST

It wouldn’t surprise me if the M’s carried 3 catchers and use Kenji and Jeff as DH frequently.

Yeah - that might make sense

Either way, Johnson/Burke can’t be on the same team.
