The A's possess the two lowest starting pitcher ERAs in the AL, are run by smart people, and have a 49-55 record to go with a +8 differential. The Mariners possess a lot of middling crap, are run by clown college dropouts, and have a 56-46 record to go with a +3 differential. I don't know if Oakland fans hate us, but they probably should.

Go Mariners.

He's OPSing .521 against lefties, 472 in July
So naturally he will knock in the go ahead run and remain our starting left fielder for the next month.

I was at the game yesterday

Jeff, Do You Think You Can Simpsonize The
Soon-To-Be Mariner, Octavio Dotel?

Ugh - that rumour is inconceivably horrible; therefore, it probably has some validity to it. One of our top offensive prospects for a washed up middle reliever who will leave after the end of the season? Awesome, simply awesome.

I've gotten a few emails from M's-hating A's fans, so I know they exist, but the A's fan community as a whole has a lot of love for M's fans.  The teams we hate are Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, and sometimes Twins.

The general attitude seems to be, "Oh, isn't that cute. The Mariners are actually winning this year.  Better them than the Angels."

There are frequent comments on AN about how nice M's fans are.  I think it made quite an impression last year that you lost so many games to us and stayed in good humor about it.

something that no one has ever mentioned
in regards to Turbo and his "weak" first half....

could there have been a little league adjustment going on there.  I mean he did come from the national league to the american for the first time in his career... so it took him a half a year to adjust to how they pitch in this league vs. the national league before he got comfortable and was able to drive the ball more often?

Just curious.

But he is an extremely well-known roider. That Cust juices is one of the worst-kept secrets in baseball.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 29, 2007 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Ah...I see...
(sorry for repeating my question down below...figured it might get buried by Adrian's heroics)

I could've sworn he was in the M's system at some point.  Oh well, shows what I know.  You say "worst kept secret," but seriously, how/when did you start hearing about this?  I mean this guy wasn't on anybody's radar until this season, right?

I'm just getting the feeling the media isn't telling me everything about this guy.  So help a bro out.

by esoteric on Jul 29, 2007 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

He's been on the radar for a while
among statheads who looked at his numbers in the minor leagues and waited for someone to give him a shot at DH.

I first heard about his juicing ~5 years ago, when I was coached by a former teammate of his (Josh Glassey). Since then I've heard the same thing from about four or five more people.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 29, 2007 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks, Jeff
True or not, you have to admit the rumors aren't "extremely well known", since it's not even in the media buzz, like scores of other rumored 'roiders are.

Were the four or five more people who mentioned it recent or also ~5 years ago?

(And Josh Glassey, any relation to Conor?)

visiting A's fan (Shoreline resident)

by iglew on Jul 29, 2007 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions

My mistake
I should've said that Cust's juicing is the worst-kept secret among people in the game. There's a reason that stat line of his never really got him a legitimate chance until now.

I didn't hear it from everybody ~5 years ago; the most recent time was a few months back. Cust's name came up in conversation and that was pretty much the first point that was raised.

And no, no relation. This Glassey was related to two other Glasseys who also coached my team.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 29, 2007 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Well the A's have a venerable history of juicers
...so I guess Cust is just adding to a tradition that includes Canseco, McGuire, Giambi, and (sadly, likely) Tejada.

by esoteric on Jul 29, 2007 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Not that that's necessarily a problem.
Every team has juicers. The A's just have better ones.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 29, 2007 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

That's the depressing thing...
My primary team is the Nats, but I've been following the M's in the AL since Los Dos Joses (Turbo and Angry Man) went over to you guys in the offseason. And when you develop an emotional attachment to a team (as I have with both), it really eats away at you to think one of "your guys" could be, well, cheating..

This might be a touchy subject, but what's the general feeling about the longstanding rumors that Beltre was juicing during his incredible contract year with the Dodgers?  (Hope I'm not opening a nasty can o'worms with this...)

by esoteric on Jul 29, 2007 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't think Beltre's the type.
He's had that natural ability since the day he was drafted. Bret Boone, though, that was obvious.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 29, 2007 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Sad but true
Which is why I cringe every time some fool journalists suggests the A's should sign Barry Bonds.

It's a sad part of our past, and the further back in the past it recedes the happier I am.  In the meantime, I don't want any new 'roiders.  I like Cust, but if he's still using, I want him gone.

So, LL'ers, once more I ask...
...because Adrian's (un?)timely funk-blast buried my question: what can you longtime fans tell me about Jack Cust?  I've noticed you all seem to heartily dislike him, and I've seen steroid rumors here (including Jeff's lineup card). Edumacate me, please?  Or at least point me to a link where I can learn for myself?

If anyone can point to actual evidence, even circumstantial evidence, I'd like to see it.

Chicagoan by way of Washington...Washington DC.
...and I listen instead of watching on MLB.tv because I love Niehaus as a radio announcer.

My story is a bit odd for Lookout Landing.  I was born and raised in the District of Columbia - currently in Chicago for law school -  and am a die-hard Nats fan (yes, they exist...I never could get into the O's).

But the M's have been my AL favorite ever since we sent Vidro and Guillen to y'all and Jeff changed the LL logo to the sinking ship.  I laid a bet with my buddy that the M's would be the big surprise of the year at the precise point when everyone else - you guys included! - was predicting that they would be disastrously bad.  I looked pretty dumb back in April when games were getting snowed out and Weaver was astronomically bad.  But I've listened to every single game, and become (comically) emotionally invested in the M's.
