Cashman warned by Gillick about working for Lincoln
Sometimes Gillick is like a guy from a slasher movie; even if you think he's gone you know that somehow he's going to find a way to come back and get you.
So now here's Jon Heyman supporting what has been suggested elsewhere; viz., that Cashman never gave any serious consideration to the Mariners job. And it's because of difficulties Gillick had working for Lincoln:
Cashman was warned about Mariners honcho
Brian Cashman is still a Yankee in part because of Gillick's stories about working for the current Mariners regime. Gillick told Cashman for years what it was like to answer to Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln, and Cashman is said to have never seriously considered going there in part because of those stories.
So if Lincoln couldn't keep from meddling when someone with Gillick's pedigree was GM, does the Z-man stand a chance??

So Lincoln is more of a pain than NYY ownership....

Yeah that was my first thought.
If meddling ownership bothered you, is picking NYY the best choice?

"Sometimes Gillick is like a guy from a slasher movie"
I’m thinking Lincoln is the villain here, not Gillick.

After Churchill's quote about Gillick in his thread
I’m inclined to say “bullshit”. No quotes, no sources in that article.

The two tidbits of info are by no means contradictory...
And Cashman and Zoinks are likely very different people…

Why wouldn't it?
If Gillick’s got such a hardon against Lincoln, why would he call and recommend Zduriencik (or anybody for that matter) if he is going to go about warning another GM about Lincoln?
That doesn’t sound weirdly inconsistent to you?
“Hey Cash, don’t take this job, it sucks.”
“Oh hey Howard, take Zduriencik, he’s cool.”
I have no doubts that Gillick hated working for Lincoln and probably complained about it. I just don’t see Gillick going out of his way to put the fear-bomb on prospective new hires for the club. Besides, wouldn’t that be some form of meddling and / or illegal?

On the other hand...
….I can see Gillick being absolutely honest about how a typical season with Lincoln would be. And let Cashman draw his own conclusions.

Exactly.
This and the fact that Zduriencik and Cashman are likely completely different personalities. Perhaps Gillick knew that Cashman couldn’t work with Howard whereas Zduriencik wouldn’t be fazed by him. Perhaps Gillick and Cashman have become BFFs and it’s Gillick’s turn in a game of one-upsmanship pranks on Zoinks.
//okay, so that last one’s a stretch and probably isn’t true…

Now Zoidberg's the popular one!

Cashman and Z are in different situations
There are only 30 possible MLB GM jobs in the world. Opportunities to snag one are rare and involve a lot of competition. Cashman can sit back and say “Better the devil I know or the devil I don’t?” because he already has one of those jobs. If you’re Z you could spend the rest of your life waiting for another opportunitiy.

Are they back in it if they win vs. Philly and get Hass back?

In theory
They’re still a long way from playing like a playoff contender, however. That defense needs to stop people more often.

Could you imagine Cashman holding a Mariner GM job?
His first order of business would be to make Jarrod Washburn his Assistant GM.
