Yes, I know that we are only 4 games back. Five days from now we may be looking at the Angels in the rear-view mirror. Unlikely, but possible.

However, if I were Bill Bavasi I would consider doing something drastic.

Am I crazy for trying to package together Jeff Weaver and Jose Guillen to get a stud AA or AAA prospect? basically someone's else's "Adam Jones."

If there is anything that is true, it's that MLB GM's will overpay for ML veteran talent. If the M's were an established starter and a lefty mashing OF away from being a legit contender would you deal Adam Jones for those two? Is that thought proposterous?

You have to remember that these two are established Major Leaguers that can help or even put a team over the top. Who fits that bill? I don't know. Atlanta? Cubs?

I'm really just trowing it out there knowing that GMs will overpay for vets in the middle of productive seasons (minus Weaver's April). I know that teams rarely give up "that guy" for a rent-a-player, but the M's could fill TWO holes for a given team out there. That cannot be underestimated.

Maybe you can't pry a Salty out of Atlanta, but wouldn't it at least be worth trying or the is white flag too much of a pride buster for a team?

On the surface...

no.

But if your team needed a guy to hit lefties and a starter that can keep you in games to make the playoffs or be a world series contender would you have to consider it?

I guess it would be like the Blue Jays offering the M's Josh Towers and Matt Stairs.

While those guys may not be anything to write home about, they'd help this team immensely right now.

I love Adam Jones and all, but I've never heard one fan of a world series winning team say "Man, I am so pissed that we had to trade player X for player Y to win the world series! I'd give it back to have him on the team!"

Buyers and Sellers

I look at us being both. I'm someone that still believes we have a chance if we make some improvements. I also think being Sellers makes us better. I think we all know the upgrade Jones would be in LF if Ibanez was traded.

I know people wonder who would want Sexson, Ibanez, etc. But GM's get desperate and you have to look and see who is on the Market.

I could see someone wanting Guillen

Not so sure about Weaver. Most of the current contenders have cheaper options that are just as good as Weaver. Of course you could always have a team that suffers 1 or 2 devastating injuries, then Weaver would look a bit more attractive.

So I was watching ESPN out of the corner

of my eye and they were doing their normal trade rumor segment. I think Ibanez was in it right after Texeria. Are they saying we are trading Raul for Tex or are they just saying Ibanez for anybody. I'm thrilled for either. I know, ESPN is useless...but trading Raul is too hard to ignore.
