American Gladiators

Anybody else watching this? Not bad so far. I used to watch this all the time as a kid, so I've really been looking forward to it.

So far:

Good-Powerball, hard hitting action, referree shouting "Gladiators reeeeeeeaaaadddddyyyyyyyy!", Hogan not using the opportunity to pimp Hulkamania, Joust and Hangtough were good.

Bad-No Gladiators theme song, retarded sad backstories for the competitors, and there's a gladiator named Helga that looks like a manbeast. Oh and no mullets.

This is either gonna be really awesome, or it's really really gonna suck. All I know is if they don't have Assault, I'm never watching another episode. Edit: And we have a mullet sighting!

This was awesome.
I loved it, it seemed semi scripted at points, but otherwise it was hilariously awesome to watch.

YES! Assault!
And yeah, this has been pretty sweet so far.

Meh
I like the idea, I think it is fun to watch, but I don't like when I see a "gladiator" give up or not try hard. For example, I just watched this kid try to run through the "walls" of gladiators that stand there and try to prevent him from passing them. The gladiator hit him in the face with the pads he was holding, but afterwards didn't bother to try to stop him when the kid just ducked down afterwards.

Also, I could go without all the scripting. It would still be fun to watch if it was all real.

Jose Vidro (DH - Ms) was arrested today in an Idaho Bathroom for having a wide stance and sucking.

by CapSea on Jan 6, 2008 10:08 PM PST reply actions

See
That was the key with the old Gladiators show.  Those gladiators had no problem with kicking your ass.  They didn't give in.

by Gomez on Jan 6, 2008 11:56 PM PST up reply actions

They did pretty well here too. It was just that
one event that Librocrat was talking about where they halfassed it. That event was lame anyways. I hope they don't do it again.

And as far as scripting goes, I think it was alright. They could of gone with some pretty obvious winners if they wanted to totally script it, like having Jeff(the old dude) win.

I hope this show catches on
American Gladiators was one of those shows that never should have left the air.  And I'm glad they kept the old format and events mostly intact.

by Gomez on Jan 6, 2008 11:59 PM PST reply actions

Me too. They just need to bring back the theme
music and get rid of that lame event where the gladiators are in that tunnel with the sticks and pads.

I was surprisingly entertained
This was one of those things where, at my age (25), I always think this: "YES! NOSTALGIA!" But then within about 20 minutes of seeing a commercial/trailer, I'm completely over it and never care about it again. For example, the "Punisher" movie, or the re-release of the Ninja Turtles Arcade game on Xbox Live. I always get excited, then totally lose interest within hours.

This, on the other hand, actually seemed fun. Watching that cocky prick in the red talk shit for an hour, then fall on his face eight times trying to get up the ramp, then cry on national TV -- it was pure entertainment. It may be a bit overscripted, but in sick way I enjoy rooting for these people to lose and look stupid. So thank God for the Gladiators!

this could also get dubbed over
and be pretty funny... especially with chad (skateboarder) and wolf...

Sunset Flip
I'm not sure what's better - that Wolf used a Sunset Flip to throw the old condender down the pyramid, or that Hulk Hogan identified it as a "sunset flip off the top rope" is his post-event interview.

That was awesome

Hellga seems pretty lame
And they made Powerball easier than it used to be.

In the old show the baskets had little openings you absolutely could not hit with a jump shot.  The new game encourages contenders to throw the ball every time they get tackled, because it might score.

I also don't like that they're reusing some of the old Gladiator names.  Siren and Titan were classic Gladiators.  Is it so hard to find names that weren't used already?

by Llewdor on Jan 7, 2008 9:55 AM PST reply actions

hellga was awesome
kind of like watching a ho-ram start - it's so bad it's funny.

she literally set off three rounds of bets as soon as they introduced her in the first event - height, weight, and what would happen the first time she challenged by someone

But she's immobile
and pretty ineffective in the Gauntlet.

For those who missed it, it's on again tonight
at 8pm PST on CBS, which apparently is gonna be the normal time slot it's on.

Not sure if it's a reshowing of last night's show or a new one.

It was on NBC last night
And given that one of the contenders thanked NBC for bringing back the show in one of his interviews with Hogan, I'm thinking it's going to be on NBC going forward.

by Llewdor on Jan 7, 2008 3:04 PM PST up reply actions

Ok yeah it was NBC.
CBS, NBC, whatever. I hardly watch those lower number channels anymore, unless it's the occasional football game. In fact, AG will be the first regular show that I've watched on those channels in years.

thought the assault weapons looked a little too difficult to use. Pyramid was my fave event. Also liked the camera angles.

A couple of annoyances
1.Quit going to commercial the instant an event is about to start. It's starting to piss me off.

2. The contestant back stories. I don't give a shit about their motivations or their families.

"Toa"
Is 'The Rock's cousin in real life.

I havent seen the show yet.

Titan looks lame. The other dudes seem awesome.

Wolf is a veteran and was on the UK version for a long time.

Justice was on Battledome (I miss Cuda!!!) and was on WWE's Tough Enough.

Mayhem is my favorite already, but ill have to watch to see if that holds up.

Question: Who are the weaker ones? There are usually one or two who arent as dominant as the others...

by Slica on Jan 7, 2008 8:35 PM PST reply actions

Oh yeah
And Laila Ali is a bitch.

I hope shes not annoying on this show...dont feel like hearing about her greatness everytime I watch.

by Slica on Jan 7, 2008 8:37 PM PST up reply actions

She's been fine.
However, Hogan has already mentioned his wrestling career and called the crown "Gladiatormaniacs". Oh and at one point he pulled the mic away from a contestant in the middle of a sentence so that he could speak.

I really really don't like Hogan. IRL, he's an egomanical prick. He pisses me off to no end. They need to get rid of him.

These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

by Goose on Jan 7, 2008 8:47 PM PST up reply actions

You know what
thinking about Laila, it never even occurred to me Hogan is on there too.

You are absolutely right. EgoMANIAC.

You ever hear his album in like 94 or 95? Yes a singing album with Jimmy Hart doing backup.

He sings a song on there about a little boy he met in the hospital and talked about how the boy is a Hulkamaniac in heaven now and other shit like that...the song was about the boy worshipping him.

Oh, and dont listen to the album. EVER. 'Beach Patrol' will end your life.

by Slica on Jan 7, 2008 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

Hogan is gonna ruin this for me, I know it.
I like the Gladiators and I like the events(except for the Gauntlet, that's always been lame, but it's one of the original events so whatever) and I don't mind Laila or the contestants, even if their back stories are annoying. But man Hogan is grating on my nerves.
These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

by Goose on Jan 7, 2008 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

Hulk Hogan and the Wrestling Boot Band
The song you refer to is "The World Just Lost Another Hulkamaniac".  Beach Pator is my favorite song on that album, but all are instant hits.  Linda Hogan was also a member of the Wrestling Boot Band.  I listen to that album at work all the time.  Have you heard the Macho Man CD?
Seriously...Who the FUCK steals another mans bobblehead?

I want to get into this show
I loved Battledome for the short time it was on...Gladiators was fun but I didnt watch it with consistency to know the Gladiator guys very well.

Are there any on the show better than others? Or has the show not been on long enough to tell?

by Slica on Jan 7, 2008 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

I watched this show last night, and it pretty much
ruled. I didn't think it was going to capture me the way the original show did when I was a kid (using body language to try to help out the contestants, yelling at the TV), but it totally did.

And, yes, Crush is gorgeous.
