Jose Guillen extension hits snag

FoxSports had a blurbed:

"The Mariners' negotiations with right fielder Jose Guillen sputtered due to the after-effects of the Diamondbacks' signing of outfielder Eric Byrnes to a three-year, $30 million contract. Guillen can make a case that he deserves to be paid more than Byrnes. Starting in 2004, he has 79 homers and 304 RBIs, compared to Byrnes' 77 homers and 272 RBIs. Guillen, 31, is three months younger than Byrnes. While he has a history of volatility, he has been on good behavior this season."

heh
I knew it was going to be at least 9M+ per season.

I hope it doesn't get done.
I don't want Guillen here more than just for the one year extension (which won't happen).

word
2 years max
Only it turned out drug dealers and pimps appreciate art.

Ugh
We DO have Wlad, he may not end up being a star, but I'm sure cost/performance wise he'll be better than Guillen.  Hope Bavasi realizes that.  I'd personally call Guillen close to average (Offense+Defense) for a RF, maybe a hair above, 3/30 sounds about right for him (assuming he's a 2.5 WAR player).  I'd try to go 2/22 or something like that, but he wouldn't take that.  I'm also not convinced he's more than league average, I think 2.5 WAR is generous, given his defense, in which case 3/22.5 or 2/17.5 would be more realistic, at least I think so.

Think about what you just posted
"I hope Bavasi realizes . . . "

I won't shed any tears if it doesn't go down
Like many of you, I think it'd be better overall if we just took the option, let Guillen's current deal expire and went with WLAD in 2008... even given WLAD's weaknesses, or someone else if you feel he's not a viable option.

I was cool with the deal at first but I was also thinking it'd be $8-10 million per.  If Guillen's gonna want 3/36 or something, then forget it.

Weighing your value against overpaid players is a fallacy, and such people aren't worth negotiating with.

Jose can opt out of the option
# signed as a free agent 12/06
# $1M signing bonus
# 07:$4M, 08:$9M club option ($0.5M buyout)
# if club exercises 2008 option, Guillen may void & forfeit buyout
# if club does not exercise 2008 option, Guillen may exercise 2008 option for $5M, and club may void & pay buyout
# performance bonuses for 2007 and 2008 if player exercises option:

    * $0.125M 300 PAs, $0.25M each 350, 400, 450, 500 & 550 PAs
    * for GS at any position other than DH: $0.125M for 90 GS, $0.25M each for 100, 110, 120, 130 & 140 GS

# award bonuses: $0.15M for MVP, $0.1M for WS MVP, $50,000 each for Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, LCS MVP or All Star ($25,000 for selection)

No DH-ing
So he has an incentive to "not like to DH"...  Interesting.

That's more of an injury thing
Guillen hasn't had a ton of success staying healthy in his career, so that clause is more of a "if you're banged up and we have to put you at DH, you're not getting as much" suck clause then anything else.

Guillen's not the best outfielder on the planet, but we have other morons to chuck to the DH role right now anyway.

I will not make jokes in my sig. I will not make jokes in my sig. I will not...

Great contract breakdown eknpdx!
No wonder Guillen gets grumpy down the stretch if a coach sits him (past), in his mind he has to be thinking," a couple more games and another 1/4 mil." Dang, that's serious money.

Guillen does pose a small 'problem'; the type every team can dream of. Too many good outfielders, of course, its been said a hundred times, but the FO WILL need to do something about it. There shouldn't be any doubt in ANYone's mind what this org is going to do:EXTEND his Veteran'ness. That's what we do. Pay them waaay to long. The kids never really get a chance unless they're KGJ or DARO. The org clearly loves to set up retirement plans for certain players, and then sit back and watch said player suck until there's really no respect left in either player or fan. Then only 2 years left in the contract..YIPPEE!!
I don't think Guillen will suck for the next few years, he will be a productive MLB'er, if healthy. If Guillen is truely happy here then he'll let us take the option, and next year around July, decide whether to extend him or flip his ass for and old pickle, a bag of potatoes, and Rick White, cos we'll need him down the stretch. I love this home for MLB expression...ahhh, if only our team could provide something WORTH writing/reading.

WHY!?! GARCIA!! WHY?!

You know
we wouldnt be starting two rookies in the OF next year if Jones was called up and played regularly like he should of been.

by Slica on Sep 7, 2007 12:11 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If we lose Guillen
we still won't be starting two rookies... Raul-Ichiro-Jones makes one rookie.

Vidro isn't going anywhere at DH, and I doubt that Raul becomes a first baseman, and with his second half he's not getting booted from the team, so I expect next years outfield will be Raul Ichiro Guillen/Jones.

I think there are better then 50% odds
that Richie goes away this winter and Raul starts 2008 at first base.

by Jeff on Sep 7, 2007 12:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was my assumption
I didnt even think about Ibanez playing in LF.

Surely the Ms arent that stupid...are th---oh wait.

by Slica on Sep 7, 2007 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Shall we start a pool
on where Richie ends up?  Or you think there are 1-2 likely suitors?

by Gomez on Sep 7, 2007 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm...
I claim SF.  Or if Goose picks SF ahead of me, then Baltimore.  But, then again, BaltimoreMsFan probably has Baltimore claimed already, too, so I'll choose Detroit over New York...

I agree it will be the Giants
Not because it makes sense, but because it supports my theory Bavasi wants to add Ray Durham.

Hellllllllllllllllllo:
even worse infield defense

Goooooooooooooooooodbye: Ben Broussard

by Matthew on Sep 7, 2007 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not that 1B defense can get much worse
I'll take it if it means more range in LF and a marginally better lineup.

by Gomez on Sep 7, 2007 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

well you're taking away the one thing Richie
does well in being tall and leaving all the bad in the no range.

by Matthew on Sep 7, 2007 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ummm...
...how much DOES Sexson give you with his height? I'm not convinced it's all that significant...

by rtang on Sep 7, 2007 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

he has a longer reach
so he gets to more errant throws and throws reach him a little quicker than a shorter person.

I'm 100% on the WLAD bandwagon.
(Is there one?)  He's free.

Then again, I've always felt that Guillen was overrated around here, but I think I'm the only one.        I never understood why they wanted to go with a RH hitter in RF.  They should have stuck a lefty in there and let him take advantage of Safeco.

Im with you
Isnt he batting like a 1.000?

by Slica on Sep 7, 2007 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

plus a 3.000 OPS
WHAT ARE YOU DOING JOHNNY MAC?!?!

by MFAN on Sep 7, 2007 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lets hope he is not on roids...
1.000 avg is pretty impressive. I could only hit .900 in little league, yet alone the majors.

Just what we need
Another bleh player making premium money. If our payroll was distributed wisely, we'd be loaded with talent. I hate the economics of this game. I'd rather have one Vlad than Sexson, Vidro, Weaver, and Guillen.
Willie is ours, and you can't have him
