Churchill - Bedard-Jones Update

Another league source claims he spoke with someone close to the situation in Baltimore and got the impression that Seattle was likely to cave on Morrow before agreeing to include Triunfel in any trade, but that no progress involving the right-hander had been achieved.

well according to churhill at prospect insider that sounds like better news then losing both jones and truinfel.

It would be nice if Morrow replaced Jones
but I don't think this is what it means.

So....
I'm a little confused on the Mariners thinking.  We want to include Jones but won't do Morrow why?  Doesn't Bedard make Morrow repetative?  Are the O's requiring Jones no matter what?  I guess what is the list of want for the O's?  We have barely any clue huh.

alot of speculation
and guessing is mainly all we have... damn slow time for seattle sports so this is about it

I don't get it either
If we're so convinced that Morrow is going to be t his frontline starter this year that we can't trade him then kicking him out of the rotation is pretty dumb.

My trading for Bedard we'll guarantee Morrow as a reliever, lowering his value.

by Corco on Jan 14, 2008 10:59 PM PST up reply actions

No it's not wierd
Of course the O's are demanding that Jones be the centerpiece of the deal.  He's the only bankable prospect we have. Morrow/Wlad/Clement MAY turn out to be above average major leaguers, but Jones almost certainly will.  Similarly, GS52 is guaranteed to produce.  That's what good GM's want.  Not Jesse Flop-pert.

The M's are convinced Morrow can miss bats... can be a stud pitcher... can be the next Gil Meche.  He's under team control for a few more years.  They also know pitchers capable of dominating from the Starting Pitcher role at the ML level are rare.  It makes total sense they want to keep him... even if he gets stuck in the bullpen for another year of "development".  Teams need more than 5 starting pitchers.  We've had to pay through the nose for mediocre starters the last few years... how nice would it be to have one waiting in the wings... ready to fill in when someone gets injured.

Also... if you're going to trade Morrow, imagine how much higher his trade value will be next year if he performs a bit better in 08 and maybe gets a few successful starts under his belt (either at AAA or with the M's.)

by johnbai on Jan 15, 2008 9:43 AM PST up reply actions

The problem is you only have 5 SP spots
and for the next two years they are all full.  I don't think its reasonable to expect to stick Morrow into a SP spot after 2 yrs in the bullpen.  We've already got a closer in Putz so the value of Morrow in the bullpen is pretty low.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 15, 2008 1:47 PM PST up reply actions

5 starting spots
but every team winds up using 6-9 different starters based on injuries.  Having Morrow as a swingman that could work long relief in the pen until he is needed for spot starts wouldn't be so terrible on his development.

Unless you're one of those that believes you can only become a good starter by starting every fifth day... and that you should do it in the minors until you're ready to contribute at the MLB level.  And I think there's probably a lot of validity to that.

Oddly, Morrow actually has the most to gain/lose depending on whether he's pegged as a reliever or a starter.  Since starters make about 8-10x the salary of relievers.

by johnbai on Jan 15, 2008 2:07 PM PST up reply actions

Well
just to be clear, you're talking about trading Morrow and protecting Tillman.

There's no way trading Morrow allows us to keep Jones.  Jones IS the package... the rest of these guys are like roasted carrots and potatos next to the suckling pig.

And if you'd rather keep Tillman, that's... um... whatever.  I don't know enough about Tillman to have an opinion.

by johnbai on Jan 15, 2008 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

True
I guess there's no real discussion since we are forced to include Jones.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 15, 2008 5:24 PM PST up reply actions

I think that right now
Tillman has a better shot of being an above average starter than Morrow does.  But I could be way off base.

This is from mlb.com
"Various reports continue to link Bedard with the Mariners as Spring Training approaches. A source told MLB.com on Sunday that the Orioles have given up trying to obtain reliever Brandon Morrow in the deal, and would instead accept Mariners Minor League Pitcher of the Year Chris Tillman. Baltimore also apparently wants left-handed reliever George Sherrill included in the deal"

i heard that the orioles demanded morrow in the deal and the mariners called their bluff but the orioles really dont want to walk away with nothing and now they will settle for tillman instead of morrow. It seems bavasi finally did something smart.

Just found out why the o's want sherrill
over at dov an o's insider said they want sherril because they intend to then flip him or jamie walker to the braves for Brent Lillibridge. Now it makes sense why they want sherrill.

Whoa!
So you mean that DOV isn't right a lot of the time.  I mean I never remember him ever being too optimistic or pulling stuff out of you know where to prove something.  The O's would never want Sherril cause their bullpen sucks and he's under team control for a few years at almost no cost.  No, thats a stupid idea, DOV must be right.  There must be some outlandish idea of why the O's would ever want Sherril.

(By the way, this was revised before posting to be more civil)

but the O's are rebuilding
why would they want a 30 year old reliever?

by Bearskin Rugburn on Jan 15, 2008 8:38 AM PST up reply actions

The O's suck at rebuilding
What have they been doing for years now.  Their bullpen sucks right now.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 15, 2008 8:44 AM PST up reply actions

I don't think they've committed
to rebuilding before this offseason.

They were hanging on to a lot of star power trying to "retool" as they continued to contend.
This worked about as well for them as it has for the Mariners and maybe the Dodgers.  These second tier payroll teams really need to rethink the strategy.

by johnbai on Jan 15, 2008 9:46 AM PST up reply actions

I don't know
why did they want Walker, Baez, Bradford, Williamson, Hawkins, Brower, Halama, Kline, Reed, Grimsley, Baldwin, Byrdak, Williams, DeJean, Groom, Ligtenberg, Carrasco, Brock, Perez, Trombley, McElroy, or Timlin?

Ibanez cards have negative monatary value.
You owe the world money just by owning them. For your curses to work, there needs to be a positive number in the equation.
