Build a team from the Mariners 25 man roster.

In his blog today, Geoff Baker says,

"If I had to build a team right now, one I wanted to make a playoff run with, it would start with Ichiro, Adrian Beltre, Jose Guillen and Betancourt."

I'm sure he means if he had to build a playoff team based on the Mariners current roster.

How about you? Which players on the current Mariner squad would you keep if you were building a team for a playoff run?

I'd keep the four Geoff cites. I'd also keep Putz, Sherrill, O'Flaherty in the bullpen, Hernandez, Morrow and Rowland-Smith for the rotation, and add Adam Jones and Kenji Johjima.

That's half a team.

That team has three starting pitchers, all real young, only three relief pitchers, and is missing second and first basemen and a bench. Good outfield, though. Good left side defense.

Can't say I'm really attached to any of the rest of the 25 man roster.

You can do alot better at catcher than Johjima
I'd keep Ichiro, Beltre, Felix, Putz, Sherrill.....and maybe Betancourt. But thats about it.
These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

Adam Jones?
I guess your not in the camp that thinks he's "all that and a party hat."

For a team thats going on a playoff run right now?
Not interested in Adam Jones. There are better options easily.

so you'd rather have Beltre than A-Rod right now?
I don't really get this prompt? Are we talking of all players in the game? If so, then Ichiro, Felix, Putz, The Gov'ner and maybe Green are the only people I'd have off the Ms.

Mauer
Pujols
Utley
Reyes
A-Rod
Bonds
Ichiro
Vlad

Johan
Peavy
Webb
Felix
Hamels

I don't think the idea is to build a fantasy team,
I think the basic question is "if you were going to rebuild the M's from the ground up, who would you keep that is currently on the team".

That's the question.
Look at it as deciding to keep players or get rid of them from the 25 man roster as part of a rebuilding process to create a playoff caliber team.

Can you?
I count 7 everyday catchers with a better OPS+ than Johjima.  That puts him squarely in the upper third of catchers.

Your team would totally suck
without any grit or scrappiness.

I'd take...
Ichiro, Felix, Putz, Beltre, Jones, Sherrill, Morrow, RRS, Green, O' Flaherty, Wlad (as a bench player), & maybe Betencourt & Kenji.

Easier to say who I wouldn't keep:
Ibanez, Vidro, Weaver, Ho, Sexson.

He's a tough call in my book.
Lots of potential, but questions about his work ethic, and two disastrous second halves in a row...

Bloomquist, Washburn, Burke, Broussard
and whatever is left of the bullpen?

To keep, or to get rid of?

I think those four are useful.
And of course I would ditch Parrish. Everyone else in the pen I am okay with keeping.

In order of eventual value, ignoring previous:
Hernandez, Jones, Ichiro, Beltre, Betancourt, Putz, Johjima, maybe Lopez--he did lose his brother, so it's not just simply two bad second halves in a row, Sherrill. Guillen's good but the Mariners need a huge bat somewhere and he's not likely to be it.  Also, I'm not counting September call ups.
This is the way the season ends, season ends, season ends. This is the way the season ends--not with a swing but a called strike.

An outsider's view
taking the 40 Man roster and widdling it down to a 25 man roster team to go to the Playoffs, lineup and rotation included, seems more appropriate than turning a 25 man roster into a 25 man roster.

So here we go. This is my lineup.

[.351/.395/.432/.827] CF Ichiro Suzuki
[.319/.388/.406/.794] 2B Jose Vidro
[.290/.355/.455/.810] RF Jose Guillen
[.280/.327/.496/.823] 3B Adrian Beltre
[.283/.342/.459/.801] 1B Raul Ibanez
[.279/.326/.465/.791] LF Adam Jones
[.275/.370/.497/.867]*C1 Jeff Clement
[.291/.362/.509/.871]*DH Wladimir Balentien
[.289/.309/.424/.733] SS Yunienski Betancourt

No thanks on Turbo at second.
His bat fits there, but good god he's atrocious to an already atrocious defense.
I said REFUSE to regress, God dammit.
