OTFPOTD: 11/7/2008 I Hate Leaf Blowers Edition
You know what else really grinds my gears? The Office turning into a soap opera. The first season was okay. It borrowed too heavily from the British Office, but there were good jokes in there. The second and third seasons were FANTASTIC. But ever since the start of the fourth season, things have been off. I don't know if the development of the Office spinoff show has anything to do with the decline in writing, but it's not nearly as enjoyable as before. Frankly, I'm almost to the point of giving up on the show.
Here's your nostalgic video of the day:

This is where tags become important
in a virtual tie, it should be the best set of tags that win out. Or maybe it should be a fight to the death between the posters. Either way.

Hell, anybody’d probably kick my ass. I got in one fight in the fifth grade. During the “fight” I didn’t do anything except get punched in the ear, and that was that.

That was one of the most impressive basketball shots I've ever seen.
I mean, seriously, I can’t think of a baseball equivalent to that. Maybe throwing it from the wall to home plate on the fly. Withouth even discussing the precision needed on that shot, the sheer amount of strength needed to get that shot to the rim impresses the shit out of me.
I watched that shot 20 times over and over just watching his release. Unbelievable.

I don't know about the arrow (SBN does weird crap sometimes)
but look at the date of the movie – 1984. Or, also known as When Michael Keaton And Joe Piscopo Were Still Funny. Like I said, it’s by no means a classic, but it’s good for a few laughs. Especially for those that like puns.

You guys just made the comment and my response to people that tell me baseball is boring.
I mean, every pitch is exciting to me. Each at bat is it’s own little moment, and every one is different. I actually feel the tension building in my stomach as the pitcher toes the rubber and takes the signals from the catcher. Man on first? Fuels the drama. Even when they start playing head games, like a (smart) batter stepping out on Jamie Moyer, or Moyer getting the hitters timing until he knows just how long he can hold his pitch until the batter requests time from the ump.
The only way I feel this about basketball is when I watch a game with a couple of friends that get excited about those moments. I think I need to give basketball another try, it’s been a long time since I’ve sat through a game.

Baseball is almost antithetical to basketball.
Both are team sports, but baseball is much more individual oriented than basketball. One emphasizes what you are talking about, using time to think and come up with strategies. The other is much more about thinking in the heat of the moment and reacting to different strategies employed by the opposing team (those are two separate things, btw). In baseball the manager doesn’t matter, in basketball the coach makes a considerable difference.
In basketball there are those little mindgames you see in baseball too. You just have to know where to look. Most people never do this, but if you focus on an individual matchup instead of just following the ball wherever it goes, you’ll see a whole new world.

I found it quite like when I was younger and my dad would tell me just watch an individual fielder at a baseball game
just to get an idea of the little things that happen inside the game that no one really pays attention to… but that add so much flavor to the game

Oh yeah.
I like to watch great defenders matchup with great scorers. Not so much anymore, but I loved watching Kobe and Bruce Bowen go at it. Now Kobe is getting old and is gonna start fading.
I love this discussion, but I have to go to morning shootaround. Got a game today, and hopefully I get cleared to play!

Great approach! There's a lot of nuances to a baseball game.
I’m a firm believer that it’s a bit more complicated than a lot of people give credit. I do this a lot when watching a football game as well. The weird thing is, I’m completely incapable of doing this during a basketball game. My eyes just follow the ball and I’ve never been able to lock onto a player.

That's my problem with basketball I think, my brain doesn't recognize the patterns.
The defenses and offenses just look like chaos to me, I can never spot the triangles or the boxes or whatever the hell you call them. About the only thing I’ve been able to appreciate up to this point is the occasional screen I see develop a half second before it happens.
What’s weird is in a football game I can see the plays laid out, no problem. The routes, the offensive/defensive movements, even the direction the linemen are moving. Like it’s all on a board. I’ve never really thought about what the difference is, but now that I’m thinking about it, kind of strange.

Basketball and football aren't very similar
In football you get 45 seconds (NFL I believe, 30 for college…maybe?) to choose your play and then everybody sets up. The five down lineman always go the same spot, the QB almost always goes to the same spot, there is only so much variation that you can do. In basketball, you don’t have time to decide what the defense is thinking and choose a play that will surprise them. You go through that thought process definitely, only it takes about three seconds max and in football it takes maybe 10 or 15. Some teams don’t even run plays so different guys are in different spots every time. And since it’s a free flowing game, a lot of points come in transition when there are no set plays.

are similar in that they both require a great deal of teamwork to be successful. But I think basketball is much more like hockey than it is like football.

I watched your video links to Roy, reminds me of Jordan.
There is the one player I used to watch continuously. He and Pippen together. Your clips reminded me of the fade away shots Jorden used to make. Even that last buzzer beater, from the far side of the court. Crazy how much that reminds me of a couple classic Jordan moments.

Jordan you say? This one was Jordanesque
http://blazersclips.blogspot.com/2007/12/20071219-brandon-roys-switching-hand.html
He did this in a game were he was battling the flu and spent a good amount of the third quarter throwing up in the locker room.

Basketball and football are the same way to me
when I was little, I only really loved baseball because that’s what I understood, and as I watched more football and hoops I started to understand the games a lot better and love them way more.
A lot of folks who don’t follow the NBA that closely will say that they don’t like the league because they have no fundamentals and it’s just a bunch of sloppy one on one play – while certainly this is true for a few teams, it’s just as true in baseball where you have teams like the M’s (sad face) that don’t do anything right either. Almost every NBA game is a clinic in the skill of the teams, both in running plays out of a set/flex offense and (especially) in playing man to man defense. Even when guys go one on one, it takes the other four guys clearing out to set it up, and even then, I still marvel at the skills of the individual players.
In short, I love basketball almost as much as I love baseball.

People who think NBA players are short on fundamentals
don’t understand what they’re talking about.
If you were ever in a gym, alone, with a NBA player your mind would be blown by what they can do on the court.

I have been; it's incredible
one of the things we used to do every summer was to sneak into the Men’s Gym at UCLA in between summer classes and stuff – every year it attracts top-flight NBAers to go play in the pickup games, and if you know your way around UCLA, it’s not hard to find a way in. We’ve caught Paul Pierce, Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Yao, T-mac, Baron Davis, and pretty much every current NBAer who went to UCLA.

Their athleticism is out of this world.
And their skills are unreal too. I mean, Gilbert Arenas made 74 out of 100 NBA three’s to beat Deshawn Stevenson in a shooting contest. Except Gilbert shot those threes with only one hand.

I like my games short and exciting.
So, for me, playing RPGs can get tedious. I’m enjoying Fallout a lot, but I’m sure I’ll get bored or angry over the difficulty and quit at some point. I can’t remember the last RPG I played all the way through.
It just seems like there’s been such a flood of good games coming out over the past couple of years that I don’t want to dedicate 40 hours to any single one.
So Gears is perfect for me.

Pretty good, actually.
Their closest distribution center is in LA I think so the turnaround is pretty slow. I have the two at a time deal (~$25/month), so I’m generally playing one game while the other is in transit. Their selection is good, though when a new title comes out it takes awhile for the demand to slow. I’ve yet to get a top-release title right away.

It's quite awesome.
I live in San Diego, so the fact that they distribute from L.A. is great for me. I buy a lot of games from them, too, since I’ve been with them long enough to get a 10% discount on everything I buy. And the shipping’s free for the case and booklet when you buy something.
Plus, you can rent a game the day it comes out, then click “Keep It” and buy it for like $45. It’s “used,” but you’re obviously the only one who has played it. You just have to be willing to wait a couple days. Sometimes I’m not.
