The translation is horrible, and I couldn't understand about half of it, but it appears that Jones has been called back to Seattle.

Don't want to jump to conclusions, but I don't like the sound of that.

It does sound like he was hitting well, however.

What Im getting from that
Is they just want him to rest up before spring training.

I don't see how it would matter weather or not
he's actually in Seattle if a trade was made. I'm pretty sure the O's wouldn't care about paying the extra money it would take to fly him to Baltimore if he wasn't in Seattle.
These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

Its not the airfare...
if they are going to make a trade they might want to make sure the player is healthy and won't get hurt...hence bring him back.  Its really easy to be pessimistic today in Seattle

a spanish speaking person
at another site translated the main point of the article and it says that the manager luis sojo said it was unexpected and he didnt know if or when jones would be back but that he wanted him back for the playoff stretch which means it wasnt a planned departure by jones which might end speculation that jones was taking out for the reason for resting for spring training.

Jones hasnt been in a game
since three days before Christmas.  He got his work in.  Why would he go back, anyway?  The Mariners don't care about the playoffs down there.
Why is everyone getting so worked up?

Ah, one of my favorite things to do...
read automatically-translated baseball articles; some of the ways things get phrased are great! "Prodigious gardener"? Haha, yeah, that's one way to say defense is important. What do you suppose logging an "unstoppable" means?

The idioms can be interesting...
Unstoppable ones = hits

This whole debacle makes me wonder...
How much do GMs put into what the media says.  I mean, Bavasi has had to have seen that most people would agree trading Jones for anything outside Jesus is kind of dumb.  I think I saw one writer who thought it was a good idea.  I know the front office guys could care less what "dumb bloggers" think, but  do they assign any merit to anyones opinion but their own?  You think after the crapshoot that last season was, with the critique Bavasi got following those dumb trades, he wouldn't do it again.   I suppose the question I am getting at is: Do GMs completely ignore the media?
When I said "Free Chris Snelling", I didn't mean "free" as in send him to Washington for a corpse... I just meant play him.

by DKulich44 on Jan 13, 2008 12:01 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Bedard is Jesus
It's that trading Jones is so redundant that it doesn't make much sense doing it. Throwing in Tru, GS52 and Tillman is what makes it really retarded.

Unfortunately, I have no idea.
The place was too crowded, and the bartender was about as unresponsive as possible. So I told him to get me two Belgians. He told me what they were, but it was hard to hear him and he walked away too quickly. The rest of the night I went elsewhere and drank Mac and Jacks.

But I made note of the beer you told me to get, and I'm going to try to go to the place again on a weeknight, when I know it's less crowded.

From Wikipedia:
In 2007, researchers discovered LRRTM1, the first gene linked to increased odds of being left-handed. The researchers also claim that possessing this gene slightly raises the risk of psychotic mental illnesses such as schizophrenia.

by Edgar for Pres on Jan 13, 2008 8:04 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

neat
I hadn't heard of that. It codes for what is probably a neuronal plasma membrane bound scaffold protein.

But they don't make that last claim exactly. There is merely a statistical correlation, which does not necessarily implicate the gene itself but could also be something genetically linked to it (ie you can get the handedness without the schizo but you can't get the schizo without the handedness. So if there's any crazy in Jeff's dad, chances are he's got it too).

key quote
A team source says that he thinks that the "calling Adam Jones home" in the report was misconstrued as home being Seattle when home in fact meant back to his home base in Venezuela. The source believes Adam will be playing again for Lara. The Cardenales who were off today (Sunday) are scheduled to play tomorrow.

Okay
Just to randomly incite discussion:

http://www.orioleshangout.com/article.asp?ID=1299
"This morning we were told that a contact close to the Mariners front office has said the Mariners have an offer on the table for Bedard that includes outfielder Adam Jones, reliever George Sherrill, and right-handed pitching prospect Christopher Tillman. Although Jones would be the center point of the trade, Tillman is considered a guy with significant upside and Sherrill would help in the pen now."

I doubt it has any legs. But I bring it up for this reason:

Knowing that this trade will be made, and knowing Adam Jones is involved, how much/who can the M's give up where you won't kill someone. When I saw Jones/Tillman/Sherrill, I realized that I wouldn't be beyond hope if that ended up being the trade. I wouldn't be unhappy, but keeping Clement, Wlad, Morrow (blech), and Triunfel would at least raise my spirits a little.

Thoughts?

My guess
is that the package will be fairly small and similar to what you mentioned BECAUSE of the inclusion of Jones.  If we kept Jones, then we were likely to offer them everything else we had... Clement, Wlad, Morrow, Tillman, Tri, Butler, etc.

No no no, I know.
I mean...

Imagine you are Bavasi. You are now not good at your job, and you need to trade for Bedard. You do not necessarily care about your future, but you DO care about your health, and you are worried that if you trade a certain combination of prospects, the users of Lookout Landing will storm your house and murder you.

So, you, as Bavasi, consult (insert one of the users of LL here, in this case: "Matthew") and ask "Okay, this trade needs to go down, but I don't want to die. Adam Jones needs to be involved, and it probably is AT LEAST 3 people. Who and what is the absolute most I can give away that you will not murder me." And Matthew answers with..........

?

I know what you were saying
I just wanted to throw my comment in there in case anyone took the OH post as credible.

In answer to your question; I don't know. I tried to think about it for a few minutes, but the entire concept is beyond my ability to deal with. I can only deal with a BATNA.

Anything below that (and for me, Adam Jones is below it) is going to piss me off and I learned from the Raffy trade that no matter how stupid this team is; for the time being, I'm going to continue to root for it. It's only a question of how actively. (2007 saw an all time low for me in games attended per days in Seattle ratio)

Hm... yeah.
I think Triunfel, Clement + Jones will kill me inside, but I can probably live with some other combo. Still, I'm sure there has to be some sort of line for most people between "Dammit" and "Murder." It'd be interesting to find out what it is.

this from mlb.com
"Various reports continue to link Bedard with the Mariners as Spring Training approaches. A source told MLB.com on Sunday that the Orioles have given up trying to obtain reliever Brandon Morrow in the deal, and would instead accept Mariners Minor League Pitcher of the Year Chris Tillman. Baltimore also apparently wants left-handed reliever George Sherrill included in the deal"

Maybe there is something to this deal with tillman being involved instead of morrow.

by rturk89 on Jan 14, 2008 8:09 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't even want to give up Tillman
but I think I'm getting greedy.  Maybe if we don't include Jones although I'm not sure who'd they want if we didn't send them Tillman and Jones.  I also don't really want to trade Clement.  Morrow is free to go though.  Oh Trunifel should stay too.  It'd be nice to hold onto Wlad too.

So what does that come down to:
Morrow + Sherril + 2 other somewhat interesting players maybe (how about Tui and Feirbend)

Maybe that's still too much.

You gotta give up Tillman before Sherrill
if you're gunning for the 08-09 window.

If I had faith (I don't) in the Mariners FO and they went out and got someone like Lofton to stick in LF, pushing Raul into a three way platoon with Richie and Vidro at 1B and DH I would be fine with giving Baltimore this package for Bedard:

Morrow + Wlad + Tillman/Butler + Saunders/Reed/Chen + Triunfel

It's a huge huge price to pay, but it's nobody we'd need for 2008-9 and we could honestly be a 90+ win team on paper with Bedard in the rotation and Jones  + !Ibanez in the OF.

Just found out why the o's want sherrill
over at dov an o's insider said they want sherril because they intend to then flip him or jamie walker to the braves for Brent Lillibridge. Now it makes sense why they want sherrill.

I'd rather trade Sherril
and keep Tillman even gunning for an 2009 season.  I'd like to stay competative past 2009 so Tillman is important to that since all our old FA SP are leaving around then.  In 2009 I'm truthfully not sure how good Sherril will be.  I love him but by then he's gonna be 32 and not one of us can predict a SP let alone a RP.  I think our system has plenty of LHRP in the system and you should be able to replace Sherril with somebody who is almost as good (maybe i have too much faith in EOF).

Worst Acceptable Scenario
From a personal viewpoint I'm far less attached to those who've had less playing time in the majors, simply becuase I've not seen them enough and haven't had the opportunity to develop an emotional association.

I'd suffer more pain from losing Sherrill than losing Morrow - I've not had such a strong fondness with Morrow up to this point. Of those on the periphery of the majors, I like Clement a lot but am less attached to Wlad, but would prefer to retain both where possible.

Of the prospects, and what I've read of them, Trifunel and Tui would each be more damaging than Tillman.

On that basis, my tipping point according to your rules would be Jones + Morrow + Tillman.

Jones + Morrow + Wlad/Clement/Tri/Tui would be too much, as would be Jones + Sherrill + anyone.

I don't doubt it!
Was just trying to contribute to the discussion with a slightly different angle. I realise that it's less relevent to contribute underinformed opinions (hands held high on that one).

From everything I've read on here so far, though, Tillman doesn't get nearly as much press, or community members excited, as Trifunel or Tui.

It's a bit of a throwaway discussion because for many Jones alone is too much but, playing the game the way it was set further up the thread, that was pretty much my feeling.

I'd guess we'd all rank him over Tui
Tillman's a really interesting pitching prospect. I'd be surprised if he's below 4th when the BA list comes out.

Why is anyone high on Tui?
He's hit for some average at times, and I've heard he plays decent D, but what's the big deal?

I know his family name is royalty in this area, but so far he's nothing special as a baseball player.

Prospects are under-valued.

It's worth 1/4th of an ace pitcher.

Congressional Hearings
A comment from CNN's blog of the congressional hearings going on right now that almost made me crap my pants, before I realized that it was a smart ass comment:

"10:25 a.m. ET Cummings just gave a shout-out to Orioles owner Peter Angelos, who promptly reacted by trading Erik Bedard."

by Go Manures on Jan 15, 2008 9:25 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

He did trade Bedard
but he got so confused as to where he was that he traded Bedard for Thad Cochran, Saxby Chambliss, and Bob Menendez. He thought that Chambliss was the key to the whole deal, and wouldn't budge when the talks stalled over including Johnny Isakson instead of Chambliss.
