Meche Meter

Apparently, the Kansas City Star has a system to evaluate Gil Meche and determine whether or not he lives up to his contract. So far - Gil wins!!!

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/story/273026.html

This kind of makes me throw up in my mouth a bit. My only solace is that, if he keeps doing well, I can laugh at the fact that he's toiling away in obscurity in Kansas City.

Meh.
I wish Gil the best. He's not our problem and if he does really well, then KC can laugh at everyone else in the league instead of the other way around for once.

Ha, part of their criteria is if he wins
Like he can control whether his pop-gun offense gives him any run support.

by Gomez on Sep 13, 2007 12:35 PM PDT reply actions

I think it's disgusting and wrong
-- to wish ill on Gil. What has he done to deserve it? None of us had/have half the talent he has/had, and he didn't perform poorly because he wanted to. Using a professional athlete as the focus point to unleash your frustrations and unpleasant feelings makes no sense. Sure, he didn't live up to his talent. Blame him? No. I always liked Gil, and I was always saddened by his pitching woes. I never understood why people on these boards would act like he was a child-rapist instead of simply empathizing with him.

It couldn't have been a fun time for him. I can't imagine going out in front of 50K people who have gotten tired of you and boo you in your own field and then try to perform well. Some of us have the pyschology to succeed in tough spots. Some of us are Gil Meche. Perhaps I'm biased by the fact that my pyschology is closer to Gil's, but the fact remains that it's pretty repugnant to wish ill on a guy because he didn't live up to his talent. Maybe you wanted to be a trial attorney. Should we all wish failure on you for failing to make it?

sure it does
sports are entirely entertainment. They exist to serve the whimsy of the rest of us. If I want to wish ill on Gil Meche because I'm not socially able to do so on the annoying jackass across from me at work who plays his radio too loud, then so be it.

by Matthew on Sep 13, 2007 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions

But.. but..
I was told that I could listen to the radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven...

I hate to make a 180'
but I agree with you. It still seems a bit excessive at times.

Also, why don't you bitch at that annoying jackass? Atleast talk to your superiors about it. If you let that kind of shit fly, you're asking for trouble. Cheers man, good luck with your coworker.

by spittle8 on Sep 13, 2007 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I made up the coworker thing
it was just an example. We all have little to major annoyances in our life that society dictates that we ignore. Just like we all still harbor dreams of glory.

Sports is our outlet for both. They are professionals paid to entertain us. We are the people who decide how that occurs.

And why the fear of making a 180'? That just shows that you actually have an open mind to opposing opinions which automatically places you in like the top 10% of people nation-wide in terms on the awesome scale.

by Matthew on Sep 13, 2007 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes
But in this case, it's embarrassing because it shows I did not think carefully about what I was typing in the first place. This knocks me down on the awesome scale.

Last year,
Gil Meche made more money than I can reasonably expect to in the next 20.

He can cry me a fucking river.

by Graham on Sep 13, 2007 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

hm... so I take it you expect to make
$11+ million (using average of his contract) in the next 21 years? ;)

by LantermanC on Sep 13, 2007 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Closer to 7.
Nobody's ever accused me of being unambitious.

7 dollars...
...or 7 pounds?

Oh, you meant million.  My bad.

That's no reason to wish ill will on someone
That smacks of immaturity.

You should copypasta this template
and send it to Barry Bonds.  I'm sure he'd love to use it.

Af far as I'm concerned, Gil can do whatever he wishes, and if he strings it together well enough to win 20 games a year for the Royals, then more power to him.

Heh
I know what you mean, but unfortunately the first thing that popped into my head after reading your rant is this video.

Of course, I fail at posting videos, so I just link it

by DCMariner on Sep 13, 2007 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

also, year one
he's got four more to go

Richie Sexson was a great signing after 2005.

by Matthew on Sep 13, 2007 12:49 PM PDT reply actions

He was?
Sexson 2005    .263/.369/.541
AL Average 1B: .282/.358/.483

That much over average for a dime-a-dozen defensive position is worth $15 million?

by naviomelo on Sep 13, 2007 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Does the fact that he had a slightly above average
year in 2005 make the signing any better? Most people were dead against the Richie Sexson signing before he ever had 1 AB in a Mariners uniform.

Is that the return on investment you're satisfied with for $15 million?

by naviomelo on Sep 13, 2007 11:42 PM PDT up reply actions

If you take Sexson's 2005 salary (5M or so)
And 2005 production out of context, it looks like a fine deal. Matthew was using it as an example of why would shouldn't just look at the first year of a free agent contract.

Sexson's 2005 was pretty awesome. The contract has always been a terrible idea.

by Graham on Sep 13, 2007 11:53 PM PDT up reply actions

thanks for making my point for me
now do find-replace with sexson and meche and 2005 with 2007

by Matthew on Sep 14, 2007 12:06 AM PDT up reply actions

You're welcome
I was never arguing that the Meche contract was a good one.

If you think that the Sexson signing was a good one as of October 1, 2005, then please feel free to apply for any AL GM opening outside of Seattle.

by naviomelo on Sep 14, 2007 12:19 AM PDT up reply actions

wow
do you still not get it?

by Matthew on Sep 14, 2007 12:23 AM PDT up reply actions

No, I don't.
Please tell me how "Richie Sexson was a great signing after 2005." means the same thing as "Richie Sexson had a good year in 2005."

by naviomelo on Sep 14, 2007 12:24 AM PDT up reply actions

People thought the same of Richie after 2005
as they think about Meche right now.

Many people, anyway. Average people.

by Jeff Sullivan on Sep 14, 2007 12:27 AM PDT up reply actions

hey there Gil
no need to sell yourself short

by Matthew on Sep 14, 2007 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions

sarcasm
the same people who are saying that Meche was a great signing now are likely to be the same people saying Sexson was a great signing after 2005.
