would this trade be less severe if...

we coughed up the money, yet short term deal for andruw jones. signed silva, to a high pay short deal as well.

traded sexson to rangers, instead of broussard,

and we somehow able to trade (without selling the farm) to get back r. soriano?

just a thought about some what if's. feel free to blast it.

Here's what it comes down to:
If the Mariners were in position to really compete for the Series, this trade wouldn't sting.

I don't think they are.

So it does.

amen
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.

So if they make it to the series
this year, then what's the take on this trade... does it change or stay the same?

by MfaninAlaska on Jan 27, 2008 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

If I've been wrong this whole time
and that happens, I will have no problem eating some sweet delicious crow. You play to make the Series, and if the M's can pull it off, then that'll validate a lot of the stuff they've done.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 27, 2008 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

What if
they make the playoffs but don't make it all the way to the series?

by MfaninAlaska on Jan 27, 2008 10:17 PM PST up reply actions

Kind of hard to say
Ask me again if it happens.

If they roll into the playoffs and Bedard is pitching like a crazy person, then I'll probably be okay. If they sneak in because LAnaheim fell apart or something, then I won't be so thrilled. But I'm not doing a great job of explaining myself.

I think I get your position
I'm good at deciphering hung over conversation based upon your favorite minor leaguer being traded.

I've been a mariner fan since their inception, you aren't the first to be in that state talking baseball.  heh

seconded.
i loved the run they had last year. i always thought they were playing a bit above what i expected. especially, when you have weaver and ho, sucking it up every 4th and 5th day.

i'm just looking for a way to make this trade not seem so bad to me.

What bugs me the most is that
if the M's really want to compete right now, they shouldn't be trading away players like GS52. I understand moving Jones - I don't like it, but hey, that's the price for acquiring Bedard. But if you want to compete now, you don't send some of the best players on your 25-man roster.

grrr, GTE.

ah very true.
so you're saying, if the trade had to go down, you'd like a dbacks/oak trade. where it doesn't affect the mlb club?

If you're trying to win now
it doesn't make sense to subtract productive parts from the same roster with which you're trying to win.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 27, 2008 9:58 PM PST up reply actions

true
unless, you have a part in waiting capable of backing it up. which in this case, the m's do not. wilkerson, wlad in right doesn't comfort me much.

Right
not only do I not like this trade, but the M's waited way too long to swing it. Now the RF options are scarce.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 27, 2008 10:02 PM PST up reply actions

did
we ever get a reason why didn't tender a contract to guillen?

They never admitted that it was about the steroids
we just got that bullshit about "financial exposure" or something.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 27, 2008 10:05 PM PST up reply actions

would've been nice
if they just came out and said it, or tendered him one, knowing they'd get a pick out of it. if he resigned with us, this trade would be more justifiable.

And we could use that pick on an arm
who would instantly become our #1 or #2 pitching prospect, on account of we pretty much don't have any left.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jan 27, 2008 10:09 PM PST up reply actions

what grade player
was guillen? would that compensation pick have been a sandwich pick in the 1st round?
