Matt Holliday is an Athletic?
More as it comes in, but the return to Colorado isn't yet known. Official word is now Greg Smith, Huston Street and Carlos Gonzalez.
Matt Holliday is due $13.5 million next year in his last season before free agnecy. He will net Type A status though, so keep that in mind when we know what Oakland gave up. Still, this seems like an odd move for a team that just spent a year dumping everyone with value for prospects.

Like what the Cardinals were rumored to be offering for Holliday?
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
They're just going to flip him for Sherril,
who they’ll flip for Lillibridge + 3 other B level prospects.

Is Beane going to turn around trade him?
a’la the 90’s Piazza trade from LA to Florida to the Mets?
This is an interesting idea
He might have a deal worked out with another team who has a prospect he really likes a lot, and They wanted Holliday. I wouldn’t put it past Beane.

Doesn't seem like a terrible idea.
Get a great player for one year, get the draft picks after this year. And maybe he’ll give them a shot to win this year. Seems like a no-loss situation for Beane
Yesterday's Pants
A blog-thingy about the Mariners and stuff.
There's a very obvious loss
in that the A’s might not be anywhere near contention level and the prospects he has to give up are of much more value than 2 draft picks.
He goes from hitters' paradise, to pitchers' paradise.

And hitting in front of Helton to hitting in front of Cust...
Oh wait, that’s about the same thing.

Isn't that Oakland?
Probably as soon as he passes his physical…

Matt Holliday-OF- Rockies Nov. 10 – 2:59 pm et
ESPN.com reports that the Matt Holliday-to-Oakland deal, which is still pending physicals, includes left-hander Greg Smith.
It makes sense that either Smith or Sean Gallagher was going to be involved. The Rockies want major league-ready talent, and the A’s probably preferred going that route than touching their top prospects anyway. No word yet on whether Huston Street is in the mix. According to ESPN.com, there are final details still to be worked out, but the trade has been agreed to.

Except here's what ESPN.com actually reports
Although the package coming back to Colorado has yet to be determined, it’s believed that pitcher Greg Smith was one of the players under discussion.
greg smith will get hit hard in coors
if he’s the centerpiece + some expendable OF…they didnt give up much
heck they wanted 2 guys pushing 30 and a middle reliever from cards
Look out Anaheim!
Hehehehehehe
Like mentioned above, I think Holliday may the centerpiece in another trade Beane has concocted. And it might be with another NL West team that Colorado would have rejected. And didn’t Beane do something similar last offseason? Arizona traded with the White Sox and then Beane traded with Arizona and got the White Sox prospect. Chris Carter and Aaron Cunningham were previously in Chicago, went to Arizona, and landed in Oakland in the Haren deal.
My speculation: Beane flips Holiiday for Matt Kemp, Andre Etheir, or James Loney (maybe even 2 of the 3). If Beane tried working out a 3-way trade, Colorado probably wouldn’t accept a Holliday -—> LA deal.
I would cry and kill Ned Coletti
if he made that trade.
Unless it was something like Ethier and a prospect for Holliday, I could live with that given Ethier’s age and ceiling.
You know what? Fuck you Sports Gods, fuck you.
I hope it doesn't happen
The A’s are not acquiring him with the intention of flipping him or even trading him in July. The team is in position to increase its payroll to as much as $80 million,
I hope it doesn't happen, but there's no way the A's are getting Holliday and calling it good.
SS is their most obvious need.

No, SS is more obvious than 3B
The A’s have a sunk cost Eric Chavez at third base. Even if he’s only a 50% chance of a league average player, that’s better than Crosby, who is a 0% chance of a league average player.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
I don't care.
Since the M’s are out of contention this year, I wouldn’t be too bothered if the Angel’s signed CC, and Pujol landed in Oakland.
[erm to one year contracts though].
I was at Shea for the Felix-Slam!
Personal M's record: 5-4.

Rotoworld says HUSTON STREET!, Carlos Gonzalez and Greg Smith
That’s quite a haul

His Avg drops 10 pts and his OPS only goes down 26 pts.
Ha…not buying it.
A 10 pt drop in BA would result in a 20 pt drop in OPS (with everything else held equal). I just don’t get their logic behind this one.
One less HR….Who are we kidding? Evidence ESPN doesn’t have a fucking clue what park adjustments are.

Ha, I comletely forgot about this.
It was a pleasure.
Fantastic
We’re rebuilding in ’09 anyway. All this means is that the Athletics lose good-looking prospects + a good reliever.
Now I know how the other ALW teams felt when we sent away Tillman/Jones/Sherrill.
Absolutely
Losing them just doesn’t upset me as much as Chris, Adam, and George.
Hmmm. I think this is more like losing Feierabend, a worse version Putz and, I don't know, Mike Saunders.
No, Carlos Gonzalez isn’t terribly similar to Saunders, but still… Gonzalez should be behind Aaron Cunningham and possibly Travis Buck in A’s OF depth. He’s fine, but this isn’t at all like the Tillman/Jones/Sherrill/Butler/Mickolio situation. The closest equivalent may be what the Twins got for Johan Santana. Gonzalez is a plus defender and MAY be a good hitter, while Gomez is a meh bat and perhaps the best outfielder in existence.
To me, the Rockies’ haul is indicative of the fact that they had no leverage; it was either take a deal or let Holliday walk next year. Which makes me think the Ludwick rumors weren’t true.

I sincerely hope not.

Thinking about it, it doesn't surprise me that they traded CarGon.
He was never Beane’s type of player anyways.
Today must be "trading former DBack prospects" day.
According to FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal, the Nationals have picked up Scott Olsen and Josh Willingham from the Marlins for Emilio Bonifacio and a package of minor leaguers.
Two of the minor leaguers are right-hander P.J. Dean and infielder Jake Smolinski. Unless there’s someone much better going to Florida that we don’t know about yet, this could be a huge steal for the Nationals. We wouldn’t trade either Olsen or Willingham for that trio, much less both. If the Marlins like Bonifacio that much, it could mean that Dan Uggla is on the way out. The Nats could pencil in Willingham at first base and then move him to the outfield if Nick Johnson is healthy.
Except Bonifacio blows.
Scott Olsen
Apparently the Nats are still working on putting together a team full of the worst human beings in baseball.
The Ryan Feierabend comparisons become more and more apt.
by Graham MacAree on Nov 10, 2008 9:26 PM PST up reply actions
Going forward, I actually like Ryan more...
Feierabend had the better tRA* and is almost 2 years younger.
Neither strike out a lot, but Feierabend has decent control.
To be fair, Smith is one of those guys who may beat his peripherals; he’s got no stuff and has consistently been a pretty effective pitcher. But yeah, Greg Smith is not a prospect.
Holliday leaving after 09 will net the A's draft picks though, so vive le rebuild
In the interim, Beane gets a kinda sorta draw that can hit for one year which he can make some sort of feeble effort to build around.
