Fruto

Looks like our old buddy Emiliano Fruto has been traded once again, this time to Arizona as part of the Wily Mo 3-way trade. For those of you that may judge a trade by the results, is there a chance Bavasi gets brownie points for "fleecing" Jim Bowden?

After all, he did get Turbo while Washington no longer has Doyle or Fruto. Just in case I do not have 300 characters, I would like to add that I still do not like the trade though it does take the sting out of it when Vidro's hitting like a madman as of late.

Yep
Despite all the complaining during the off-season and before the AS break about Vidro, he's getting white hot at the right time when we really need it.

Is it going to be sustainable? Of course not, and his .769 OPS will probably fall towards the .740-.750 range. Still pretty sub-average for a DH, but much better than we thought he'd be last June. Certainly better than an always injured Aussie and a reliever posting a 6 ERA in AAA this season.

I beleive they were using Fruto as a starter

I think most reasonable people*
never had a huge problem with the talent exchange as much as the amount of money owed to Vidro.  It's great that he's hot right now, but he's still a waste of resources $$$.

No we're not.
But we're willing to admit it at least.

Most reasonable people didn't have a problem
With two midgrade prospects being traded for a slap hitting ex-second baseman with bad knees? One who Jim Bowden hadn't been able to give away?

Really?

I still wish we'd have gone with Snelling
and let him and Raul split time between DH/LF

Then, when Snelling got hurt, Jones would have been promoted and stuck in LF and Raul would have been moved to DH.  Would have worked out perfectly!

It was both.
And keep in mind, this is year one of Vidro's time in Seattle, and he's way exceeding the line you'd expect from his ball-in-play profile while hitting for zero power. I'm glad he's done what he's done so far, but that trade still sucked.

it was both in a way
just like we'd still be pissed about the HoRam trade even if HoRam was running a 4.5 ERA. It wasn't so much the particulars of the deal itself (Snelling + Fruto wasn't going to fetch much anywhere) it was the fact that Bowden literally couldn't give away Vidro and we gave him 2 midgrade prospects and still didn't get much of a salary discount.

For offering to take Vidro AND pay him $6M/year we should have gotten him for free. Or, for offering Snelling and Fruto for Vidro we should have only had to pay him $3M/year.

For offering Rafael Soraino, we should have gotten a boatload more than HoRam. It doesn't matter how the trade ends up working out later on, you failed to capitalize properly on your assets.

You paid $500K for a house in a swamp district. Even if that district becomes the next Bellevue and you flip the house for $1.5M you still were stupid because even if you had some special forsight that the district would become huge, you could have bought the house next door for $250K and garnered the same rewards for 1/2 the risk.

The Colombian is NOT the issue here
Or at least, he's a minor part of the issue.

The issue was bringing in a slap hitter who looked cooked in on a longish-term deal for someone his age.
If we just gave Washington tons of cash, I bet a lot of people would've still hated the deal.  That we threw in two prospects just seemed gratuitous.

Let's say St. Louis wanted to get out from Rolen's deal (let's say it went through 2010).   If we paid most of the salary, many would wonder why.  If we threw in Rohrbaugh and Michael Saunders, that would be over the top.   (Hint: do not evaluate this trade by looking at Rohrbaugh's 2008 MiLB ERA).

Doyle's injury doesn't matter
Using Doyle in left (and DHing Ibanez) was a good plan because Doyle was a better (and cheaper) hitter than Vidro and we had an insurance policy in Tacoma (He-Man) should he get injured again.

by Llewdor on Aug 21, 2007 4:33 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Adam Jones
at the start of this season, was not an insurance policy.

Again, quoting DMZ
"If the Mariners traded Ichiro tomorrow for a can of Sprite, and next week Ichiro tore his hamstring while the can of Sprite turned out to be delicious, that wouldn't make that trade any better."

The Mariners traded for a DH who, while performing as well as could reasonably expected in 2007, is on the books for 2008 and likely 2009, has zilch in the way of defensive value, and is a prime candidate to be Wile E. Coyote next year instead of Roadrunner. They could have filled the position internally OR externally with better options.

The way I look at it is that in poker, bad players win their share of pots, because they are involved in so many of them that occasionally they'll suck out on someone. The problem is they make bad decisions as a whole. That, in a nutshell, is Bill Bavasi- hell of a guy, but this year is his 7-2 offsuit turning into a full house.
