Why would we trade for Parrish?

http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/archives/119730.asp

" Look for the Mariners to make a move today to pick up Baltimore left-handed reliever John Parrish, P-I reporter David Andriesen says.

Seattle, which will have to give up a minor leaguer, probably Sebastian Boucher, to get Parrish, hasn't yet decided on the roster move the club will need to make to get Parrish on the roster.

Parrish is 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA for the Orioles this season. And since the Mariners are in Baltimore, he can just change clubhouses."

Why you ask?
BECAUSE IT MAKES NO DAMNED SENSE and the M's like to make stupid-assed moves like this instead of ones for, say, David Wells, which make a LOT of sense...
Hey McLaren -- RAUL CANNOT PLAY LEFT FIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the fuck is with lateral moves like that?
Wait, no, it isn't a lateral move. Hell, John Parrish (xFIP: 5.23 & ERA+: 81) has pitched noticeably worse this season than Ryan Rowland-Smith (xFIP: 4.13 & ERA+: 130) this season.

The front office is a goddamn joke.

What's the point?
Our left handed relief is fine.

RRS and Potatoes are young.
Parrish is not.

You do the math.

by Jeff on Aug 9, 2007 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Precursor to another deal, perhaps?
I can't imagine how they'd view Parrish as an upgrade over RRS or whoever.  It's just toooooo stupid to even contemplate.

I'd have to think that they're trying to free up one of the young lefties for another deal.  WHY ELSE WOULD THEY DO IT?

They is all out to get us!!!

by WAB on Aug 9, 2007 12:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Because they aren't good at running a team.
How much more evidence do you need?

by Jeff on Aug 9, 2007 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously though
That's a whole 'nother level of dumb...one that is seemingly impossible to reach.

How could you possibly view Parrish as an upgrade to the 25 man roster?  It can't be done...

They is all out to get us!!!

by WAB on Aug 9, 2007 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a veteran.
The people running this team consider that an upgrade.

by Jeff on Aug 9, 2007 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

can't be another deal
RRS and EOF wouldn't get through waivers.

MOTHA TRUCKA
Morrow to the rotation?  SOMEONE, ANYONE TO THE ROTATION?!?!?!
They is all out to get us!!!

Yet, we make the playoffs if they start today.
I guess this means we should hope for getting lucky instead of smart.

by eponymous coward on Aug 9, 2007 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We should always hope for smart.
Unfortunately, our front office has forced us to rely on luck instead, because the intelligence ship has sailed.

by Jeff on Aug 9, 2007 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, I've pretty much given up on THIS FO
It's going to take a thorough housecleaning, ESEPCIALLY after this year, since now it's a case of "Hey, we've been vindicated!! We won games in 2007!" (barring some colossal collapse).

The only way Antonetti in '08 comes is if we tank the rest of the year, and I can't see that happening, so I'm basically rooting for lucky. Hey, it worked for the 2002 Angels and the Marlins, twice.

by eponymous coward on Aug 9, 2007 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?
So when was the intelligence ship in port?  I'm not sure it was ever there in the first place.  If it was, then, damn, I missed it...

they're....
actually just getting Parrish for the veteran-ness? I can't wait to find out which competent, accomplished, reliable bullpen pitcher will be sent down so Parrish can work his proven magic.

MARK LOWE
According to Larry Stone. Great.

WHY DO WE NEED JOHN PARRISH?
Bavasi, why must you make needlessly fucktarded personnel decisions?

So instead of RRS or EOF, who can probably do anything John Parrish does for cheaper, or David Wells, who can do what HoRam does way better than HoRam, we have John Parrish.

I knew it was too good to last
with the removal of Reitsma I was contemplating a diary poll about who people think is the worst member of our bullpen.

Consider:
JJ Putz
George Sherrill
Sean Green
EOF
RRS
Lowe
Morrow

it's just an insane bullpen. Glad to know that Bavasi needed to actively make the team worse.

by Matthew on Aug 9, 2007 12:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

... and they send down Lowe to AAA
to make room on the roster.

has hell frozen over?

by TyranT on Aug 9, 2007 12:42 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

actually, this makes sense
Lowe hasn't got to pitch much, I'm sure they want him throwing more regularly to promote rehab, and he hasn't been quite Mark Lowe of old (not that we expected him to).

You know who makes more sense though? Morrow. To the AAA rotation.

Also, do we now have 4 LHP in the pen?

PUKE
Wow, I retract my previous statements.
They is all out to get us!!!

Looks like we picked him up
Lowe sent down to Tacoma.

Awesome.

It amazes me that Bavasi
can be aware of blogs such as USSM and this one, and thus be aware of the merits of defense and building a bullpen from within the org, and yet he still clings to these cliched methods of building a team.  I mean, it would be one thing if our GM was Jim Bowden, who has probably never even used a computer before, but Bavasi devoted a weekend to personally answering questions from the M's blogosphere!

Any chance McLaren has something to do with this?  I'm sure, if you were to ask him if there's a player he wants right now he would say something like, "Well, we've got veteran pitchers in the rotation and professional hitters in the lineup, but we've got a bunch of kids in the bullpen and I just don't trust them.  Sigh.  If only Reitsma hadn't gotten hurt."

by Zack on Aug 9, 2007 12:46 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes... tis truly mind-boggling
That Bavasi et al would continue to make moves that aren't explicitly vetted and approved by the M's blogosphere... who exactly does he think he is?  ;)

by johnbai on Aug 9, 2007 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

So...they are intentionally making the bullpen
worse?
These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

by Goose on Aug 9, 2007 12:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't mind Lowe going to AAA
I'm still not sure if he's 100% and we don't need him right now, might as well let him get more work.

I don't see how Parrish is an upgrade, he's Jason Davis part II.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING JOHNNY MAC?!?!

I stand by what I said 2 1/2 weeks ago
I love the Mariners, but they don't deserve to make the playoffs.

According to the Orioles announcers
...during the game today.  Parish was put on waivers and the M's claimed him.  Then the Orioles  pulled him back off waivers once they saw someone was interested and talked to Seattle about a deal.

This still doesn't explain how the team is much better for the trade (perhaps besides a bit of depth).  But it makes more sense to "upgrade" for free via waivers.  Then maybe Bavasi figures he'll drop someone he deson't see as a good fit for the organasiation anyway so that the Orioles feel better about it.

I'm just trying to work through a possible thought process as an airchair GM.

by rdave on Aug 9, 2007 9:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That they even pulled him back is hilarious
What, like they have no one better?

Even if they don't, it's the Orioles, they suck, and Parrish has no real upside.
