Ellis staying in Oakland
Oakland Athletics second baseman Mark Ellis is close to a deal that will keep him with the team for at least the next two seasons.
Ellis will receive a two-year deal that will guarantee him between $10 million to $11 million, with incentives and an option for 2011 that could bring the total value of the deal to something close to $18 million, a source told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
Nuts. That's a sweetheart of a deal.

I wonder what other teams would have offered him
I feel like he wouldn’t have found too much better than that just because I’m guessing most teams don’t think he’s that valuable. That said….pretty good deal of Oakland.

arak?!?!
What are YOU doing here?
Children, until we have taught them better, will be perfectly happy with a seasonal round of games in which conkers succeeds hopscotch.
A's fans! Welcome, and thanks for not living in Anaheim.
Vindication!

ellis had a lousy 08
plus offseason surgery
i wouldnt be eager to call that a bargain deal, basically market value
great defense, alternates a good hitting yr every other season.
if ellis is worth 5-6mill/yr imagine how much jose lopez will get eventually…8-10mill?
plus during the season, beane drafted jemile weeks, traded for 2b eric patterson and adrian cardenas.
also now blocking 2b/SS 05 1st rd pick cliff pennington
all these 2b waiting for a chance, a semi expensive ellis, and no decent 3b/SS
not the best use of assets IMO
Those prospects are not really blocked.
Patterson is horrible.
Weeks suffered a major hip injury. I don’t see him ready until late 2010, if not 2011. Injury set him back.
Cardenas is playing SS in the AFL for a reason. I have a feeling he will probably be ready in 2010.
Barring major acquisition for a 3B, Pennington probably moves to 3B/SS.
Ellis is HUGE for that pitching staff. Defense is huge.
Carlos and Victor Zambrano have exactly the same number of career postseason wins. Who would have thought?
Ellis is a 3-4 WAR player
This deal is awesome. Realistically, he “deserved” something like $40m/3yr or $50m/4yr.

Ellis is a 3-4 WAR player now
But when he is 33 yrs old what do you think he’ll be? Is anybody afraid he could just not hit in a year or two? Short contract so its not a big concern but he is old and I don’t know how sustainable his hitting skills are as he ages.

he's also been hitting in Oakland, disguising his offensive ability
but he could be a crappy replacement-level hitter and still be league-average overall given his glove. league-average players make $8-$10MM these days. what a steal
Beyond the Boxscore // Calling BJ Upton lazy is lazy.
I wouldn't say 5.5 for 1-2 WAR is a good deal for the A's
They need to get more for their money than a high payroll team to be competitive.

Who knows? Beane's so sneaky he might trade Ellis.
OK, shot in the dark.

Yeah but that is taking on a lot of risk to do so
Ellis is undergoing surgery and if he doesn’t hit at all next year you either won’t be able to trade him for much or you will need to eat a little salary to get something good out of it.

Even if Ellis doesn't hit at all he's still worth his contract
by Jeff Sullivan on Oct 20, 2008 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions
...assuming he doesn't spend too much time on the DL
but it’s well worth the risk

Don't listen to Asfan4ever.
Being and A’s fan is extremely frustrating at times, but a day like this makes it all seem worth it. Viva Ellis!
