Churchill - Bedard-Jones Update
Another league source claims he spoke with someone close to the situation in Baltimore and got the impression that Seattle was likely to cave on Morrow before agreeing to include Triunfel in any trade, but that no progress involving the right-hander had been achieved.
well according to churhill at prospect insider that sounds like better news then losing both jones and truinfel.

I don't get it either
My trading for Bedard we'll guarantee Morrow as a reliever, lowering his value.

No it's not wierd
The M's are convinced Morrow can miss bats... can be a stud pitcher... can be the next Gil Meche. He's under team control for a few more years. They also know pitchers capable of dominating from the Starting Pitcher role at the ML level are rare. It makes total sense they want to keep him... even if he gets stuck in the bullpen for another year of "development". Teams need more than 5 starting pitchers. We've had to pay through the nose for mediocre starters the last few years... how nice would it be to have one waiting in the wings... ready to fill in when someone gets injured.
Also... if you're going to trade Morrow, imagine how much higher his trade value will be next year if he performs a bit better in 08 and maybe gets a few successful starts under his belt (either at AAA or with the M's.)

The problem is you only have 5 SP spots
by Edgar for Pres on Jan 15, 2008 1:47 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
5 starting spots
Unless you're one of those that believes you can only become a good starter by starting every fifth day... and that you should do it in the minors until you're ready to contribute at the MLB level. And I think there's probably a lot of validity to that.
Oddly, Morrow actually has the most to gain/lose depending on whether he's pegged as a reliever or a starter. Since starters make about 8-10x the salary of relievers.

If Morrow is a swingman only getting 10 starts/yr
by Edgar for Pres on Jan 15, 2008 2:28 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well
There's no way trading Morrow allows us to keep Jones. Jones IS the package... the rest of these guys are like roasted carrots and potatos next to the suckling pig.
And if you'd rather keep Tillman, that's... um... whatever. I don't know enough about Tillman to have an opinion.

This is from mlb.com
i heard that the orioles demanded morrow in the deal and the mariners called their bluff but the orioles really dont want to walk away with nothing and now they will settle for tillman instead of morrow. It seems bavasi finally did something smart.

I don't think they've committed
They were hanging on to a lot of star power trying to "retool" as they continued to contend.
This worked about as well for them as it has for the Mariners and maybe the Dodgers. These second tier payroll teams really need to rethink the strategy.
