OTFPOTD: Back to work edition

Since it looks like nobody else is here (or willing to post an OTFPOTD today), I'll go ahead and take care of it.

Subjects for discussion:

1) Doing more or less x-mas shopping this year?

2) How slammed are you at work after a (hopefully) four-day weekend?

3) How annoyed do you get when other people call in sick to work on a busy day?

That's all I have. I might try some tags, but probably not.

1. Less, but not because of the economy. Fewer little kids in family = less x-mas shopping.
2. Not too bad, thankfully, considering I got 4 hours of sleep last night and drove from Seattle to Portland at 6AM today.
3. Not at all. Their decisions are not my concern, and my desire to work outweighs someone else’s desire to slack so I’ll take their work no problem.

Oh, and AC/DC rules.

I had the chance to go to the concert with some friends,

but between all the $$$ I spent this weekend prior to then, and the fact that I was plain worn out, I had to pass.

I got a copy of it yesterday and I listened to it on the drive home this morning

it’s pretty good. They played 5 songs off it last night, and while they were fine, they were unremarkable live, especially compared to some of the older Bon Scott-era stuff.

When I saw them back in 1990,

they were awesome live. Sounds like they’ve either gotten old, or they had an off night.

Not at all

They were completely awesome – all I meant was that the new songs didn’t leave much of an impression compared to the older stuff. The show itself was amazing – Angus Young has some ridiculous fountain of energy somewhere that I want a piece of, and Brian Johnson hasn’t changed a bit, with the exception of adding a few pounds.

I get it.

I haven’t heard enough of the new album to know how I feel about it. The new GNR though, that can go straight in the trash bin.

I'm not sure I'll listen to Black Ice in a year

but it was a decent-to-fun listen on the way home this morning. I have yet to find a song on the new GnR record that I’ll listen to in three days, much less a year from now.

My answers:

1) Less, but not the economy either. I just don’t want the hassle this year of hunting for some “meaningful” little gift for every single person I know.
2) Slammed. I’m in the rental property industry, 1st day of the month, assistant out, four day weekend, etc.
3) It annoys me when it is my assistant and it seems to be an ongoing problem, especially during busy times.

Man do I love midgets.

you, my friend are quite a good teammate. Unlike the rest of those fuckers we played with…

by seattlebruin on Dec 2, 2008 9:46 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No shit

I was getting pissed. I counted quite a few deaths last night where the Killcam showed the guy that killed me walking right by a couple teammates who seemed to be running around in circles or something. Assholes…

by tootthekazoo on Dec 2, 2008 9:48 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My favorites were the ones where I was aware of this as it was occurring, and never bothered to shoot at the guy because I figured "hey there's no way my teammate can miss this one..."

dear God I was wrong.

Best game was the one where we staked our teammates 32 kills and they still almost lost. Well that and how tanks are bullshit.

by seattlebruin on Dec 2, 2008 9:50 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That was the part I left out

I constantly play that way. As you saw, I usually rack up a ton of kills and a ton of deaths but it’s because I rely on those around to catch what I miss. That wasn’t always the case last night. That one game where you and I counted for 47 kills and we barely pulled it out was sickening

Probably less xmas shopping this year

Many of the friends I’d shop for have graduated (as I have) and moved out of Salem. I’ve got to do something family-wise, but I’m not too concerned about that.

This week at school is the week from hell. I have two presentations to give and finals to get ready for.

I’m a little bit pissed with a coworker right now who didn’t so much call in sick as say “I don’t want to wake up at 9 and be prepared for a meeting because I work late.” Well, I work too, and I take care of my shit. I came back from my break to work on this shit; did I have to do that? Respect my effort.

.

1) About the same. We have only bought for the kids, except for gifts for both my parents and my wife’s parents, as well as our brothers, for most of the time we’ve been married. My wife & I don’t usually buy for each other on Christmas, but we go pretty far out on birthdays and Mother’s/Father’s Day. For example — on our 10th anniversary this year, well, we sorta bought each other the house (we listed our old house a few days before our anniversary)…

2) Yaaaawwwwn. I have spent most of the morning trying to figure out which brainless static HTML page I was working on.

3) Depends on what else I have to do that day. Normally people interrupt what I’m doing, and if I’m busy with a project deadline, I like to be left alone. So if people around me call in sick, I’m fine with it. Unless, of course, they have that final piece that I need. Then I get furious!

by PositivePaul on Dec 1, 2008 11:25 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hmm..

1) I’ve got 5 kids, and I am one of 7 so Christmas can be expensive.

2) It wasn’t a long weekend here (NZ) so no complaints. Also, I work in an office, and I still can’t call sitting at a computer all day ‘work’.

3) I don’t really care when someone calls in sick

Also, to go off topic in the OT post…should I get a Mac or a Windows machine for home use? Are there actually any major pros and/or cons to either machine, or is it just personal preference? I appreciate any advice.

Mac.

They don’t bloat like PCs do. Plus they just work and don’t get in the way. If you really can’t decide, well, still get a Mac. Because the new ones can run Windows on them easily, too. And, according to some reports — Windows Vista runs better on a Mac.

I feel like I should say PC just because the Mac people never fail to chime in on something like this

I’m about to get a new PC, and they’ve never really bothered me. I’m very used to them, and they cost a ton less.
Paul edits lots of photos, and if that’s your cup of tea, then listen to the man. If you wanna poke around the internet or something, then get something cheap.
My wife’s got an EEEpc, and it’s awesome (except it’s a bit small for my big hands).

I understand this...

For tinkerers, PCs are waaaaay superior.

For non-tinkerers, Macs are better.

I got tired of HAVING to tinker, so I switched.

This signature space for rent.

by PositivePaul on Dec 1, 2008 1:26 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe so, but

I keep thinking the DEGREE to which you have to tinker is overblown by mac partisans.
I think some really, truly terrible users who basically do this… yes, they’d benefit from a lot more tinkering.

But using AVG instead of McAfee, not being stupid about downloading random stuff, etc… that’s like 95% of it.
I’m totally biased; I grew up on DOS, so I used to love tinkering. I don’t love it anymore, but hey, I don’t really need to. (Sometimes you need to; it’s true. But oddly, I’ve had to do so just as much on the EEEpc – which I love).

by marc w on Dec 1, 2008 1:35 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's it, too

Operator error is the largest problem with PC’s any more. Blindly downloading things, and clicking “yes” or “ok” or “next” immediately when something shows up on the screen. Viruses and spyware because the user does not even know how to prevent those things from happening.

HA HA HA, your Grandpa's an ASS!- Tourette's Guy (R.I.P)

by tootthekazoo on Dec 1, 2008 1:39 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I just made the switch

and I have to say that I did waaaaaaaay more tinkering with my PC than I’ve done with my mac. And I’m by no means a “power user” – but it seemed like every six months or so I’d have to update drivers, clean out registry entries, and do all these stupid diagnostic things that the Mac either does automatically or doesn’t need to do.

by Sec 108 on Dec 1, 2008 12:34 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly

I would probably have never gotten a Mac because I never had reason to. But, since I was able to get this one I was finally able to see what all the fuss was about. I prefer windows, but really it’s only because I’m so used to it. They both get the job dones just fine

Mac is easier to get up and running and requires less "under the hood" work over its lifespan

so if that’s a concern, if you don’t like a lot of initial setup/config/tweaking, then Mac is the way to go.

Uhhh

I don’t know if the primary consumer market for that music would even be allowed to play the game.

by Fin on Dec 1, 2008 12:41 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Lol

Well, maybe I should’ve explained that first. First off, whoever must listen to that music must be under the age of 10. So yea, you do have the occasional 10 year old who plays through the fire and flames on youtube, but most likely, kids that play guitar hero would have, or at least pretend, that they have mature music tastes. Not only that, but they have to ask their parents for money and etc. put into their accounts to download the song. And then they will potentially have to sacrifice downloading whatever else for the kiddy music. Ok, in general, it might sell, but I don’t know if they could make a profit considering the amount of work that goes into producing the RB songs.

Ok, maybe I am just annoyed how they are starting to market the guitar hero concept to little kids, like selling pink ally and aj guitars or having hannah montana knock offs to GH and RB.

by Fin on Dec 1, 2008 12:48 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Naked Brothers' Banana Smoothie is, inexplicably, one of my favorite singles of the year

and I’m well more than 10. I think your second assumption is closer to the truth – the marketing’s getting younger, so that they can get kids hooked on GH or Rock Band earlier.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Dec 1, 2008 12:51 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yea, it makes sense from a business standpoint.

Its just annoying. I find it funny though whenever I am in GameStop and you see the kids playing the demo guitar hero on expert, even though they have it at home. I swear they need to make an arcade guitar hero, if they haven’t already. It would make such a killing.

Hope everyone had a nice holiday. Mine blew pretty hard.

1. Less. The economy plays a small role, but there are other reasons. My girlfriend’s taking family leave to care for her terminally ill mother, so our cash flow will take a hit for the next month or so. Plus we kinda already bought a bunch of stuff we wanted this year, so we’re at a loss for gift ideas. And we’re moving this month. And there’s no reason to spend money just to spend it. So it’ll be a light Christmas as we pay down some debt and put money away for a vacation or two.

2. Not at all, really. I busted my ass last week so I could take Thursday and Friday off. So the workload is back to normal.

3. It used to be annoying when I was part of a team, but nowadays what I do really isn’t dependent on other people pulling their weight. I sit in a corner by myself and do my thing.

1: About the same? Maybe less? I don’t know.

2: So busy. Worked a lot of the weekend, will be working future weekends…. totally not holiday related. Just slammed.

3: I hate it. In collaborative teams, it just kills you. Sure, you can get around it, and in an office you can rely on a bunch of other people. But it still sucks because in general you/others can’t replicate what the other person does as quickly/efficiently, so you end up spending a lot more time to get the same result. This is the beauty (and danger) of the division of labor.

that's what I mean though

99.99999% of people that buy SUV’s never use it in an off-road capacity; therefore, no matter how manly it is, it’s a grocery/IKEA/Home Depot hauler. Nothing wrong with that, I just think ruling an AWD vehicle out because it’s a “grocery hauler” is a bit harsh.

I do use my car in rough situations not every weekend.

I just don’t want it to be a 4WD mini van.

I'm starting to narrow down my options for my 2009/2010 car buying

criterion – coupe, fast, (most likely will be manual)

Here’s what I’m down to, in no particular order
Genesis
Altima
G37s
IS Coupe
Lotus Evora (mmm… maybe?)

by seattlebruin on Dec 1, 2008 1:14 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My thoughts on those, if I may

Genesis- Incredible bang for your buck, and the V6 will be available with a M/T and performance pkg that will match G37s

Altima- Good looking car, but you’re close enough in pricing to the G37s that I’d pay the little extra and get the better car

G37s- Gorgeous car, and definitely worth the money. Genesis will compare very, very closely but for much less money

IS Coupe- Luxurious ride, but Lexus has always been known to be more luxury and less performance. Will feel “soft”

Evora- Beautiful, but will be very hard to come across and dealer markup will likely take you out of the market. Plus, they titled the main press release “The vital accessory for the modern woman is the new, seductive sportscar from Lotus.”

On all the non Hyundai and Nissan models, expect to have a hard time negotiating the price down any, if at all. You will have to pay a premium to drive premium, unfortunately

by tootthekazoo on Dec 1, 2008 1:27 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think I can do OK on the G37

the coupe will be ridiculous since it’s going to be a first year model. That’s a great tagline on the Evora… is it wrong that I still really want it?

I love the G37… if I can get the Altima around what I was being quoted this year (23k with the CVT and V6), I’d probably pull the trigger on that next year. Otherwise, I think I’m most likely looking at the Genesis or the IS, since the G37 is kind of cliche, even though I love that car.

by seattlebruin on Dec 1, 2008 1:31 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don't get me wrong

Anything you choose will do you well. In the case of the Altima, I have trouble getting a “sports coupe” that isn’t even Rear Wheel Drive. I would also recommend heavily against a CVT simply because on a sports car it will greatly dilute the experience, in my opinion.
The G37 sends a chill up my spine whenever I hear it fired up. Nissan/Infiniti know what they’re doing with motors, for sure.
From what I understand, the Evora is the new “it” car for Hollywood, and has already been pre-ordered by many local celebrities, which will drive up its local demand, I would think

by tootthekazoo on Dec 1, 2008 1:36 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's so sexy though!

and I agree totally on the Altima. The two biggest reasons I didn’t pull the trigger this year (besides the whole $$$ thing) was I was concerned about the car being FWD and I want some time to learn manual before I buy the car. The CVT really isn’t bad though – it’s really, really smooth. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

by seattlebruin on Dec 1, 2008 1:37 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's my issue with CVT's

They are too smooth, and there is no shifting feel. That is one of the biggest parts of the “experience” of driving a sports car, is the throw into your seat from the shifting.
Just look at it this way: Nissan is the only company to really use CVT on anything, and it isn’t available on any of their performance cars (at least last I checked). The only other times I’ve seen a CVT on something is on Hybrid vehicles, because of the efficiency they provide in that application

Shoot.

1) Probably less if I can help it. I have no income at the moment.
2) I actually bailed on going to classes today, but in my defense, my plane was delayed three hours leaving SeaTac and New Jersey Transit doesn’t run from 1:45 am to 4:45 am and by the time I got back to my apartment it was six in the morning. But I’m not behind… that much.
3) I did it this time, but I used to work with some people who would do that about once a week. This was a job where you could get away with such things. Fortunately, they outgrew it, and then both got promoted over me, because life is fair and just.

My answers before my lunch break ends.

1) Probably the same amount of shopping this year.

2) I am slammed, but I worked Friday so it isn’t too overwhelming.

3) Mostly I prefer sick people to keep their germs at home. What pisses me off is when I take time off and no one bothers to cover my desk for me when I was gone. Usually takes at least a day and a half to uncover my desk after a week vacation.

by Sec 108 on Dec 1, 2008 12:38 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My input

1. I will likely shop a little less. I will only be buying for my Mom, my Dad, my fiancee, and my son. The kid will get the most stuff, but I’m tired of buying for everybody I know. My fiancee works 10 hours a week on Oregon minimum wage, so she will not be able to buy me a damn thing, so we already agreed on a $20 limit.
2. Not slammed at all, but that’s the way things are in my line of work. Nothing piles up when I’m not here, and I worked Fri/Sat/Sun so I didn’t miss anything
3. Doesn’t bother me at all, because I don’t have to rely on anybody to supplement my work. However, I can see where the annoyance could be. As a fun bit of coincidence, I am horribly sick and still here at work. I hate being a slave to my paycheck…

by tootthekazoo on Dec 1, 2008 1:06 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yup..

1) Doing more or less x-mas shopping this year?

Depends. Most likely less, I spent way too much last year, thanks to a check from an insurance for an accident that wasn’t my fault.

2) How slammed are you at work after a (hopefully) four-day weekend?

Well, considering I am working a part time job, I don’t think I will be too slammed, unless we get busy during the holiday.

3) How annoyed do you get when other people call in sick to work on a busy day?

Happened before, when I was working in the kitchen and this one guy had a knack for calling in on Fridays with a new excuse every time. It screwed the rest of us over very much, considering people who had Friday night off wouldn’t want to come in to work.

So in the trailer for Clint Eastwood's new movie

Clint plays a crochety old man/himself. And there’s a scene where a gang or something is threatening one of his neighbors, and Clint comes out on his porch with a shotgun, points it at the gang and growls “Get off my lawn.”

I was in a movie theater when I saw this. I was laughing my ass off. Nobody else laughed at all, and it was a mostly full theater. It was great.

You know what else was fun this weekend?

Going to the George & Dragon fully expecting Arsenal to get their, uh, arses handed to them by a far stronger Chelsea side. Having to listen to an annoying frat boy at the end of my table shout “WHERE ARE THE ARSENAL FANS NOW? IT’S REALLY QUIET IN HERE” repeatedly at no one in particular for about 5 minutes when Chelsea went 1-0 up.

Then laughing really, really hard at that same guy when Arsenal leveled.

Then, when the whistle blew at 2-1 Arsenal, looking this douche straight in the eye, raising my glass to him, and shouting “IT’S REALLY QUIET OVER THERE” at him and knowing that he had no response.

(Yes, I’m fully aware the first Arsenal goal was at least a yard offsides. No, I do not care.)

look good one week, look like crap the next. So next week will be interesting, because Arsenal kinda looked like crap for most of Sunday (at least the first half) but managed to win. Momentum’s too much to ask for, though, so I fully expect Wigan to steal three points next weekend.

I've dealt with this for years. Here's my advice (for what it's worth):

Play up the fact that you are adults now. If traveling, find a neutral location (hotel, etc.) in which to stay. If you’re not staying with one side of the family, no one has the right to feel left out.

YOU CALL THE SHOTS. Allot times that can work for everyone. Example: "We’re at Dad’s from morning until 1PM. Then we go to Mom’s and hang out. Then place X. All parties should be able to understand that while you’re trying to please everyone, it isn’t fair to YOU to be pulled in all directions. You deserve to enjoy the holiday as well.

Screw you, Mariners. I'm back in football's loving arms. *edit: well, shit. This isn't going well.

by kevin_ess on Dec 1, 2008 1:47 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We've done this, but inevitably the parents will push and pull.

We’ll stay for dinner with a family and, oops, dinner is taking longer than expected. Or, you can’t leave, you have to stay for dessert.

by Phildopip on Dec 1, 2008 1:55 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But again, that's up to you

“Can’t leave” means “Please stay”. If you’re firm about the times of your other family commitments, there are no surprises – they may not like it, but you’ve got lots of ground to cover. Kevin’s right, you have the right to enjoy your holiday too.

The annoying thing about seeing the Supersuckers is that I know almost all their songs, so I couldn’t help but drunkenly shout along for most of the show; then at AC/DC we just ended up randomly shouting WOOOOOOOO in response to…well, to I don’t know, really.

At all these big arena rock shows, people that never go to shows see a roadie on the stage and go WOOOOOOOO so we all started doing it to those people, so they could feel like rock stars. Or something. And now my voice is thrashed. But it was well worth it.

They just put the fiber optic line across the street last month. It’s really fast right? I don’t even play internet games. Or download movies. Basically check my email and read up on LL. Geez, all that wasted bandwidth… kind of a shame. Fios sounds really fast. Really really really fast.

If all you do is email and LL it may not be worth the money

but if you ever download anything from Amazon, eMusic, or other music-acquisition sources, or ever want to send big files back and forth, it’s worth it.

But you have a fiber-optic network!

A network! Of More light! So they claim!

Every time I start my streaming Netflix, it determines my video quality,

gets about 2 minutes into the movie, freezes, has to “reasses” my video quality, then comes back on looking worse than before.

Fuck Comcast.

by Phildopip on Dec 1, 2008 2:22 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ah those speed bursts.

When Comcast tells you you can get download speeds up to 12 megs, they mean you can get occasional download speeds up to 12 megs in ten second bursts.

That's my problem

Glad (not really) to know that I’m not the only one. It’s the goddamn powerboost thing. It super speeds the initial download, which tricks the system. Same reason that when I do a speedtest while at home it says I get like 15 Mb down, which is complete shit

I don't have any major issues with Comcast really

but I likes me a fast, fast internet and FiOS sounds a lot faster.

I just didn't want cable anymore.

Putting all those postseason baseball games on the extended cable package really pissed me off. I try to vote with my money whenever possible, so fuck comcast right in the ass.

U-verse? Is that a different company from comcast or verizon?

Or the name of an option package? Never heard of that.

And I'm pretty sure that they don't even want anybody to know they have multiple levels of speed

Because there is ZERO info for it on their website. They don’t even tell you the connection speed you are signing up for, just that it’s faster than DSL

For real, it's terrible

I currently want to upgrade my net speed, and drop much of my cable since I hardly use it. Short of calling and having them talk me through stuff (and I don’t trust any of them to properly explain the packages) there is no other way to do it

Prepare for a big fight with them when you try to downgrade your cable

“Fight” may be a strong word, but they will spend a good 5 minutes trying to convince you that you NEED 14 Fox Sports channels, and 32 Filipino movie channels, or whatever the fuck.

That's why I want to do it online instead

I dread calling them. Of course, if I can skate a sick deal on my current package, I’ll keep it. I do love having the HD DVR and the HD channels, but that’s all I watch. That’s why I’m planning to downgrade, because the only way to get any HD programming is to climb the packaging ladder, which sucks. I wish cable pricing was a la carte

I think the Comcast powerboost bull shit causes Netflix to think my connection is better than it is at times

After starting a movie, it will randomly pull out and say that my connection has changed, and that it will need to adjust playback quality. Done that to me about 3 times now

It's obscenely fast.

I ordered it up over the phone, then found out they had a better deal for the same package online.

Kind of pissed me off. I got the deal, but only after threatening to cancel the order. I hate that kind of shit. The deal’s out there, just give me the damn deal.

Does Fios require a contract?

I heard that it does, and that’s it’s only disadvantage when compared to Comcast

Um, yes and no. The usual kind of bait.

Get the wireless router for FREE if you sign up for a year. They offer month to month also, but you don’t get a lot, if anything. We’re going internet only, so I have no idea what comes with the cable and voice packages. Probably DVR’s and huge voicemail storage or something. Hookers, coke. The usual.

I don't normally fall for the free stuff for paying money thing

But I could use some more hookers and coke. Not that it matters, since they’ll never reach all the way to my little corner of Unincorporated King County
