According to the Worldwide Leader, Raffy Furcal is to be an Atlanta Brave once more. If you were the Atlanta Braves and had Yunel Escobar at shortstop, the perfectly average Kelly Johnson at second, and some interesting young outfield options, why sign Furcal? The rumor is that they will shift Furcal to second, where he should be an above average 2nd baseman defensively, but will lose some of the benefit of his arm. Kelly Johnson, not being a tremendous offensive 2b, will be even less valuable in a corner outfield spot, and would also rob playing time from a guy like Gregor Blanco or the BABIP magician Matt Diaz. What of Brandon Jones? Unless they have a trade lined up for Johnson that nets the Braves a reasonable starting pitcher, why sign Furcal?
Matthew's Update: Rosenthal Says it's the Dodgers. Apparently Furcal didn't want to play second base and leaned heavy on the Dodgers to match the Braves' offer when Furcal found out what Atlanta's plan for him was.
