Flashback: M's prospects, 2003
I pulled BA's 2003 Prospect Handbook off the shelf yesterday to see what they had to say about Franklin Gutierrez, and then moved over to look at their take on the Seattle system. They had the M's 9th in their talent rankings that year (having ranked them 2nd the year before); here were the players they tagged as our top 30 prospects:
1. Rafael Soriano, RHP
2. Chris Snelling, OF
3. Jose Lopez, SS
4. Shin-Soo Choo, OF
5. Clint Nageotte, RHP
6. Aaron Taylor, RHP
7. Travis Blackley, LHP
8. Rett Johnson, RHP
9. Greg Dobbs, 3B/OF
10. Jamal Strong, OF
11. Ryan Christianson, C
12. Luis Ugueto, SS
13. Willie Bloomquist, IF/OF
14. Ismael Castro, 2B
15. Kevin Olore, RHP
16. Michael Garciaparra, SS
17. Kenny Kelly, OF
18. Ryan Anderson, LHP
19. Jeff Heaverlo, RHP
20. J. J. Putz, RHP
21. Allan Simpson, RHP
22. Bobby Madritsch, LHP
23. Aaron Looper, RHP
24. Rene Rivera, C
25. Craig Anderson, LHP
26. Juan Done, RHP
27. Bobby Livingston, LHP
28. Jon Nelson, 1B/OF
29. Troy Cate, LHP
30. Ryan Ketchner, LHP
I was struck by this comment on Lopez: "Lopez' defensive abilities have been apparent since he made his pro debut. Managers said he had the best infield arm in the Cal League, and he has fine hands, range and actions at shortstop." Having seen him play short at Everett, I agree with that assessment; I still have trouble understanding exactly how that Lopez turned into this Lopez.
As for Gutierrez, there wasn't all that much of interest in the paragraph on him, but I was struck by this line: "There are some holes in his swing he needs to address, though the Dodgers think his aggressiveness is one of his strongest assets" (emphasis mine). That explains a lot.

This is why roster constructionbation is dumb.
Really interesting to look at though.

Yep.
Prospect lists are mighty depressing.
Sometimes they can be a fun trip down memory lane… I wonder what happened to Madritsch. If he had been able to stay healthy…

That's about my reaction, too.
Except that even more than Madritsch, I wonder how things went so wrong for Nageotte.

Seven out of ten pitches were sliders.
There’s only so much an elbow can take.

The similarities...
between Lopez and Triunfel at age 18 are pretty crazy. Lopez was significantly more advanced, though. Let’s hope Triunfel can take a better development path over the next 4-6 years. I think a bunch of us would be bummed if he ends up stalling out at league average.

Are any of these pitchers still in the organization?
After the Putz trade I can’t think of any still left. Someone in rehab maybe?

I think Ketchner's actually *back* with the M's
He pitched for us in AA last season, anyway, after having been gone for a couple years.

He's a minor league FA now though.
I don’t think he’d be Zduriencik’s kind of player. We’ll see I guess.
I really wanted them to give him a shot last season. Not as an audition or anything, just any sort of major league appearance. It’s not like we were going anywhere.

He's almost deaf right?
Or is that someone else?

Right, of course he is.
Yeah, I was hoping they would too.

Hmmm very interesting.
I kinda have to take “roster constructionbation” as Robert said with a grain of salt but still very fascinating and still fun to make predicions.
Some of those names I had sorta forgotten about…even if they made it to the major leagues for a stint…like Aaron Taylor…or Allan Simpson or Aaron Looper
and many who never made it are even easier to forget like Ryan Anderson…though I read that he went to a culinary institute to become a steak chef.
For some reason Ryan Ketchner doesn’t ring a bell…only “Mariner” pitcher from that list huh…

Aaron Taylor turned into Sean Green.
That’s something, isn’t it?
Ketchner was part of the Jolbert Cabrera trade. He’s a junkballer with a mediocre fastball, basically the system’s Bobby Livingston before Livingston was doing it (and Bobby turned out to be better at it, I guess). What made him interesting, to me at least, is that he’s almost completely deaf.

Yes, that's definitely something.
Although Sean Green isn’t with us anymore….
For some reason I remember Bobby Livingston so comparing Ketchner to him worked for me. And that is quite interesting that he is almost deaf. Would (well, I guess still could) have made one of those feel-good publicity stories that you could turn into a Disney movie.

Wow, I didn't even see The Ancient Mariner's post
but scrolled through this thread to see what you meant by that and alas, you’re quite right

This makes sense, oddly.

He only had 69 innings that year.
That may not be enough to qualify.

Or, if it was the 2003 prospect list...
in the same sense that the current top ten of Halman, etc, is the 2009 list, Felix hadn’t debuted yet.
