M's GM Search
What is the status of the M's GM search?
I get the general feeling that Ownership is looking for a Yes-Man, and is getting ready to meddle in the affiars of any new GM that would come. I believe they stated that the new GM would not have anywhere close to the control of the organization as Bill Bavasi had, and we all know how much ownership meddled even then (not to say that Bavasi was any good... then again, WOOOO SPRING BREAK!).
Because of that stance, it looks like David Forst and Chris Antonetti declined to be considered for the M's GM job. I think of the four people that the USS Mariner wanted to be the GM, only Kim Ng is still in play.
So what will happen? Will the new GM be good, or will it be more of the same? Bavasi 2.0 or worse? Will ownership be selling any time soon?

I predict the new GM will be a person
but don’t hold me to that.

I'm going out on a limb here
I’ll predict that they’ll either be male or female

Can't determine much really.
All we can do is wait. You could go out and hunt for information on the candidates’ in the meantime but because most of them aren’t former GMs you won’t be able to pick up on their style.
Then again, I kinda done the hunting already. This place is about as good as any to post my thoughts.
- Considering that Armstrong flat out said “we don’t want a yes-man” I’m not sure where the feeling that they’re looking for yes-men is coming from.
- Even though Forst and Antonetti declined interviews, just the fact that they went after these guys shows that they’re pretty serious about picking the right GM.
- Out of all the outside candidates that are confirmed to have been interviewed (Kim Ng, Tony LaCava, Peter Woodfork, Jerry DiPoto, Tony Bernazard), only Bernazard seems like a less than ideal choice right out of the gate. Given what I’ve read about him I don’t see Armstrong/Lincoln making a serious run at him unless he somehow knocks their socks off with his plan to fix this team. Otherwise, I see nothing wrong with the other candidates, at least on the surface. The internal candidates Lee Pelekoudas and Bob Engle are pretty much longshots and I’d be surprised (sort of) if they made it passed the first round.
- We have ZERO idea what “less power” means in the context of rebuilding a team. Could be something like they need to discuss major trades and acquisitions through the committee before they’re made. This could suck at times but if the GM knows how to evaluate talent when coming up with alternative solutions this shouldn’t be much of a problem.
- Management won’t allow “Bavasi 2.0” to exist. This is pretty much impossible. “Pat Gillick 2.0” on the other hand…..
- Ownership is here to stay for the time being. This doesn’t exactly instill people with confidence.
Not going to get much else besides this until the GM is hired.

I stopped paying attention to the search when I heard Armstrong
say that no one person will have authority and that he and Lincoln and other will all have input in decision making

What if Armstrong is the new Beane?
Man we would have on our face after that one.
