So I'm trying to come up with a good punch recipe

for my upcoming Halloween party. Fish house punch sounds, interesting. Here’s the recipe for it , well ingredients anyway. Anyone have any good ideas for a kick ass punch?

3 cups fresh lemon juice, Powdered sugar or simple syrup, 6 cups (1 1/2 quarts) brandy, 2 cups (1 pint) peach brandy, 2 cups (1 pint) light rum, 2 cups strong tea* (optional), 4 cups (1 quart) club soda, Ice mold

by coolguyrob on Oct 23, 2008 4:35 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No that's just my gut reaction.

Honestly I couldn’t tell you how to make good punch, I was never in a frat. I’m more the type to just drink straight from the bottle. Plus, when I make things I don’t really use recipes, I kinda just throw stuff in.

by brayden04 on Oct 23, 2008 4:43 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And now looking at it it seems like

a 50/50 split, so no, I don’t think it needs more brandy. That should be sufficient haha.

by brayden04 on Oct 23, 2008 4:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah that's what I'm more used to as well

This will actually be in a punch bowl (well I’m using a cauldron) with a ladle and everything. So I’d kind of like something that’s strong, yet tasty.

by coolguyrob on Oct 23, 2008 4:46 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I figured.

Frats tend to have these type of things, but usually they are disgusting and put it in a trash bag inside a trash can or something. Sounds fruity, so it can’t be too bad. I wonder how powdered sugar would taste in there. Just seems like an out of place ingredient to me.

by brayden04 on Oct 23, 2008 4:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but why powdered?

If I have something that’s too acidic, say from lemons or tomatos or something, I usually use honey or regular sugar. I wonder if I’m missing the boat here and if powdered sugar works better. Although it may not matter as actually buying powdered sugar is a whole different process haha.

by brayden04 on Oct 23, 2008 4:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

When making cocktails with sugur,

I would always recommend using simple sugar instead of powdered sugar. It just seems to mix a lot easier. If you dont want to buy simple sugar it’s really easy to make: take two parts sugar and one part water and bring it to a boil. Then let it simmer for 10-15 minutes and throw it in the fridge for a few hours before you use it. Like you said, I’d start with less juice. Too much sour can ruin anything.

by FlaskInSafeco on Oct 23, 2008 7:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not really, I'm usually just a beer guy.

My experience with simple sugar comes from making rum sours. I went to Haiti this summer and they served lots of amazing rum sours there, so I brought back some Haitian rum to try to replicate it for my friends and family. It turned out a lot better when I used simple sugar instead of just dissolving sugar into it.

I'm late! And I think powdered sugar contains corn starch.

The sugar trick is crucial if you’re brewing your own beer, I dorked around with it for a bit and was having a lot of problems until a guy mentioned this. Also fixed some fermenting problems making root beer.

Ohh snap!

From the Mariner Mailbag:
"Do you think Carlos Silva will rebound and have a decent season next year and somewhat earn all that money he’s going to get?
— Joey W., Compton, Calif.

It has been my belief all along that Silva needs to shed some weight to become the pitcher Seattle expected when he signed a four-year, $48 million contract prior to last season. And losing weight is something he has promised to do during the offseason. Silva built a reputation as an innings-eater, but there may have been more calories in those innings than anyone imagined. "

Youse so fat, the mailbag is making fun of how fat you are. I honestly never expected the Mariners website to have something like this on it.

it’s still similar to a regular controller, with better range of motion.

How?

The people that like it can use it, and those that don’t can use the normal controls plus the nunchuck’s analog stick. I don’t see the downside.

I hate the OLCC

My afraid-to-fly wife has an airport routine. Get to airport, suck down a double G&T, then go through security, find another bar, get another double G&T, knock back a Xanax, get on the plane. Her flight this morning was at 8, which meant we were at the airport about 6.30. OLCC laws say no alcohol sales till 7. Feck.

On the other hand, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a double G&T downed as fast as my wife did at the stroke of 7 this morning.

by Phildopip on Oct 23, 2008 8:33 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not normally, no

but she threatened to quit her job earlier this year because she was miserable, so instead of letting that happen her company let her take on a slightly different role – her company bought another company and she’s working on the integration as a business-knowledge expert, going to the offices of the acquired company and getting them familiar with her company’s systems and practices. She’ll be gone all but about 10 days between now and the end of the year.

Aside from the politics of “give me this or I quit”, she took it in part to get herself over her flying fear, and that’s working to an extent, but the whole thing’s been more of a pain in the ass for her than it’s probably worth.

I passed out during the 10 minutes between me showing up at the gate and the plane boarding. Apparently they were calling my name over the intercom and I didnt wake up. Somehow, I still made it to my destination on time that day.

On my wife's flight home from Philly last week

they offered her a $100 first class upgrade. She called me to ask whether she should do it, and I said, well, you’ve got about 12 flights left to take this year – can you deal with the fact that if you upgrade today, on 11 of those remaining flights you’ll be in coach?

She upgraded (I would have too), but today when she checked in she said “damn I hate flying coach”.

and he got one of those random free bumps to first class. He took it instead of sitting with me, a decision I fully supported. It was pretty great though because he snuck me back some of the wine, fruits, and cheeses.

That's the only thing I miss about the ton of work travel I used to do

even after that job ended, I had enough miles/status to fly first class for about a year. It was a sad, sad day the first time I had to board a plane and turn right instead of going left. Now I mostly fly Southwest, where it’s irrelevant.

The 20 free Rock Band 2 songs were announced for download for November 4th.

Here’s the list:

The 88 – “Sons and Daughters”
Authority Zero – “No Regrets”
Between the Buried and Me – “Prequel To The Sequel”
The Cab – “Bounce”
The Chevelles – “Get It On”
The Cocktail Slippers – “Give It To Me”
Dealership – “Database Corrupted”
Endeverafter – “I Wanna Be Your Man”
The Ghost Hounds – “Ashes To Fire”
Hollywood Undead – “Young”
Kutless – “The Feeling”
The Len Price 3 – “If I Ain’t Got You”
Lesley Roy – “I’m Gone, I’m Going”
Opiate for the Masses – “Burn You Down”
Semi-Precious Weapons – “Magnetic Baby”
Shaimus – “Like a Fool”
Thenewno2" – Crazy Tuesday"
Tickle Me Pink – “The Time Is Wrong”
Underoath – “Desperate Times, Desperate Measures”
X Japan – “I.V.”

Seriously, what the fuck? I haven’t heard of any of these bands (aside from Authority Zero and Thenewno2), but I’ve now listened to about 7 of these songs on the Rock Band forum, and they all SUCK. If it’s not bad “metal” then it’s bad emo or garage shit.

Chevelle was the opening act for the first real rock show I was ever at in the late 90s. They opened for Static X (ok), Dope (awful awful awful) and Powerman 5000 (excellent). I’m also a pretty big fan of Opiate for the Masses, even if they are a pretty blatant Tool ripoff.

I know this is probably a polarizing question

but is Metallica worth seeing? I’m not a huge fan, I like them OK, but there’s still a fair number of “decently-priced” (I refuse to consider $66 after fees "cheap") tickets available. If I’m a casual fan, would I still enjoy the show? Do they typically bust out the hits, or just stick to the new stuff? I’d be more inclined to go if they still play a decent amount the Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets-era stuff – I know they’re pimping a new record, but still.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

They've been so bad since Cliff Burton died that I can't imagine they're good live.

I’m biased because I hate everyone in that band, though, so I’m probably not the best person to listen to.

J.K.L.

by acblue on Oct 23, 2008 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But by that same token I trust your music taste/opinions

and after watching Some Kind Of Monster, the only one I don’t really dislike is Kirk Hammett. I just felt sorry for him. My desire to see Metallica is more rooted in the “they’re one of THOSE bands” type thing – will I kick myself when I’m 70 because I never saw them?

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Oct 23, 2008 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Eh. I'd be surprised if that turns out to be the case.

THOSE bands are usually really good. Metallica hasn’t been for more than 20 years, and they were really only good for two albums.

J.K.L.

by acblue on Oct 23, 2008 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So I should have seen them in high school, then

which is helpful because that line of reasoning just saved me $66.

You should also know that I hate hate hate arena shows and that my favorite live bands are all bands that play to no more than 150 people.

There are bands I'd like to see in that setting, but they all broke up 20 years ago.

That’s not entirely true, I suppose, but I can’t think of many bands I’d RATHER see in an arena than a small venue, just bands I’d like to see that don’t play small venues any more.

I'll be the middle ground guy.

Keep in mind I haven’t seen Metallica since the 80s, but it was post Burton.

I was a kid, but I had a great time. I lived and died with that band back then, so again, this is not an unbiased review. But I think there’s a good case that yes, this IS one of those bands. They’re not going to be like they were, and hey, the Sonics are (probably) not going to be quite like they were in 1964. But that doesn’t mean you won’t have a great time. Unless they just play new stuff, in which case, yeah, you might not have a great time.

One of the last things I remember with clarity from the Acrop

was the dancer that had the tramp stamp. This in and of itself is not that memorable – there’s lots of dancers with ink – but this particular tramp stamp was memorable for its content. In lovely script along the small of this dancer’s back, in among some flourishes of ink, it said one word:
