When Ray Bourque finally won his championship, he was still a good player and actually worked hard to earn it. So dammit Griffey, if your stupid White Sox end up winning this series, it had better be because you did something fucking majestic. This I'm-terrible-and-simply-riding-the-coattails act is embarrassing for everybody.

After watching tons of Reds games this year,

I’d say that Griffey cost more runs from RF then he does from CF.

Say what you will (and most of it is true)

I would be happy for him if he finally got his ring. He may suck now, but he was the greatest I ever saw play (in person) back in his prime. You never left to go to the bathroom if Jr was coming up to bat.

I'm back to liking midgets too much.

by Thingray on Oct 2, 2008 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Griffey was indeed fantastic

it’s just a shame that his shot at a title is coming when he’s fat and worthless.

by Jeff Sullivan on Oct 2, 2008 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I've been saying this for a while now.

I don’t care about him getting a ring if he’s not a useful player.

He's not fat...

I hope to look like that when I’m 63 like Griffey.

I saw that.

I’d still love it if he could somehow make a great catch, or get a key hit to end up with a ring. I’m nostalgic like that.

I'm back to liking midgets too much.

by Thingray on Oct 2, 2008 11:41 AM PDT up reply actions

He's an icon. I'm rooting for the Rays, but if the White Sox win, all bets are off.

I don’t like the White Sox but Junior is the best sports icon we’ve ever had in Seattle. .750 OPS level lead glove or not, I would love to see him get the ring he deserves.

His career deserves the ring

Griffey has really put in enough to earn a championship. It’s just too bad that if he does it, it’ll be when he’s embarrassingly bad.

by Jeff Sullivan on Oct 2, 2008 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

You're right

Griffey is among them.

I’m not rooting for the White Sox or anything. But if they win, hey, good for the guy.

by Jeff Sullivan on Oct 2, 2008 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, you either have to hate them both or love them both.

It’s hypocritical otherwise, I think. I want both of them to get their ring. The best players to play the game deserve their due.

I don't know about that

I mean come on, A-Rod had 5 full years here, and he’s going into the hall as a Yankee when its all said and done. Griffey had 11 HOF years here and has done nothing since.

Of course

by Jeff Sullivan on Oct 2, 2008 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

not for taking a huge payday from Texas.

by Matthew on Oct 2, 2008 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

But as far as that Boeing thing goes, what the hell Alex?

by BrianL on Oct 2, 2008 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

So A-Rod was totally worth the money Texas gave to him, right?

Or at least close to it, I’d imagine. Hell, I’d have given Bloomquist $25 mil a year if it meant the M’s couldn’t hamstring themselves with stupid contracts like they’ve done recently

by ack on Oct 2, 2008 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

He’s like a boring robot. If I never had to hear him speak, or see him in a commercial or on SportsCenter, I’d be fine with that.

He’s an absolutely amazing player, maybe the best of our generation I respect him as a player, but I don’t have to like him.

I'm back to liking midgets too much.

by Thingray on Oct 2, 2008 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

See I agree with this.

To me it seems like he’d get Vidro’s 2007 OPS in a different way as a DH. But when he plays the field he’s such a detriment. But I mean he’s got a 21% LD rate. Even if his power is gone, I think he can still run a .750-.780 OPS. That’s good enough for some dumb team that’s not as dumb as the White Sox to use him as a DH where he’s only below average instead of incredibly horrible. It sucks that his only chance to get a ring is when he’s terrible…but if he got one I’d still be happy.

Griffey as a LF/RF: replacement-level
Griffey as a DH: ~0.5 WAR

by Jeff Sullivan on Oct 2, 2008 10:47 AM PDT reply actions

Well, his bat ended up ~average

so it comes down to how bad his defense is. I know it’s horrid, but wouldn’t Daric Barton (15 runs below avg at 1B!) and Wily Mo give him a run for that title?

Call me stupid

but I am going to harbor some hope that Yuni comes back in 2009 about 15 pounds of fat lighter. If Raul is serious about Yuni joining him for an offseason of workouts, we might get passable Yuni back.

I see no reason to trade Lopez

unless you get something awesome in return.

by Matthew on Oct 2, 2008 10:55 AM PDT up reply actions

But Furcal would look almost as good in blue as he would in red.

by Matthew on Oct 2, 2008 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

With as many holes as we have

it’d be retarded to keep him on the bench when we a hemorrhaging elsewhere

9=8

by JI on Oct 2, 2008 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions

I've been on record hundreds of times

saying I want them to trade Yuni if they can get something for him. I just doubt they can this winter.

by Matthew on Oct 2, 2008 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

They're not going to sign Furcal

So I don’t see how it makes sense to be realistic on this end, while we’re playing fantasy baseball on the other.

9=8

by JI on Oct 2, 2008 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

The Ms can afford to sign Furcal.

It’s isn’t fantasy baseball to speculate on what the Ms could do in reality. Speculating on what they will/will not do is more fantasy than this.

by Matthew on Oct 2, 2008 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

It doesn't make sense to hold on to Yuni in this situation

unless you are being offered nothing in return. The Mariners just don’t bench regulars like that. They move them elsewhere.

9=8

by JI on Oct 2, 2008 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions

What the Mariners did in the past

is not an indicator of what they will do in the future given a potentially new front office.

by Matthew on Oct 2, 2008 11:15 AM PDT up reply actions

The reason I try to move both of them

is that they are two somewhat lazy players who are the most hacktastic hitters in a terrible hacktastic offense. Signing Fucal solves one spot, and if you convert Lopez’s power into a lefthanded or switch hitter that can get on base you it to change the culture of this team.

As for Yuni, if you can’t get value that’s one thing, but if you can you should trade him because it’s wrong to block a guy who could play everyday. A lost season endangers his career.

9=8

by JI on Oct 2, 2008 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not disagreeing.

I never said don’t try to trade them. I said you don’t have to.

by Matthew on Oct 2, 2008 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd rather potentially waste a little resource (Yuni)

and for sure have Furcal on the team then either
-wait on signing Furcal until you trade Lopez thereby risking not signing Furcal afterwards
or
-sign Furcal and then trade Lopez no matter what because you’re unwilling to put Yuni on the bench

whatever the hell the Ray’s mascot is was dragging around a stuffed WhiteSox player (which appeared to have Ozzie’s face); in retaliation, Dotel took a Mascot doll and Buehrle ran over it with the Mascot’s ATV, nad abonded said ATV in the outfield.

Precisely the reason for the first time in my life I'm rooting against him.

The big fucking baby wanted to play center so bad he’ll ruin his team’s chances of winning. I may never root for another player like I rooted for Junior back in the day, but he really pissed me off this year and I’ve never wanted stupid roster construction to fail more.
