Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Final Four - Ballot

So sometime in the next 24-48 hours, we'll likely hear who the next M's GM will be.  A lot has been said about all candidates, but I'm curious who folks around here believe will be the next GM.  I have my opinion who I would like it to be, and a pretty good guess of who it will be.  It may or may not be the same person - I won't spoil things too much, but it wouldn't be too hard to find my opinion on both 'round here.

Without further adieu, who do you think WILL be the next GM -- in the poll -- and who do you WANT to be the next GM.

And, no, I'm not putting an "I think you mean Thompson" answer on this poll.  It could be very well someone NOT on this list, who knows.  But for the sake of argument, I'm curious what people think from the names that are known...

I'd like to see Z-shizzle, but they'll likely go with Dipoto or LaCava.

My money is on DiPoto.

Screw you, Mariners. I'm back in football's loving arms. *edit: well, shit. This isn't going well.

Yep.

And since I can’t figure out how to do 2 polls, I figured it’d be easier to have people explain who they want in the comments.

Yeah, that bugged me when I made mine, I wanted to attach some of the why to each choice.

I just didn’t want to ask NY Yankees, _____* four times with different endings. Too damn long, I wish you could put a couple polls on the same ticket.

Yeah, that's why I voted DiPoto.

Yep.

Agreed on both counts.

Matthew, you're obviously a proponent for the front office to use sabermetrics.

Does Z’s lack of history using stats in his work concern you at all? Do you think he’ll put a suitable amount of stock into using sabermetrics? (Jeff or Graham can answer this too.)

by Double06 on Oct 20, 2008 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm a proponent of the FO hiring smart people, trusting them and listening to them.

I cannot really speak to which of the four would or would not execute that to my liking, I just have my personal opinion and given his tenure as a great talent evaluator and well received assistant, I think Zduriencik would be open to that path.

by Matthew on Oct 20, 2008 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm a huge fan of Z's scouting work,

but my only concern is that he’ll pay no mind to what the new school offers while half the division already does.

How's this go...

cameron=13>>>>>>>>>>>cuddy>>somethingorother?

Honestly, I think it’ll be Z-Man. It has all the makings of “See this guy I pulled out of my back pocket that I didn’t tell everyone about at first”.

I have no idea who will win the job...

But im rooting for LaCava. My favorite guy is not among the final four.

I'm just so excited. I don't care who it is.

I’m so optimistic, and I don’t want to pick one, because then I’ll just be a little disappointed. Right now, my reaction will just be joy.

I have never felt this as an M’s fan.

Ng is the worst choice

Therefore, Mariners’ Maxim suggests that Ng will be hired.

Headed in the right direction... as imagined five years ago?

That would be the Mariners.

With all I've heard today...

…I’m pretty sure Ng isn’t going to be the one.

Reassuring, but...

still frustrating that we don’t have a definitive answer yet.

Very reliable sources...

Nothing public yet. Should be announced tomorrow, though.

Seems they may not have completely made up their mind yet.

Entirely possible that’s why they haven’t announced it yet.

I still stand my REALLY educated guess that it won’t be Ng, though. That much I’m confident about.

I wonder what the holdup is.

Baker thought the M’s would announce within forty-eight hours and we’re towards the end of that window without so much as a peep.

They’ve already interviewed all the candidates twice. While the commissioner does discourage press releases during the World Series, we’re not in the middle of it yet, and the organization needs to send a message that they can keep up with the other division rivals.

If there’s nothing by tomorrow, I’ll be disappointed.

Personally, I thought the Spencer Hawes year

Ruined the development of this team. We were a run and gun team and then for one season we switch to slow half court.

It messed everyone up.

by Sec 108 on Oct 21, 2008 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Hawes was too good to not build the offense around

and it’s not like UW had explosive wing players that year anyway. What they really needed was for Lorenzo Wade, Quincy Pondexter and Adrian Oliver, with Justin Dentmon to develop so they’d be ready to run and gun again once Hawes was gone.

That’s where Oliver leaving, Pondexter becoming a head case and Webster never coming killed them. At least Venoy Overton looks like a real player, even if he did go to Franklin grrrrrr.

by seattlebruin on Oct 21, 2008 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I hope Tony goes to UW.

He doesn’t seem too interested in going there, but I guess he might change his mind. He seems to like Romar a lot.

Vindication!

by .Taylor on Oct 21, 2008 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Dentmon was never going to be that good

He is too slow to be very good at that level. Seriously, he is one of the slowest point guards I have ever played against.

by brayden04 on Oct 21, 2008 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions

And yet he absolutely annihilated Darren Collison twice this year

yes, the same Darren Collison that made First Team All Pac-Ten Defense. Two years in a row.

by seattlebruin on Oct 21, 2008 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't even know that...

But I can’t really watch much college basketball anymore. Maybe the Bruins were more focused on UW’s other players? I don’t know. I’ve just never been impressed with Dentmon. Collison should have left this year too, when he had the hype. He is going to have to share the pg duties again nexdt year, not good for his draft stock.

by brayden04 on Oct 22, 2008 6:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Naw, he just got flat out crushed by Dentmon one on one all game

basically by the end of the year, opponents figured Darren out pretty well – they just drove right at him and he was too small to stand in the way of anyone. He got absolutely killed the entire second half of the season and somehow still made first team all-defense

by seattlebruin on Oct 22, 2008 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions

I want and think it will be LaCava.

Though I wouldn’t mind Jack Zoidberg getting a shot.

Small update from John Hickey. A Tuesday announcement is not certain.

Why Why Why Why Why
Cubs GM Jim Hendry was believed to have drawn the Mariners’ interest in recent days, but they were denied permission to talk to Hendry, who was given a four-year extension on Monday.

I wonder how many contracts have forced donations to non-profits.

It seems like a good idea and is easy good publicity for both the player and club.

Be open minded about what you don't know.

by Jed MC on Oct 21, 2008 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Most seven- and eight-figure contracts stipulate

either a financial donation or a give-your-time donation to the charity of the player’s choice (or to the team’s foundation).
