Hot Sexy New Update
From last Sunday:
Amaro hasn't had many conversations with Pat Burrell's agents, a sign that the Phillies aren't overly interested in bringing him back.
"I couldn't really put a percentage on it," Amaro said ambivalently.
The Phils want to get younger and more athletic, but Burrell won't be easy to replace.
Mission accomplished!

I dunno
The Phillies won the world series with a worthless lump of crap in left, who’s to say they won’t do it again? And there is considerably less room that Raul has to cover in that band box of a stadium compared to Safeco. Still a dumb move, but you could see why the phillies, and only the phillies wouldn’t put too much emphasis on LF defense.
Just because the Phillies have a bunch of super really awesome players doesn't mean that Raul is a sensible addition

I love that a team with Pat Burrell and Ryan Howard had an awesome defense.
Dewan has them as the best. DER has them as 10th.
Still, it speaks to the quality of the other guys that the team can be top-thirdish with two huge anchors like that.
Dewan's splits show why:
Total: +74
OF: -4
CINF: +7
MINF: +71!!!
Actually, please ignore "almost"
Utley has been +85 for the past three years, the best in baseball. So average it out and we’re looking at something like +28 per year. That still looks high to me, but whatever.
I think a safe bet is calling him between +15 and +25. UZR has him around +20 the past two years.
That's insane
You always hear about his bat, so I always kinda figured his D would be average, and even if it wasn’t the phillies would be happy with it, but christ that’s unbelievable.
How was he not the MVP this year? Pujols is no slouch, but 2B is a bit more valuable than first.
Instead he finished in 8th (?) place, miles behind Ryan "RBI" Howard...
At the very least, he should have been higher than Howard. Grrr….

They have a truely dizzying intellect.
The Phillies want to get younger & more athletic.
Burrell is on the wrong side of 31.
The Phillies replace him with Raul.
Wait, what?
“Mission Accomplished” awesome! The irony burns like hygiene.

To congratulate you on receiving our first round pick. Do us proud—the last time we picked up an excessively ancient type A free agent destined to break down midway through his contract (Tom Gordon), I believe it resulted in Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain, so you have a high bar to clear.
But at least saying his name a lot won’t get old, right? Right?
…
…Is there ANY consolation to be had? (well, besides the winning the World Series last year thing)
Glorious, glorious defensive blunders in gif form.
That is your consolation.
I like amazing catches viewed in person more
Than watching Raul or anyone else fall all over themselves. I am so very excited to watch this OF play D next year.
I second this.
Chavez/Gutierrez/Ichiro will cover some serious ground.

I can't even see who's in your pic.
Is that Chavez/Gutierrez/Ichiro?
It’s awesome, by the way.
And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic...
Zero picks in the first 60! Gillick yay!
But hey, you got a championship. Doesn’t get much better than that.
Not sure where to ask this
but what does everyone think of Jerry Hairston?
Hairston said he is picking between Seattle, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati.
This would be Jerry Jr.?
Or has Scott Hairston been around enough to be a FA?

In any case
I think they’re both useful players who would be good to have on the roster, for the right price.

Could be solid off the bench for the right price
He’s a black Jehova’s Witness version of Willie Bloomquist but effective. Last year he was somewhat awesome, but more than likely a small sample size. It seems in his career he’s only effective when he plays ~ 80 games with ~ 270 ABs. Pretty much a solid baserunner and good flexible fielder on the bench that won’t murder himself at the plate.
ah, here's the quote
“[Jay] Bruce said Hairston is considering Seattle and Philadelphia as well as the Reds. The Reds probably would offer the most playing time to Hairston, but these things often come down to money.”
