Reyes

Everyone's had a chance to vent against a Wlad for Dotel trade, but what about the rumored Clement for Reyes trade? There's talk of it being Clement for Reyes+Carlos Pena, but that's probably just at mlbtraderumors.com.

The article just says "young catching," so it seems to me that a Rob Johnson+young prospect for just Reyes would be something to aim for, but I don't know that Bavasi could swing something like that.

We'd be raping the Rays
If we got Pena and someone else for Clement.  If we can snag Carlos Pena, that means Richie's time in Seattle is probably coming to an end, so I'm for it.  Pena is the type of bat this club needs.

if we got Pena
I'd do back-flips all across the town, I'd be so happy I wouldn't even care if we lost tonight.

I doubt it will happen, but I can dream.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING JOHNNY MAC?!?!

Well...
At least two D-Ray's blogs like that trade. For whatever that's worth.

Howell/Pena
I'd think about giving up Clement for JP Howell and Pena.

Then we could possibly package Broussard with prospects for something useful.

That's a bit short sided Jeff
I mean we probably could move him for hot prospects like Choo and Asdrubal.

God, the people on the boards at the ST
are idiots. One guy said that the Mariners have finalized a deal of WLAD for Reyes straight up.

I wouldn't call them idiots
until we know for sure that Bill isn't doing something worse.

Well most of them are
even if it's true. A lot of them are saying "Trade WLAD and Jones" or "Jones isn't going to become a star."

Does Tampa need OFs?
They need a catcher, and that's about it.  Wlad makes no sense.

Since the organization apparently reads
and occasionally heeds these sites, can someone here or at USSM do a thorough write-up of why the Mariners shouldn't trade for a reliever? Or is it too late?
What do I look like, a guy who's not lazy?

Here's the thing with trade rumors
IIRC... if the rumor's going around in the first place, it's usually already dead.  The only exception is when a top star is involved, as with the Teixeira to Braves deal, for various reasons I admit I can't wrap words completely around, likely having to do with a top star being a known commodity, there being leverage in making a rumored deal known to up the offers, etc.

Notice that when most smaller deals happen, they just happen, with no predated rumors.

by Gomez on Jul 30, 2007 2:14 PM PDT reply actions

Except that...
The reason this rumor is going around is that Norm Charlton and another scout were in Tampa just yesterday. So that can't exactly hold true here.

by GoddardTP on Jul 30, 2007 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Scouts are always on the move at the deadline
Of course there's going to be a corresponding rumor when a team's scouts are at a game.  People are grasping for an alibi for said scouts' presence.

Most rumors die quickly or are already dead once we hear them.

How frequently...
does Nellie scout for the M's? I honestly have no idea, but it doesn't seem like that often. He seems like the sort they'd only send out when they're seriously considering a relief arm.

Nellie?
I think you mean (Thompson) Charlton.

Only Pitcher named Reyes I want?
Anthony Reyes.

Pry him away from St. Louis today, please.  KTHXBYE...

Hanley Ramirez>Jose Reyes
We've got Ichiro as a leadoff man who can steal bases.  We still need a #3 hitter, defense be damned.

Not like either one will ever come our way anyway though.

Al Reyes for Jeff Clement?
Al Reyes? The near forty journeyman? Al Rey . . . no, no!!!!
