Slightly Hungover OTFPOTD for 10/4

Nobody's going to read these weekend ones anyway, so I can just freestyle.  If only I wasn't hungover, I could do such a thing.  Oh beer, why must you treat me so badly when I'm always so nice to you?

Music questions ahoy!

Husker Du's Zen Arcade:  Alternative rock masterpiece or unlistenable wall of noise?  I love Husker Du but I tend towards the latter opinion of this particular album.

David Bowie's Heroes:  Most brutal love song ever?  It sounds so inspiring, but the people in the song are so broken; they want to be so whole, it hurts.

The New Bomb Turks:  Best band you've probably never heard of?  You really need to check these guys out.

Also, I might mention how awesome it is to go to a little dive bar and hear a random, anonymous punk band do a great cover of my favorite Groovie Ghoulies song.

New Bomb Turks kick ass.

Man, I used to love the Groovie Ghoulies – I do have to say that their appeal to me wore thinner as they always kind of stayed with the same schtick.

Not a fan of Zen Arcade.

Heroes is magnificent in every way.

Screw you, Mariners. I'm back in football's loving arms.

New Bomb Turks.

Sounds like an older Rancid. The best band I never heard of was The Mountain Goats, until I heard of them. I remember it came up that there were some Mountain Goats fans on here. Anybody heard of them?

Love the Mountain Goats.

I’m not an expert on them, a buddy introduced me to the band (and Bright Eyes at the same time) a few months back. I’m thoroughly enjoying both bands.

Agree on New Bomb Turks, completely disagree on Zen Arcade.

I love Zen Arcade so much it hurts.

I'm not sure why it never hit me that much

warehouse: songs and stories is an amazing album, but for some reason zen arcade never really spoke to me.

Most people's unlistenable wall of noise is pop to me.

I’m into soundscapes and layers and the like. The production on that album fascinates me.

ah yeah see I can't drink tonight

so I had to consume twice as much alcohol last night to make up for it

I'm a third of the way through a rough weekend myself.

Partied with friends last night (cheap beer and black bullet shots), bowling league followed by beerfest tonight, then the Seahawks game tomorrow (either at home or at the pub, but drinking will be involved either way).

Sooo one of my coworkers opened an extra copy of Season 4 of House and, upon realizing his/her mistake, stuck it on the shelf with empty boxed sets.

I found it today while I was cleaning up. Since it’s been opened I can’t send it back to the distributor, and i doubt very much that it’s going to sell in the store since it’s been opened. It’s not going to make its money back as a rental copy. So, if anyone wants it, tax-free, for cost, send me an e-mail. It’s $34.11 straight up. You’d have to pick it up either today or next week sometime.

Didn't realize the Dixie Chicks covered that song

The original is great but the Supersuckers cover is pretty fantastic too.

I just got done watching the CMT top 20...

When did Darius Rucker start making country music? I thought he was a Blowfish, or the Hootie…

Waaaa. Moyer is starting for the Phils.

Thought it was supposed to be Cole Hamel, now I want to go watch the game. That means bar, which means beer. Which means I hope the wife is happy today.

she'd probably be happier if you didn't call her 'the wife'

but maybe make her dinner or something before you go?

I only call her the wife when I'm objectifying her. As in being an impediment to my ability to go catch this game.

Otherwise I call her “Honey” or “Babe”. I used her name once, she said it made her feel weird. Anyway. I’m cleaning bathrooms. Her least favorite chore, so that’s my plan. Plus litterbox, yuck.

So my annual beerfest is tonight.

Here are my contributions:

Roots Island Red
Avatar Jasmine IPA
Scullers IPA
Laughing Buddha Ginger Pale Ale

Has anyone tried any of these?

I've had the Laughing Buddha

it’s pretty good – not my favorite, but definitely good. Haven’t had the others.

In honor of the post above:

“The fiancee” wants to know if Laughing Buddha is “bitter” like a lot of IPA’s.

by Thingray on Oct 4, 2008 2:44 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yup.

Not the bitterest, but that is what IPA’s are – hoppy, bitter versions of ales. I love IPA’s, but my…er, the wife hates them precisely because of that bitterness.

I'm trying to train a friend of mine to drink beer

and the second thing I bought for her was a Russian imperial stout.

Too much. Too fast.

Ya think?

What else did you ask for on the second date (since you seemed to be shooting for the moon anyway)?

yeah, you want to ease the transition.

Go with the red family or the ales first, then hit her with the dark stuff.

Man there are so many possibgle responses to that...

If she wanted something dark, why did she go out with your pale white ass?

But then Axe is marketing Dark Temptation now. So there you go.
