OFFTOP 12.11.08 Brian Told Me To Edition

Hey--it's two weeks until Christmas!  And I haven't bought a single present yet.  For some reason the Christmas joy is escaping me this year.  Anyone have any suggestions on how to make it actually feel as though Christmas is coming?

If anyone wants to pretend they have a Macy's discount from now until next Monday (20% off almost anything in the store) and can get to the Bellevue Macy's, let me know and I'll give you the sales pass.  It's "Friends and Family" time and I suppose y'all count as friends.  Family is pushing it.

Oh, and living in suburbia without a car is much more of a pain than I thought it would be...

Star-divide

I have an interview at UW at ten.  Wish me luck.

Fortunately I don't have that

but I did have a moment of panic when I woke up and it was 7.50 because I’m usually at work by 7.30; took me a minute to remember that I’m not going to work today.

by acblue on Dec 10, 2008 10:03 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The writers Pixar employs are top-notch.

I just wish they worked for another studio that did hand-animated films. I feel that CGI really takes away from their efforts.

To me, hand animation tends to be more vibrant and timeless. I’m not even sure how to properly describe it, so I’ll use a still from a Miyazaki film.

by BrianL on Dec 10, 2008 10:10 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

And that's my problem.

Every time I watch a Pixar film I enjoy the story but the entire time I’m thinking “God damn, this would be three billion times more awesome if it was paired with Disney’s old animation studio or Don Bluth’s animation guys.”

I'm just not sure it would be.

All of their films are written with the idea of CGI animation in mind. They’re conceived specifically with that medium in mind. I don’t think Wallace and Gromit would be better if it was hand drawn because it came into the world of ideas as a stop-motion creation. Same deal with Pixar.

And I do agree with you on that note

But I still don’t see why it should matter as far as the story is concerned. To me it’s the same as you watching a black and white movie (take your pick of any classic) and thinking it’s no good because it would be a million times better in color

There's a place for CGI, though, and Pixar does it better than anyone.

I love hand drawn animation, don’t get me wrong. But just because I tend to prefer guitar based music doesn’t mean I don’t love Kraftwerk, too. It’s the same way with cinema; I’m not really interested in how you achieve the results you’re after, if you make an excellent film I’m going to love (or at least respect) it. Pixar has made excellent films more consistently than anyone in Hollywood these past 15 years or so, and I’m including people like Scorsese, Tarantino and Lynch in that statement. And I could understand disliking them if they had as their stated goal making hand drawn animation obsolete, but it’s quite the opposite; one of John Lasseter’s first moves as CEO at Disney was to fully reinvest in the hand drawn animation studio. They (or at least the people at the top) get it; if you’re better than anyone else at doing something (CGI in Pixar’s case, hand drawn in Disney’s) continue to do that.

by acblue on Dec 10, 2008 10:23 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

This is something that I'm never going to win

because I simply don’t find CGI to be visually pleasing. I acknowledge that Pixar does the CGI film as well as anyone in the industry, but it still doesn’t change the fact that I just don’t enjoy having a story presented to me in that manner.

Actually people using Netflix doesn't bother me.

People insisting that no one should ever go to a video store again because Netflix is better in every possible way bothers the hell out of me. If I couldn’t rent pretty much any movie I wanted for free whenever I wanted I would have a Netflix account too, I’m sure.

by acblue on Dec 10, 2008 10:41 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Netflix is a drag when it comes to getting a physical copy of a film.

Their streaming makes up for that, but if I didn’t have the bandwidth to stream I’d be going to a local video store instead.

by BrianL on Dec 10, 2008 10:42 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think that unless they figure out some way to shrink file sizes

I think they’re going to run into trouble with their streaming as connections get faster and faster. Imagine half the people in the world that rented the Dark Knight yesterday all trying to stream it at the same time.

by acblue on Dec 10, 2008 10:44 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The owner of my company

who also owns a much larger company that works with the studios pretty closely was part of a streaming feasibility study about a year ago, and basically they decided that any time a moderately popular film was released the internet as a whole would pretty much stop working.

That seems a bit far-fetched, but I think there have to be some serious improvements made before streaming VOD becomes the norm.

She decided to take her mom on a quick day trip on San Francisco. They went to Pier 39/Fisherman’s Wharf…and somehow decided to eat at Bubba Gump, because she “had heard such great things about it.”

[facepalm!]

In N Out is delicious, though, and that area of SF isn't known for its burgers.

To go to a place like Bubba Gump when you’re surrounded by SO MANY OTHER fine seafood restaurants is a travesty.

The Banyan tree is awesome,

but it was still so cool when all the shops were local.

You ever bike down Haleakala?

I do it every time I go to Maui.

My favorite Hawaiian spot -—> Kona

Hana for me.

Damn, i’d do anything to be on Ha’moa beach right now.

I like the west coast side of pretty much any part of Hawaii.

Hana is nice, but Haleakala makes for less sun in the afternoon.

You know, my Dada actually lived on the slopes of Haleakala,

and yet I never biked down it. Wanted to, but never did it. I did see the sunrise and a solar eclipse from up there though, so that was prettty cool.

That's about as positive as he ever gets about a game.

Same old complaint: Not much plot.

I don’t need a plot as long as I can plug away at hundreds of zombies with my automatic shotgun.

I had a hard time with Dead Rising.

My mind couldn’t handle the fact that I just couldn’t save everyone. About the third time I’m wandering through the courtyard with one woman on my back and another holding my hand while we get gunned down by convicts I just couldn’t take the stress anymore.

So I was pondering this for a few days...

What do you guys think of the NHL coming to Seattle? I mean, if their is discussion that Seattle will get the NBA again, and maybe a new stadium, do you think that deal could include a hockey team? I mean, I could think of a few towns with a hockey team which aren’t as good of hockey towns as Seattle would be.

Nashville
Dallas
North Carolina
Atlanta
Tampa Bay and South Florida
Phoenix (even though they have a new stadium)
Does Anaheim still need a hockey team?
Not sure if St. Louis makes a good hockey place or not.

But anyway, I could see them coming and becoming the NHL Thunderbirds, similar to the Sounders, and having quite a good following. Now Seattle sports fans’ loyalty will always be in question, but from what I’ve seen here compared to when I lived in Florida, is despite the team’s performance, the people always care about the home teams. And sometimes when the teams have nice shiny new stadiums, they will see the teams play even if they suck cough Mariners cough. Also, I feel being 300 miles and a border away from Vancouver is probably a long enough distance where it wouldn’t effect the Canucks too much.

Thoughts?

I'm all for the NHL coming along with getting the NBA back.

I think the region would support it, just based on how well we support minor league hockey (at least in the Everett area).

As much as I want it to happen so hard, it never will.

Any new areana built in the PS region is going to be built to NBA specifactions and there is no way they allow it to be designed so it can compete for winter dollars with a league that is now both more profitable and has trending the right way with attendance.

This was what screwed Key Arena though.

It was made “basketball only” on purpose, which limited it’s uses and ability to change with the times.

Not the NBA's problem.

The Renton arena was our best shot at both of them.

by Robert on Dec 10, 2008 12:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yea.

Do most of the “High School Musical on Ice” things happen at Key Arena, Tacoma Dome, or Everett event center?

by Fin on Dec 10, 2008 12:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree.

Let’s do this. Anyone know if there are talks for expansion at all?

by Fin on Dec 10, 2008 12:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Expansion almost killed the league the last time around.

And despite the league being the only thing close to the NFL in fucking awesomeness, I am dubious to its appeal in the Seattle market.
