OFFTOP 10.27.08 Where is Everyone edition

My Monday is a bit hectic, also, but I need a place to stop in from time to time and wake myself up a little.  Yes, I'm substituting LL for caffeine.  I need a crutch.

And hey, I might not know anything about american football, but whoa big premier league weekend.

With eight days til d-day, there's really no links that do not encourage the discussion of politics.  So let's keep things light and fluffy, shall we?

My personal favorite is the one that they used to have on the 5 in Chula Vista (south SD)

which was a warning to watch for people crossing the highway. Yes, the stick figure picture showed the guy wearing a sombrero.

by seattlebruin on Oct 27, 2008 9:04 AM PDT up reply actions

I can't find a picture of it now

but one of my favorites is the warning sign that’s posted in several locations around Portland, to warn bicyclists of the presence of train tracks – it’s a drawing of a bicycle with its wheel lodged in the gap in the track, with a bicyclist flying over the handlebars head-first.

Pendleton

I’m considering going down there in a week or so, but vaguely. They’re having a poker tournament series at Wildhorse.

by Gomez on Oct 27, 2008 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Sometimes

They have the most beautiful standalone trailblazer in North America but they are absolutely horrible at signing highway directions.

Also they frequently use Clearview, the idiotic new font that is slowly starting to replace FHWA Gothic (The only place in this area I know of you can find Clearview is on the Seatac Airport signage)

Determined, Jonesing Commentor | Proud proprietor of Washingtonhighways.org

by Corco on Oct 27, 2008 9:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Clearview looks retarded on signs for the most part

Particularly when they try to put it inside reassurance shields. It has potential but no DOT has figured out how to use it on BGSs- it works as the font that lists the airlines coming into Seatac, but not when the font has to be particularly huge

I'm still amazed that people left the Bridge early.

if I were present at the end of a historic achievement by my team, I’d stay till after the game was over and cheer my fucking lungs out for my team in recognition of their awesomeness.

I think all big Premiership teams have a cadre of bandwagoners/casual fans

that expect every game to be a stylish 5-0 win, and when it’s not forthcoming they bail. It’s too bad. I know Arsenal has their share, and it is incredibly annoying. You paid to watch 90 minutes of football, stay there and watch it.

All well and good but...

1) it’s just the done thing, and I hate it. Just about equal to walking out of a horror film before the killer is unmasked. Unless a game is a foregone conclusion then it’s just madness. It happens all the way, right from top level (England games are awful for it, but then it does take 40 mins plus to get out afterwards) to grass roots (my local team only attracts 1,500-2,000 and you know that a good hundred or so will have left before the board goes up for added minutes).

2) are Chelsea fans so die-hard that they would recognise such achievement anyway? The hardened fans are so priced out of attending these games anyway.

I think the hardened fans are the ones that stay to the whistle

At least the ones that can still afford tickets. My best friend in London has been an Arsenal season ticket holder since he was a kid – his dad was, his dad’s dad was, etc. Anyway. My friend and his family live about a 5 minute walk from Twickenham, which means every Saturday that Arsenal are at the Emirates he gets on the tube at Hatton Cross and rides an hour up to Arsenal, and does it again at the end of the game. But he ALWAYS stays until the end.

Arsenal have tried to combat the ridiculousness of the Tube commute by leaving the stadium’s common areas, pubs, and restaurants open for two hours past the end of the match, and sometimes they’ll have live music, to encourage people to stay a bit and not overload the Arsenal and Finsbury Park stations, but it’s still a mad scramble to pack into the Tube at the end of a game, and the more casual fan, who just goes for a nice day out, doesn’t want to deal with all that crap.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Oct 27, 2008 9:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Finsbury Park

Part of the trouble with Arsenal is that Finsbury Park is the hub not only of said Picadilly Line but also the Victoria and mainline services north. It’s not just the tube that feels the pinch.

Despite upgrading the stadium they’ve done little in the past 10 years to upgrade the station, and as a result getting to/from Arsenal is a pain. Worse is forgetting that you’re going to a gig in Islington on the same night as Arsenal vs Liverpool in the Champions League and trying to get home afterwards…

Still, at least the trains run late. I can still get a ride home from FP at 1:40am. Result!

If I remember right

Arsenal’s commitment to redevelop Highbury into condos (otherwise known as OH MY GOD I WOULD KILL TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO LIVE IN THE EAST STAND) sort of got them off the hook as far as expanding either Arsenal or Finsbury Park stations, which is really too bad.

It’s on my “go back to” list. After Bilbao and Zurich.

Only went for 24 hours but was easily in my top 5 most incredible 24 hours of all time. Stayed in a great motel just a few hundred yards off the Burnside Bridge.

Meanwhile, there’s no way I’m going to be anywhere other than HERE for summer 2012. With bells on.

I’ve never been to a bar with an indoor fire pit before I went there. Still outragous sums, but a little more sane. £1 will roughly equal $1 by then too, you watch…

I have no real opinion about Manchester City, good or ill. I have a very good friend who was born in Macclesfield, though, who grew up a Stoke City fan; Man City was always his “big” team, while Stoke labored in the lower divisions. There was never a conflict between his sides until this season. Stoke are….not doing so well, so I wanted them to win this weekend. I have no problem with Man City winning that game, though.

this, again

internships are the lowest rung on a very tall totem pole. There will always be a large amount of “swallow your pride and make 500 copies the hard way even though you know an easier way – we’re not interested”. It’s a form of hazing, in a way.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Oct 27, 2008 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not even a hazing thing in most companies.

It’s “we’re paying this guy for 6 hours three times a week, but only have 3 hours of work for the day today”, so you get the backup job that usually involves pushing paper. All because you can’t trust the intern that knows the accounting system like the back of his hand onto a computer that has the accounting program.

I had to have an intern shred CDs for four hours because he was too quick at assembling sales packets, and they didn’t trust him with a UPS account to send out the packets to the salespeople. He was a fourth year student they later hired as a staff accountant.

Internships are competitive.

If they didn’t ask for resumes they’re probably get two times as many applications and end up interviewing people who are too lazy to put together a resume. It helps weed out the lame.

We don’t have applications at my store for that very reason; anyone that’s out and about can ask for an application and a pen and finish it in ten seconds. When we’re hiring I’d rather not have to sort through fifty applications and interview a bunch of people that totally suck.

My experience is all in the corporate/for-profit world so YMMV

but I’ve been on both sides of the corporate table as far as interviews go and what I’ve found is that it’s great to know a lot, but you also need to clearly demonstrate why your passion is relevant to the job being offered. It’s not enough to be passionate, and if all you have is unfocused passion it does tend to make people gunshy.

It's a moral dilemma

Should I spell words in AmE or BrE? I guess out of politeness we should be adjusting to accomodate our hosts, but then there’s a challenge in knowing which other words are misspelled, and I already have enough trouble making sure I remove all my idioms from the occasional post.

When I’ve stayed with friends in the US it takes me (and them) days to adjust. Get the speed of delivery right and be unambiguous.

By the time you’ve sussed it, it’s time to go home again.

Course not

It’s interesting. A sociologist would find it riveting.

Course, you go somewhere where a foreign language is spoken and you speak (or try to) in that language. Travel to a different part of the world where the same language is spoken in a different dialect and you change very little. Why?

Those boundaries are muddied when it comes to written text. An author is translated into AmE but a contributor to an internet blog comment isn’t.

It’d take a lot to offend me when it comes to use language, believe me! It is entertaining, just so long as it’s not an infuriating fad for us to post here and divert discussion so much!

Let me elabotrate, lest you all tell me to vacate the grass areas of your homes.

My first two cars had no media players at all, just radios.
All cars after came with CD players only.

I think it’s because I hate dogs, and therefore don’t ever smell like one.

My first car was a 68 VW Fastback.

No tape player, no nothing. We had a boombox in the backseat.

by royalcurve on Oct 27, 2008 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions

'68 bug for me.

First thing I did was put in a $35.00 Shucks radio and speakers so I’d have some tunes.

Man do I love midgets.

Not me

but my dad did own one of those old console home TV’s, with a turntable on one side and a radio/cassette/8-track on the other. It was a gorgeous piece of furniture, actually.

We were dirt poor

The only reason we had one was my grandfather was a TV repairman. He always gave us consoles that his customers could not afford to repair.

Hey, my second car had an 8 track

I’ve still got a bunch of 8-tracks, including a Ramones 8-track, Black Sabbath’s Paranoid, and a compilation of trucker jokes. In college I got a stereo that could record to 8-track, so I liked making comps of new music on old blank 8-tracks.

Then it broke, and I was stuck w/am radio. Then the car broke, and I was stuck with a bike.

We actually bought a DVD/VCR a while back

because my wife has a ton of videotapes that aren’t available on DVD. I just put Dogs In Space onto disc last night actually.

Yeah I've got a combo but it's a real cheapo job.

I rarely use the VCR, but it’s nice to know it’s there.

I can't promise a flawless transfer

at least by modern standards – the transfer is from an original VHS tape that’s a good 15 years old and was used when I bought it – but the movie is definitely watchable.

“I Just Called To Say I Love You” just came up on my iPod. Guess I forgot to uncheck that one when I imported “Stevie Wonder – The Definitive Collection”. Good heavens this is an awful song.

Stevie Wonder was capable of such transcendent heights

like SIr Duke, Superstition, Living In The City, and the like, that it’s all the more jarring that he crapped out a song like that. Lovely sentiment, very badly expressed. I’m not sure whether to blame the 80’s or not, but either way…ugh.

So, here's a curious thing

Am watching back a programme (yes, BrE spelling) from TV here last night (if you want to look it up, it’s called Dispatches, from Channel 4) about the poltics (zomg!) along the US West Coast, from Mexican immigation through to the Pacific NW.

Anyway, cutting to the chase, the guy pronounced Mt Rainier as Rain-E-ay. I always had it down as Rain-e-er. We’re probably both wrong – what’s right?

According to the ever-reliable

“The first four Eddie Stobart owned were named after singers, Twiggy, Tammy (Wynette), Dolly (Parton), and Suzi (Quatro). Names are now often chosen with connections to drivers, or to commemorate long serving employees.”

there’s a correlation between saying “Worshington” and saying “Nucyuler”. I’ve never known anybody that says one that doesn’t say the other. maybe it’s a genetic thing like being able to roll your R’s.
