Stupid Question

I have looked at Lookout Landing over the past one and a half seasons but have never had the courage to post. Five beers in tonight and I'm finding.

However, the question hasn't to do so much with the Mariners as it does with the Diamondbacks and a certain Brandon Webb and Dan Haren. With all of the new fangled stats that I frankly still have problems wrapping my brain around (tRA, babib, other stuff) though someday hope to understand, are they as awesome as their ERA, K, WHIP and other easy stats seem to indicate? I am sorry if this is stupidly off topic, but damn. You guys know stuff. That I do not.

In a word, yes.

Webb’s tRA* in ‘08 was 3.36. Haren’s was 3.79.

For comparison, Johan Santana’s tRA* in ‘04 was 3.25. In ’05 it was 3.23. Tim Lincecum’s tRA* this year was 3.69. Cliff Lee’s was 3.81.

Dan Haren is really good. Webb is an elite pitcher. If anything, Webb is underrated by traditional metrics.

(If I am misinterpreting/misspeaking, I apologize.)

No, this is awesome.

So hopefully to increase my understanding (though it may have been done before) what makes Webb’s tRA better than Lincecum’s? Is it basically the value of the ground out in it’s run value prevention factor thing? And Webb’s ability to strike people out? (I am referring I think to the tRA explained, no numbers attached post. Again. I am sorry for asking something you guys have answered a thousand times.

Lincecum's tRA was actually better than Webb's last season (2.86 vs. 3.04)

tRA* regresses each of their component stats towards league average, and the nature of Webb’s strengths is that they have a stronger correlation year to year than Lincecum’s. Essentially tRA* is saying Webb’s season was less lucky than Timmy’s.

It is.

From the “It’s Insane This Guy’s Taint” sketch. Is that a Mr. Show thing, intro, credits whatever caricature? I recognize it but at the same time don’t. Regardless, it is awesome.

It's the Mr. Show logo.

“It’s Insane, This Guy’s Taint” is a classic. Taint Misbehavin’.

I love this thread.

Screw you, Mariners. I'm back in football's loving arms. *edit: well, shit. This isn't going well.
