Good News, Bad News, Non-News?

The worldwide leader's "premium" insider-only Rumor Central has Seattle interested in Mark Loretta as a fallback option. Ummm, right, fallback out of contention option.

That's the bad news. Good news is that apparently the Rays want to keep the 37 year old Reyes as well as Wheeler since he has a mere 1 million dollar option for next year.

Jayson Stark is the mentioned source so it could all be a bunch of horseshit.

Also, our hated rivals, those freakin friars, are trying to get Mariner-killer Mike Lamb. Already planning for next year's interleague play apparently.

How would Mark Loretta be a bad thing?
Of course, he's basically been a Jose Vidro clone for a few years. And the same organization that employs Jose Vidro as an everyday DH is looking at Mark Loretta as a utility infielder.

A Vidro bat as a utility man
Sounds pretty intriguing. However, Loretta's Vidro-esque numbers this year are in both the NL and in that crazy stadium.
Felix, you magnificent bastard.

Well, he's righthanded
A righty utility infielder is like the exact opposite of what this team needs.

by hcoguy on Jul 30, 2007 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions

We don't need him, no
but this team clearly isn't real concerned with filling its needs, and at least Loretta would give us someone who can reliably fill in for Lopez and Betancourt.

Fire under Lopez
Wouldn't be such a bad idea. Unless that fire is fueled with Wlad or Clement.
Felix, you magnificent bastard.

Loretta wouldn't cost much of anything.
The last guy he got traded for was Doug Mirabelli.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 30, 2007 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm more worried about the roster spot
than the talent traded for. 36 year old infielders when there are two guys mashing in Tacoma? Bleh. .706 last year in Boston. Bleh.

I have no idea about his defense though.

The Wlad for Dotel rumors
Really got to me. Loretta isn't much worse.
Felix, you magnificent bastard.

by Double06 on Jul 30, 2007 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Dotel would fill the 8th inning.
Loretta would be the backup infielder. Nobody trades much value for a utility guy.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 30, 2007 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Looked too much into what the players
Had to offer instead of the roles they would fill out. Damn this team...
Felix, you magnificent bastard.

Loretta wouldn't be bad...
I doubt we'd have to give up anything worthwhile for him and he'd be a better use of a roster spot than Elision is.
*Call up Wladam Jonentien!!!*

I'm cool with Loretta
hell, might even be an upgrade over J-Lo.

Nick Green must be REALLY terrible
if LAHRETTAH is considered a better INF upgrade.

I honestly think...
that the FO actually forgets we can get players from AAA...its our team!  FUCK
I fucking hate you Mariners

by kentroyals5 on Jul 30, 2007 10:29 PM PDT reply actions

yeah, the sad thing
is that it is so damn close. The Dodgers seem to be all over their AAA players and they play in Vegas. The Brewers too, although I can't seem to think of where their affiliate is located.

by hcoguy on Jul 30, 2007 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Nashville, actually.
A good 429.0 miles away. Distance between Seattle and Tacoma? 25 miles.
I am not Coach Owens!

by Coach Owens on Jul 30, 2007 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, I knew it was one
they and Pitt switched a couple years ago and since they have similar colors, I get them mixed up.

by Mariner John on Jul 30, 2007 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

It's that damn promotion policy...
.....the biggest step is from AAA to the majors.

So they aggressively promote and make 'em face adversity sooner so they can get ready for it...

Except...if they ALREADY faced adversity, how the heck are they going to apply it if they aren't given the chance?

(Obviously the Ms front office feels that promoting a rookie during a pennant race is not a good time---the only times to do it is during spring training or when the season is lost....)
