Saturday and all the roads on Capitol Hill are dangerously icy and the sidewalks snowpacked. This means it's time to lace up the cleats and take a nice long walk in search of the perfect onion rings. First get an iPod (or preferably a Creative mp3 Player) and queue up some walking music. If you have any high-quality giant headphones, now is the time to wear them because they will double as ear warmers.

Recommended tunes for walking in the snow:

American Analog Set ~ I'm the Postman

Lovage ~ Strangers on a Train

Lupe Fiasco ~ Day Dreamin' f. Jill Scott

Modest Mouse ~ Missed the Boat

The Shins ~ Sleeping Lessons

Blue Scholars ~ Bayani

Kings of Convenience ~ Gold in the Air of Summer

June Panic ~ Ghosts

Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter ~ Eisenhower Moon

Beta Band ~ Dry the Rain

Thom Yorke ~ Black Swan

The destination: The Deluxe (sure hope they're open!)

The goal: to drink beer and eat onion rings

The time: 4:30 pm today

Hi!

I’d go with American Analog Set’s “Weather Report” personally, but that’s just me. A nice list.

I’d love to go up to the big city and hang out at the Deluxe, but I cannot make it. Some other time, John – I’ll bring you a De Konink, as I promised many long months ago.

Kings of Convenience were pretty damned good, but with Erlend Oye doing other things, I guess they’re done.
Ooooh, the Beta Band. That’s damned good shit. Have you heard the Aliens, which is Gordon Anderson’s new(er) band? And he and his brother Kenny (aka King Creosote) put out tons of songs on the Fence Collective label. King Creosote is pretty good, albeit more folky than the Beta Band.

Wow... thanks for the excellent suggestions!

Also add to the playlist:
Beirut ~ Scenic World
Band of Horses ~ St. Augustine

Looking forward to the beer!

And lastly

Jim James cover of Going to Acapulco from the soundtrack of the Bob Dylan biopic: I’m Not There

by johnbai on Dec 20, 2008 11:24 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You know I'll be there.

Good list. I’ll add:

Association – Never My Love
Tom Tom Club – Genius of Love
Jesus and Mary Chain – You Trip Me up
Colin Blunstone – Caroline Goodbye
John Lennon – Jealous Guy
Camera Obscura – Eighties Fan
Frank + Nancy Sinatra – Something Stupid

Eighties fan is great

though I might go with ‘Happy New Year’ given the date.
‘Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi’ is such a good album.

It actually pushed my car while I was at a stop on some ice

There was about 6 inches of snow out there from earlier in the week

When the wind gusted it was blowing snow out of the trees, so I was being shoved all over by wind while stuck in a vicious wall of white. Terrifying, but incredibly exciting. This wind will be some shit though, since my dad’s house is surrounded by trees, which are frozen and covered in 6 inches of snow on all the branches

Woo, more snow!

Fantastic. If the meteorologists are right about 3-6 more inches, it’s going to be impossible to get to the Seahawks game tomorrow.

by Coach Owens on Dec 20, 2008 12:11 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I'd wager you won't make it

it’s supposed to get really nasty in OR/WA tomorrow, you may want to make alternate plans or delay by a day or two. Portland’s got 3 in of snow right now, there’s more falling, and it’s supposed to ice over later and do the same thing all day tomorrow.

These are songs I tend to want to listen to when walking in the snow. I've listened to all of them on the way to work the past few days.

The entire Country Teasers-Satan Is Real Again album.
A-Frames-Nobots
Brian Eno-Needles In the Camel’s Eye
Dead Moon-Black September
Superchunk-Hyper Enough

And as cliched as it is…

Halo Benders-Snowfall

More or less accurate than other sites?

Much more accurate, generally

At least for the current conditions. Wunderground uses local weather stations, including home-use ones that are set to upload, to provide very local conditions. Input your zip code and you’ll see which station it has picked. There is one, for instance, less than a mile from my house

LEAVE YOUR HOUSE DRESSED APPROPRIATELY FOR THE WEATHER. And when I ask you to please not hit the gas until you feel the tow strap take up slack and start to pull your car. Because I just spent 40 minutes cramming gravel and sticks under your tires. For the second time. DON’T FUCKING HIT THE GAS UNTIL I SAY SO YOU OLD FUCKING BAG OF BONES. Holy shit! From komotv.com
Blizzard conditions were reported overnight in Enumclaw, where wind gusts as high as 70 mph are combining with snow to make for near whiteout conditions and heavy snow drifts. Over in the tiny foothill town of Cumberland, an unofficial gust of 100 mph was recorded, knocking a large tree over onto a main road that just missed the town’s fire station.

My dad lives 3 houses over from this fire station. He said he’s got snow drifts of more than a foot at his back doorstep. He can’t even leave his driveway because the snow drift has nearly made the 3 foot uphill at the end of his driveway level with everything else. He drives a huge lifted truck and still can’t leave. Awesome

It’s called Medic. You get a bunch of sleds and a bunch of friends and climb a big hill. Once up there, have everyone but two people sled down in a race. when the stop they yell MEDIC and it’s up to the two remaining people to sled down as fast as they can and ram into the fallen. Rinse and repeat. It’s a great way to injure yourself and others
