OTFPOTDEIEIO 10-3 Edition

Wow, so what? There's not one of these yet?  Maybe someone's busy writing one now, and it's a race to see how quickly we can get it posted.

In case you wanted to go have the flesh-eating-fish pedicure, well, the state stepped in and said you can't.

I'm still freaking out about moving next Thursday.  But when I get in the house, should I open a Cabernet Savignon or stick with the Cuvee that I'm dying to open?  I still drink beer, but both my wife and I prefer red wine nowadays...

Where's Librocrat these days?  Busy with politics stuff, I'm sure, but I figured at some point he'd come here and mention something about the apparent suicide of Choi Jin-sil.

Finally, I love this site:

This is the first time I've ever done one of these.

When you close on your house

you should open your favorite wine. Whatever it is.

I was mere seconds away from opening an OTFPOTD of half-assery myself; thank you for saving the community from my lame attempt at diarizing. Fanposting. Whatever.

So here's a question

I was thinking about some very odd things this morning. My wife’s gone for two weeks, and she’ll be gone most of the rest of the year, which means I’m deleting all her crappy TV shows off the DVR because otherwise it’ll fill up and she’ll really never have time to catch up anyway.

But then I hit one particular show, and I couldn’t delete it because I found myself still intrigued by it. So, my question to you all is this: What is the most out of character thing about you, as far as your television/music/book/film likes and dislikes?

For instance, I tend to really dislike faux-dramatic TV shows, and TV shows that get all schmoopy with twee indie pop playing in the background, but the show that I couldn’t bring myself to take off the DVR?

Grey’s Anatomy. That’s right, I watch Grey’s Anatomy. I’m not embarrassed by it, I just sorta don’t understand it – it flies in the face of all I like and dislike about television and culture, yet strangely I keep watching it.

So what’s the one thing that you watch/read/listen to, even though you know it’s not in character for you?

Gulp.... I like 70's Barry Manilow.

That doesn’t go very far in proving I’m not square, but he was my mom’s favorite growing up, she took us to see him a bunch of times and if I hear one of his songs on the oldies station I’m all over it.

I read pdb’s post and thought I was immune to nonsense, above the fray. And no. Tom Jones. That’s all I’m saying.

I just bought a great album off his with remakes of “Mama told me not to come”, “Black Betty” and “Burnin’ down the house” on it.

And I’ll go with Barry Manilow too. Same exact story as royalcurve. I saw him for the first time when I was about 5 years old.

Lately I'm making an effort to check out entertainers as quickly as possible.

I’ve missed out big in the past with the ‘catch ’em next time’ decision. Some have died, retired due to ill health, or their performance has become less than stellar for whatever reasons.

One of my favorite bands used to tour with Hootie.

I’m not personally a Hootie fan, but the guys from Jump Little Children went to school with my wife in Charleston. I had never heard of them until I met her (they’re huge on the East Coast, but not really known much over here), but fell in love with their music fast. Recently, they shortened their name to “Jump” – a bad move in my mind. Anyway, they finally went on hiatus, and lead singer Jay Clifford just released an incredible solo album that I strongly recommend.

I enjoy reading fanatsy novels from time to time. Especially the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

Also, during my work day when I am out making sales calls all I listen to is cheesy upbeat dance music. Helps keep me in a positive mindset when I am out meeting clients and prospects.

I hate the concept behind country music, dislike the djs, and often dislike the artists. But damn, some Tim or Keith Urban or Taylor Swift while driving with the windows down…

Also my Laguna Beach obsession. Hate the characters, hate the concept, hate what it promotes, but love the show.

Oh look at that

The best airlines for customer satisfaction? Discount carriers like Southwest. As in, the airlines that never cried wolf, never added on surcharges for little things like checking bags and non-alcoholic drinks, never cancelled flights due to fuel costs, etc. Funny how United, American, Delta etc. report huge losses and risk of unsustainability without surcharges, but airlines like Southwest keep on rolling without a hitch. Just a matter of how you allocate and manage your resources, basically.

by Gomez on Oct 3, 2008 9:09 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Southwest has always done it right

Because their initial operating strategy was “do better than the big guys”. And now that they ARE one of the big guys, they’ve kept that same philosophy. For one thing, they can turn a plane around (from touchdown to ready to board the next flight) in less than 30 mins, and it can take the legacy carriers almost twice that. People notice these things. Southwest also doesn’t treat people with contempt.

My wife actually missed her flight yesterday, because she got picked for extra screening in the security line; when she went to the USAir counter and explained that she’d missed her flight due to the security line, the gate agent looked at her and said, apparently with no end of snottiness, “well, you checked in almost 90 minutes ago, I’m not sure how you managed to miss your flight”. Which is exactly what you don’t need to hear at that point. Southwest is good at teaching their people to treat passengers like humans, and not cattle; when every single airline has the same crappy legroom, food, and personal space, these things matter.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Oct 3, 2008 9:14 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

This is how they stay in business

if they “consistently provide you with horrible service”, why do you keep flying with them? Most airlines price-match within an hour or two of one of them posting a fare; in this day and age there’s no earthly reason to be loyal to an airline unless they’re the only one that flies to a city you need to go to.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Oct 3, 2008 9:32 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Surprising how often this happens (one carrier per *direct* route)

NW has been up and down; I fly them sometimes because the Seattle-Amsterdam route is one of the best ways to get to Europe. I’ve also flown w/them to Hawaii (direct Kona-Seatac flight; no one else does this for now), and been treated horribly. At some level, I don’t really mind. I don’t fly for the flight, I fly to get somewhere I want to go. Certainly it’s a less-terrible experience if you’re treated humanely, but ultimately it’s just about getting where you want to go.

I’m just suspicious of ‘great’ airline service, because I’ve seen good and bad on every carrier from Southwest to Singapore Air. I think if I flew first class it might make more of a difference, but since I don’t….

by marc w on Oct 3, 2008 9:36 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I used to be locked in to Northwest

because I flew to Minot, ND quite a bit, and they’re the only carrier that goes there; I really try to avoid flying US domestic airlines internationally whenever possible.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Oct 3, 2008 9:39 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What do you do with routes like the Sea/Amst. run that are co-operated by a US and a foreign carrier?

It’s half Northwest, half KLM.

Continental and Virgin used to do the same for certain flights to the UK (LA-London, Newark-London).

by marc w on Oct 3, 2008 9:53 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I fly BA to London

then EasyJet or Ryanair or whatever to Amsterdam. I have no problem connecting if need be – I just don’t want to be stuck on a US-crewed airliner for that long if I can avoid it.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

I will generally always fly with whoever is cheapest because, like you, I just care about getting there.

NEVER EVER FLY THROUGH NEWARK.

I've had the misfortune of taking 4 legs involved with Newark.

I’ve had one flight canceled due to weather that didn’t exist. One flight delayed for 3 hours. One flight sit on the bloody tarmac for three hours and one single flight that actually left on time (bless you Alaksa Air).

Fuck off New Jersey. I’m flying to Philly or NYC only.

by Matthew on Oct 3, 2008 10:01 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Newark seems to be the bastard stepchild of the NYC air corridor

Do you ever read Ask The Pilot, on salon.com (if you run Greasemonkey you can get a site pass for free)? He’s a commercial pilot that writes about the aviation industry – he has repeatedly said that “weather delays” are not really “weather delays” at the departing or arriving airport, but one of two things – delays in pilot paperwork completion or weather somewhere else that slows down the whole system. Which is bizarre.

It’s a pretty interesting column, well worth a read.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Oct 3, 2008 10:04 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, it was retarded. I can understand weather delays that aren't apparent.

And I’m never going to be like the dipship douchebag in the apple commercials and “dee dee dee look at me I see it’s not raining in Seattle right now durrrrrrr” act like I know everything. However, when you flat out cancel a flight and then I’m standing there looking at a Weather Channel map showing the only rain in the country is in like Maine, you had better come up with a reason beside “weather”

by Matthew on Oct 3, 2008 10:07 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My understanding is that delays are often due to airport traffic.

You can only land and takeoff so many airplanes in a day. Some of these airports are consistently over scheduling their capacity that if an airline misses their time, they have to go back to the end of the line.

I have two uncles who are pilots; one for Delta and the other for American Airlines. They say they have this problem through cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Oct 3, 2008 10:35 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There isn't, really.

Due to the number of airports in that tight area (NWK, LGA, JFK, plus numerous smaller airports and armed forces bases), there is often a wait on airtime. NWK is stuck the worst, because due to the AFB south of them, Teterboro to the west, and NYC to the east, the only approach they have exclusively for takeoffs is the NNE corridor.

You can only fit so many planes on an approach.

by Faux on Oct 3, 2008 11:37 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed -I've learned my lesson on Newark

I still don’t much care about carrier, but I really DO care about the route.

I won’t be stopping in Newark again.

I had a long layover in Newark once (surprise!), and my wife and I just thought we’d wander the town, see what was shaking. Answer: nothing. One of the most depressing places I’ve ever been – not because it was squalid or terrifying; just dead. Like everyone there would much rather be somewhere else.

by marc w on Oct 3, 2008 11:08 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's gotten better, but it's still one of those places people go to work, and then leave.

Doesn’t leave much in the way of culture. A lot of NJ is like that, all the artsy types either exist in the towns or go into NYC. It leaves the cities that don’t actively cater to the culture crowd dead at night.

by kevin_ess on Oct 3, 2008 9:36 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm glad that's never happened to me

because if so, I would end up on several no-fly lists after beating up multiple gate agents. I nearly had a shouting match with USAir when they delayed us for four+ hours because they couldn’t find a plane (at their hub!) and then when they finally did get a plane, they took 60 minutes to turn it around.

End result: I missed my connecting flight by 5 minutes.

US Air’s response: We can help you buy a new ticket. The only that saved me from going apeshit on them was that they were all actually polite and I will never verbally abuse a low rung employee that’s not treating me like a nuisance.

by Matthew on Oct 3, 2008 9:49 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The complicating factor here

is that my wife is completely, utterly, abjectly terrified to fly; it was all she could do to not collapse in a quivering heap when she got to the gate and they said she couldn’t board, because the flight she missed is the only nonstop beween PDX and Philly. She got rebooked on a flight that connected through Phoenix. So, while I probably WOULD have gone apeshit had somebody been that condescending to me, she somehow managed to stay calm, which is impressive considering her flying phobia.

I’m with you though – if they’re nice to me, I save my vitriol and focus on the solution. If they condescend like that, though, all bets are off.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Oct 3, 2008 9:53 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can relate.

I’m terrified of flying too, and any complication at the airport does just makes it worse.

by royalcurve on Oct 3, 2008 9:58 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

She's got the whole routine down.

90 min before flight: get to airport, get in line, check bag (she’s gone for two weeks and can’t carry on that much stuff)
60 min before flight: go to bar, get double G&T, take first Xanax of the day
15 min before flight: hit restroom so no need to get up during flight
5 min before boarding time: get in line. While in line for boarding, take second Xanax.

So the whole damn apple cart was upset yesterday. I’ve never been afraid to fly, so I can’t really relate, but I can definitely understand her need for order and predictability and it kills me that she was on the other side of security when all this happened.

I took a leadership course for work a few years ago...

The guy that taught the course was really an excellent presenter and has written several books on the subject of corporate leadership and how to run corporations successfully. The model he talked about most frequently? Southwest Airlines.

The biggest thing I remember from that class was that how everyone talks about the principle “The customer is always right!” and how Southwest actually didn’t think that way. Their philosophy is that the employee is always right — and that the employees need to be empowered to do things to make it right for the customer, even if it means taking a little bit of a hit with the company. If the employees are happy, they’ll make the customers happy.

Makes a lot of sense to me, really.

it’s a critical distinction but one that people don’t understand – happy employees make for happy customers.

They keep a sense of humor, too.

I love Southwest’s songs that they sing, or jokes they make about landing. I’ve had them say “Wheeeeeeeeeee” upon a rough landing, or poke fun at one another over the intercom. It helps.

The most awesome opening to a press conference ever

Newcastle United, the most shambolic club in English (and possibly world) football, unveiled their new manager yesterday – Joe Kinnear. he has a, shall we say, colorful way of speaking. This was the very first question and answer at the press conference:

JK Which one is Simon Bird [Daily Mirror’s north-east football writer]?

SB Me.

JK You’re a cunt.

SB Thank you.

They've been taken over? Everywhere?

I knew there was a big fuss after Coffee People was taken over.
Dutch Bros has the best coffee creations, in my opinion. Everywhere else makes flavored drinks way too sweet. Their actual coffee is not the best, but their espresso drinks are. And considering it started in Corvallis (I believe) yeah, it’s loyalty.

Same for CP. It’s a Portland brand, or was, and it also made excellent espresso drinks.

The financial sector has a habit for whining to get their way. And by whining when they don’t get their way, they sell the market off. When they do get their way, foreign investors pull out because our government continues to destroy the dollar.

Now I see it dropped over the last 3 hours of trading. Huh.

Citigroup did take a hit once Wells Fargo swiped Wachovia. Also, news of big job losses, over 150K nationwide, well over projections.

I think Wachovia was the last big national one

but I’d bet there will be a lot of midsized banks like, uh, that one in California with the dumb name that failed about a month ago (IndyMac I think) that collapse or get subsumed at this point.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

IndyMac failed back in July

Not sure which other banks (not investment firms) other than WaMu went down.

by Gomez on Oct 3, 2008 1:12 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Thus "collapse or get subsumed"

small-to-midsized banks that carried their own mortgages and didn’t collateralize them into packaged debt will probably be OK, but banks of that size that participated in the whole mortgage fiasco will be in trouble just like the big boys.

B of A's investment arm isn't weak

they did just buy Morgan Stanley. Their retail banking is pretty weak comparatively, though, after all these mergers/acquisitions, and they may decide it’s better to sell off their banking operations and focus on investments at this point.
