I have a silly jersey question:

I currently do not own a jersey, but I am considering buying one right before season starts. So is it really worth the extra 150 or whatever bucks to get the authentic rather than the replica. Also are they cheaper at the Mariner's Team store or online?

Really I just wanted to think of something else to talk about other than how stupid the Orioles are. I hate may the Rays crush you.

You coulda bought a Roberto Petagine game-used jersey for $50...

They had several others, too.

Depends
Are you looking to wear it a lot, or just to games?  The replicas are usually fine, but if you're actually planning to play ball in it you may want to shell out the extra money.

Ebay is also a pretty good source for jerseys, unless you're looking for one of the more obscure players.

Authentic Jersey's last longer
My brother gave me one as my 21st Birthday present, ummm 15 years ago, and it has held up very well.  I had a cheaper replica that lasted only about 4 years.  They cost more, but they have staying power.

by Sec 108 on Jan 30, 2008 3:23 PM PST reply actions

Where do you guys actually wear those things?
I bought mine last May but I only ever wear it when I am playing baseball.  I took it to NYC in August but no one in that city wore jerseys so I didn't want to look totally out of place [and it was too hot anyway].

Also what do you wear under the jersey?

And to think, I could have chosen to support the Yankees or Red Sox...

by EnglishMariner on Jan 30, 2008 3:27 PM PST reply actions

I only ever wear mine
at M's games.  I usually just wear a t-shirt under it.

No one in NYC wears jerseys?  Where were you?  Spend any time at all in Queens or Brooklyn and you'll see tons of them, most everyone in Manhattan's too busy looking cooler than you to wear a jersey.  Unless it's game night at the Garden, then you'll see a ton.

Manhatten
Didn't really venture much into the scarier places.

Sort of related follow up question: do you think I would be OK wearing my jersey to the Mets/Seattle games at Shea in June, and would it be OK to wear my hat to the Yankees/Reds series that I plan to go to?

And to think, I could have chosen to support the Yankees or Red Sox...

by EnglishMariner on Jan 30, 2008 3:39 PM PST up reply actions

I used to go to Shea all the time
and how OK you'll be depends on your ability to ignore loudmouths.  You won't be physically harmed in any way, but you'll likely catch a whole bunch of verbal abuse from the fans - but if you've been to a non-zero number of soccer matches in your life, it's nothing worse than you'll see there.

It'd be far worse at Shea if you walked in wearing either a Yankees or a Phillies jersey - most New Yorkers couldn't give a good goddamn about Seattle (the city or the team) so you'll just get some mild bollocking at worst.  Give as good as you get, if you're up for it, and you'll be fine - otherwise, just ignore it and go on about your business.

Cheers.
I won't be wearing my jersey then.  I'll be on my own and as such I just want to be left alone to watch the game with no hassle.  If I end up taking some one else with me though, then I'll wear my jersey and follow your advice.

I'm sure there will be enough attention anyway when the guys around me find out that I have an English accent - it always provokes plenty of questions/wtf's as to why I follow the game. ;)  Although after my trip to Shea last year I know that the crowd aren't as friendly as the Safeco fans!

And to think, I could have chosen to support the Yankees or Red Sox...

I know how you feel
when we were in England last year, my wife got off the plane at Heathrow wearing my Arsenal hoodie because she was cold.  She stopped at Starbucks and it just so happened that the guy behind the counter was a Spurs fan, so he started giving her some good-natured crap; she'd never been abroad before, she doesn't know that much about Arsenal, and she could barely understand his accent because she was jetlagged, so when she got back she gave me my hoodie back and said "I'm never wearing this again".

Question
I haven't gotten a new M's jersey in a while, and I think I want to get Yuni's. Should I get it now, or wait until Vidro gets cut so Yuni can have his #3 back

by seattlebruin on Jan 30, 2008 3:29 PM PST reply actions

the MAIN difference is the number/name
most replicas have basic block font for name/number

where as authentics have the legit number/name font/style.

replicas generally look like this

and authentics look like this

by PShwa on Jan 30, 2008 3:40 PM PST reply actions

A couple of more differences
There's some sort of difference in stitching, I've been told. (The authentics are double stiched versus the replica's single, perhaps?)

And the authenics will have the sleeve patches, as you'll notice here -- the team one on the left and anniversary or All-Star Game ones on the right, if applicable.

I mistakenly bought a replica BP jersey off the rack, and it's going to be $10-$14 to get a surprisingly hard-to-find an authentic sew- (versus iron-) on patch for it.

by PositionPlayerProd on Jan 30, 2008 7:54 PM PST up reply actions

Careful with the patches
I got two at Christmas, and they are damn near impossible to sew on. About 1/8 inch thick of plastic backing. Rally really hard stuff...

by Robert Lintott on Jan 31, 2008 8:18 AM PST up reply actions

Ah, I believe that's the rub
The "collectible" ones have the plastic backings and aren't meant to be sewn on easily. I think these are the ones the MLB prefers, as the powers-that-be would rather have fans buy a more expensive authentic jersey with the patch already there than get a replica and sew the patch on.

I've been told that the key is to peel the plastic off, if at all possible. (And if buying from an eBay seller, be sure to ask if the patch is a sew on versus hard plastic backed collectible version.)

Um... Ebay, guy.
I won a high quality Griffey Jersey for like 10.00 plus 7.00 shipping.
Baka.

You're Welcome, guy.
Not joking though. 10.00 is ridiculously cheap. I even got a cheap Griffey jersey (ironed on letters, rather than sewn on) for only 3.00 plus 8 shipping.
Baka.

I love it, though I am moving to San Fran, so if that to an oakland game, things would not workout well for me

to stalk a player and steal one from his house while he's asleep.

by Fett42 on Jan 30, 2008 4:21 PM PST reply actions

True
But it's somewhat safer to just stay home and tattoo the jersey of your choice to your chest and back.

by chaney on Jan 30, 2008 11:27 PM PST up reply actions

Authentics all the way
I just dont like the look of the replicas, the numbers and names just look down right bad.  They have some Jeff Weavers available now as well, should go good next to Carl Everett

The next logical question is
whose jersey do you get? The obvious ones are Ichiro and Felix, but who do you go with if you want to be different? I took that risk and got a Yuni jersey... back when he still wore #3. It makes me hate Jose Vidro even more.

And that's what it should say on the back. Also, instead of a number, it should be a hyphen.

Get a Tug Hullett Jersey
Heard it through the grapevine that he listens to Burzum and wears a Mercyful Fate 'Don't Break the Oath' shirt under his jersey for every game.

I didn't know anyone actually listened to Burzum.

That's Count Grishnackh to you, Mister
Tug's all about Filosefem[ing] them.

He also supports Gaahl's version of Gorgoroth. Tug is truly grim and frost-bitten.

Incidently, my friend sold the debut LP released on Deathlike Silence for close to $400 a few years back.
