You have corrupted me

For the last week all I have been drinking are Pyramid and Red Hook sourced beers. Tonight I got drunk off some Jager and then went to drink Icehouse to continue my inebriation. I could not drink it. I switched to Hefeweizen and ESB and was able to comfortably drink.

I am having issues drinking cheap beer. And its your fault.

I have never been happier.

Good for you and your tastebuds.
Last weekend I had the same problem when my bro-in-law brought over some Natty Ice.  I almost made it through one.  I decided I'd rather not have any beer than drink that.

Huh?
Pyramid and Red Hook ARE cheap beers.  Red Hook, in particular, produces some most heinous macro micros.

by Masque of the Red Death on Jan 30, 2008 7:21 AM PST reply actions

Couldn't agree more
I love anything from Deschutes, but many of the Microbrews have gone downhill.  I am not sure Pyramid was ever good and Redhook has gone down the tubes since selling off distribution to Annheiser-Busch.

by Sec 108 on Jan 30, 2008 8:20 AM PST up reply actions

Doesn't make sense
AB doesn't touch Red Hook's brewing or quality - all they do is market and distribute.  Red Hook's pretty much the same beer it's always been - which isn't my favorite beer, but Ballard Bitter will always have a place in my, uh, liver as the first micro I ever drank.

here here
I don't drink it much now, but I have fond memories of Ballard Bitter dating back to when it was the title of a Treepeople song.

Does it really suck now?

by marc w on Jan 30, 2008 8:26 AM PST up reply actions

The Treepeople were cool
I haven't listened to them in years.  Gotta pull that one off the shelf one of these days.
Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Jan 30, 2008 8:29 AM PST up reply actions

Treepeople, wow!
I haven't thought of them for years.  I still listen to Built to Spill though.

I am pretty sure Ballard Bitter as a brand name is gone and is now just their IPA.  It was my understanding that AB does brew and bottle Redhook for most of the country now.  Only the Redhook we get around Seattle is actually bottled by Redhook.  Just my opinion, but I always preferred the beers brewed in the old Fremont brewery.

by Sec 108 on Jan 30, 2008 8:44 AM PST up reply actions

AB only distributes Redhook
Redhook still brews and bottles its own beer

Of course, Black Butte Porter kings all,
but there's a beer from New Belgium brewery, 1554, that I've been drinking quite a bit lately. If you like Black Butte, you should like this one a lot too.

I've said it many times
They've never produced a bad beer.  Their bitters are really good, the Morimoto Soba is really good, and all their IPA's and stouts are great too.  The brewpub has really good food, too.  It's pretty much the Platonic ideal of the word "brewpub".

by pdb on Jan 30, 2008 8:14 AM PST up reply actions

Are you talking about the one in the Pearl?
If so, I've never been impressed with that place, or really Rogue beers in general. I love the Dead Guy, but I've never really been a fan of their other beers.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!

You are entering a world of PAIN, smokey.

by marc w on Jan 30, 2008 8:58 AM PST up reply actions

You're dead to me.
I don't know why I love Rogue more than all other brewpubs - lord knows I've been to my share - but for some reason I really like all their beers.  There's some I don't drink a lot, but by and large, if it's Rogue it's gonna be good.

The brewpub has better food than a lot of brewpubs, and even though it's technically "in the Pearl" it carries none of the pretension or annoyance that being in the Pearl would normally connote, which is one of the reasons it's a good place to hang out.

by pdb on Jan 30, 2008 9:27 AM PST up reply actions

I can see your point
and I agree with you wholeheartedly about the Rogue Brewery not being as pretentious as most other Pearl District places. But I guess what I'm trying to say is that given the choice between going to a brewpub that has decent beer and decent food (and probably the best brewpub and eatery in Portland), and going to a bar (like the Blue Monk) that has great food and a wide assortment of exotic beers, I'll choose the bar every time.
I reject your reality and substitute my own!

by Phil Hatzenbuehler on Jan 30, 2008 9:35 AM PST up reply actions

I see that, too
and if I'm feeling in a mix-my-beer type of mood, I'll probably head to a place like Oaks Bottom or the Blue Monk.  But most nights I stick with one or two beers, and that's when the Rogue becomes my friend...

Beer Question
So, I probably missed the boat, given that I'm out of college and have had max, seven beers in my life, five of which came at Nationals games.

But, I know that I'm not a fan of the heavy stuff, I'm not a fan of the cheap stuff.  The only two beers I've had that I've liked on any levels were Blue Moon and Sam Adams Winter Ale.

Can anyone make other suggestions?

Starter Beer
I think Hefeweizens are a great starter beer.  I personally like Pyramid, but I think just about any Hef will do you good.

Try a Weihenstephaner Hefeweiss and see how close to authentic Widmer tates, and with no lemon of course.

I'm not gonna lie
Blue moon with a little orange in it is pretty good and kicks any hefe's ass I've had.  Widemer isn't too bad though.  Alot of them suck though and maybe its just in my head but i tend to feel like i get more hung over drinking them.

I feel bad when I visit my family
My father will offer me beer from his fridge.  But it's crap like MGD, Michelob Ultra and Bud Light, and the micros and imports here in Seattle have spoiled me so bad that I practically can't physically drink it.  I usually refuse.

Sometimes I'll accept Bud Light since it's watery enough to offset the pissy quality.

by Gomez on Jan 30, 2008 10:02 AM PST reply actions

I actually don't mind MGD.

MGD is context-specific
In the summer, at a baseball game, I'll drink MGD, because it's the "cheaper" alternative to good beer inside the ballpark.

Redhook isn't all that cheap.
Unless you have a friend who works at the brewery... lemme tell ya, brewing date with most Red Hook beer makes a huge difference. If you got a batch that was just bottled, I swear you get tossed so much quicker.

I remember one day he came to work with a 24 pack of  Longhammers... that thing hits like a brick.

Just had their Nebraska Bitter
the other day, and I'd have to say it was pretty good - it's not the best bitter I've ever had, but it was definitely good enough to have more than one.

I should rephrase that.
Everything else that is a McMenamin regular beer is fine. Some of their seasonal beers are very good.

I think it was me
that go Corco onto Redhook ESB.

It was during a LL softball event that I went to a grocery store to pick up some beer for him.  Corco initially just wanted some cheap beer and I said "no, you're gonna drink like a man."

Well, until you start drinking beer from the proper glass, you're still a college fratboy in my books.

Good job Coroco - I have corrupted you - at least your wallet.

There are some statements that just
date a person.
TV is a good source of them:
"Yay! Sesame Street!"
"Put Matlock on!"

but alcohol is, perhaps, even better.  What people say about booze is like verbal carbon dating.

Nothing says 'early 20s' like
"Jaeger is pretty much the only tasty hard alcohol"
or
"Dude!  Jaeger bombs!"

It's like growth rings; it's science.

Jaeger is the one liquor which will induce
instant puking.

It all goes back to a night years ago where i ended up covered in blood (cut my hand on a rock puking) puking up glitter for hours (girls threw glitter in my drink, those bitches).

I had Pyramid Hefeweizen for the first time in

What about
Alaskan Brewing company?

I lived in Juneau for the longest year of my life and the one highlight was the Alaskan Brewing company was there.

I've always enjoyed the amber and IPA somewhat and REALLY enjoy their winter ale.  The rest i can live without.

Alaskan Amber is very solid.
And you're right, their winter seasonal this year was quite good.

I'll have to try their porter and IPA.

Alaskan Winter
is my favorite "regular" winter ale. My favorite hands-down right now goes to Delirium Noel, but since one bottle of that is about 150% the cost of a 6-pack of Alaskan, I put it in a different category.
