Dayton Moore channeling Bill Bavasi
The Royals sign HoRam and plan to use him in the rotation:
[Club] officials are convinced Ramirez can be an effective starter and inject a left-handed element into their rotation. He was 38-29 with a 4.55 ERA in 104 starts from 2003-07 for Atlanta and Seattle.“We expect Horacio Ramirez to be in our rotation next season,” Moore said. “He’s healthy, and some of our other guys have options. We like the idea of having at least one left-hander in our rotation.”
What an example of Bavasi-style results based analysis. Despite HoRam's lack of overall pitching skills, Bavasi thought HoRam was an unpolished gem because HoRam had some success in Atlanta. Predictably, HoRam stinks it up in Seattle so badly even Bavasi lets him go.
HoRam hooks up with KC on a minor league contract and stumbles into a lucky streak. Moore then trades him to the White Sox, and I'm thinking Moore's showing signs of a few functioning synapses when Moore takes the opportunity to flip HoRam to Kenny Williams based on a lucky streak. But no ..... it appears that Moore actually thought Ramirez was as good as his results in KC last year.
It was ugly when David Glass fired Allard Baird by stringing Baird from a tree, cutting off his nuts, and letting him twist while onlookers averted their eyes. But I thought that long-suffering Royals fans had a glimmer of hope with Dayton Moore coming on-board.
Looking at Moore in action though, we see things such as the Jacobs trade and this Ramirez signing. It's almost as if Moore's in a trance being led by the spirit of Bavasi.
I really feel sorry for Royals fans. (At least the ones who didn't post about Jacobs at FanGraphs. The KC idiots who did post there deserve Moore and more.) They've been through so much, and it looks as if they are yet consigned to damnation. No town, with the exception of Oklahoma City, deserves what is being heaped on KC.

Shudder
hindsight, foresight, Stevie Wonder sight, I still to this day don’t see how we justified trading Rafael Soriano for that waste of roster space

That whole thing about needing a left-handed starter...
Man, I remember when we had a GM who’d say stuff like that. Y’know. Roles, and how they’re important.
It’s silly.

This is a great insurance policy so they can trade Greinke to Atlanta for Jeff Franceour.

Bavasi would've tried to trade him for Andruw Jones...
Yes, the one that plays for the Dodgers.

How embarrassing for him.
I wish him the best, though. I love(d) watching him play.

The $9M/2yr deal for Farnsworth might even be worse than signing Ramirez for $1.8M
My only guess is that Moore is trying to emulate the pre-2007 Tampa Bay Rays, losing tons and tons of games and stockpiling top-5 draft picks.

i can only wonder what the addition of Rowdy Kyle Farnsworth will do to PECOTA and the royals.

I feel for you.
I lived in Missouri as a child and the Royals were my first team. It is pitiful what has happened since the 80’s.

Chuck LaMar, Part 2
Like LaMar, Moore is a product of the Braves scouting department.
Like LaMar, Moore loves tools and has done a fairly good job of stocking the Royals farm system with promising toolsy prospects.
Like LaMar, Moore will make a few reasonable moves that make you think he just might know what he’s doing.
Like LaMar, he’ll then make a series of costly blunders that negate the positives and then some.
Neither seems capable of intelligent/efficient roster building. Both love their ex-Braves. Both have employed Jose Guillen at his least productive. LaMar had Felix Martinez, Moore had Tony Pena, Jr. Both love long walks on the beach at sunset.
Now if Moore can land the next Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano, perhaps all is forgiven. Hell, just lock up Greinke.

Greinke loves long walks on the beach at sunset too.
Moore has to lock him up, it only makes sense.

And if anyone's a little vague on what I'm talking about...
Listen to this and this and read this.
Q: You were once called “the future of pitching.” Tell me, are we going to have flying cars in the future?
ZG: Yeah, we are.
Q: When?
ZG: Probably not too far away. About 10 years. That’s my guess.
Q: OK! I can hold out for 10 years.
ZG: Actually, probably longer than that.
Q: But, you said…
ZG: There definitely will be flying cars, but whether there’ll be flying cars for most people to use, it’ll probably take a long time to straighten everything out, all the rules and hassles. It’ll take a while to figure out how to keep people from crashing into each other.
Zack Greinke interviews are among the best kinds of interviews.
