Clear up room for Raul at first?
If there's any justice, Sexson will clear up room in his suitcase and take the rotting corpse of Raul Ibanez with him and dump that piece of shit in the San Francisco Bay.

And by that I mean clear up room for Broussard at first.

Really.

Yes, my dream

Silly turd!
It isn't taking anything off of your table if the torrenter person wasn't going to buy the program in the first place. If anything, it gives software greater exposure to people who otherwise would not have shown any interest. I know I'm going to buy various programs after getting them off of bittorrent.

Besides, software is exceedingly pricey as it is.

Ding ding ding!
I'm not paying $700, SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS, for Photoshop.
These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

by Goose on Jul 25, 2007 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah
It's pretty easy to play the starving coders line, which has some merit, but there's a difference in scope between pirating a $20-30 app like OOTP, that some poor guy labored over in his home for months/years, and pirating a $300 copy of MS Office that every 2-3 years will be outdated and will require a $200 upgrade.

I don't think anyone here is advocating pirating cheap apps, as much as the exorbitantly priced mainstream apps the conglomerates make.

Not that I advocate pirating in general... it's just that the scope and damage is not as black and white as the programmers side believe.

What is the difference?  Morally, technically nothing.  Fiscally, it's a lot less damaging to Adobe and Microsoft than it is to Markus Heinsohn.

by Gomez on Jul 25, 2007 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions

100% agree
Stuff like OOTP and other software that actually deserves my money have and will get it.
These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

by Goose on Jul 25, 2007 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions

I've always paid for my software
which is probably why I've never bought a major app like Photoshop or MS Office.  I'm not throwing that kind of money around for something that I can do with an old copy of MS Works or with MS Paint.

If piracy happens, you don't get money from those who took it, but if you take a hard line and it doesn't... you're probably still not getting any money from those who would've pirated.  You create a demand for piracy by pricing a product out of people's comfortable spending ranges.

by Gomez on Jul 25, 2007 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree, too!
Less profitable programs like that are more deserving. I might not be 'stealing' in pirating them, in the sense that I am not actually taking anything from anyone, but if it's something I would be willing to buy, then it must be done.
Willie is ours, and you can't have him

by spittle8 on Jul 25, 2007 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, it is
Just because it's expensive and you might want it, doesn't mean it's OK to pirate it.  If the torrenter person gives it to a friend who was going to buy it, and that friend gives it to another friend, and that chain continues, all of a sudden Adobe's out a lot of money.

Say what you will about the evils of big corporations, but Photoshop is an incredibly complex program that's taken years to develop, and is targeted to professional graphics workers and photographers - which is why it's priced as it is.

If you don't want to pay $700 for Photoshop, that's cool - pay $100 for Photoshop Elements, which gives the amateur graphics manipulator pretty much all the functionality they would ever possibly need.

If anything, it gives software greater exposure to people who otherwise would not have shown any interest.

And if that person already has a free copy of Photoshop, what's their incentive to go out and buy one? Or encourage their friends to buy one?

I work in software development, and while I can't defend the price of Photoshop, I can understand why they charge it - it's the fruits of a lot of people's labor and a ton of people's time.

I will never understand the rationale that says "it's expensive, so it's OK to steal it because I wouldn't have bought it anyway" - new cars are expensive, too, yet you wouldn't go steal a new car off the lot just because it's more than you're willing to pay for it, would you?

Here's my take on downloading
I used to work in the Software section of Fry's where I would need to have a vast knowledge of numerous programs and games because nobody else in the department knew jack shit. If I wanted to be successful at my job then I would need to buy ten thousands of dollars of software just to answer the hundreds of questions that I was faced with each day.

So I downloaded all that stuff, gained a basic knowledge of the program then turned that into 10 times as many sales as I would have had if I just read off the back of the box. The same went for games.

When I stopped working there I stopped this practice but during my time there it felt like it was a necessary evil in order to do my job right. Looking back on my tenure at that store I realize that all I needed to be employed there were two legs and 5% brain activity, but that is a different story.

Yeah, I'm pretty upset
that Freddie Ljungberg went away.  Oh wait, that's not what you were talking about, was it?  D'oh.  It's going to be an interesting season, that's for sure - I still have faith in the kids, and if Fabregas turns into 80% of the player he can be he'll have people thinking of him in the same way that we all thought of Dennis Bergkamp by this spring.

The title is probably completely out of reach, but one thing I can say is that I have never been given reason to doubt Arsene Wenger's player evaluation skills, so if he says AFC is good enough, I trust him.

Nice Guys Finish Third - Hopelessly lost, but makin' good time.

by pdb on Jul 25, 2007 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

For the record
I'm not saying piracy is acceptable, but only that I understand why it happens and why people do it, and that not all piracy is equally damaging per capita.  Sure, if every copy of Adobe or Microsoft whatever was pirated, both those companies would go in the hole, but there aren't nearly enough dishonest people for that to be the case.  It's not honest, but let's not act like a few people pirating a copy of MS Office is going to ruin the lives of several Powerpoint coders.

Heh, all the EA games I have, I've actually bought
MVP 2005, C&C 3,all the NFS games, ect.

It's actually been a long time since I downloaded a game. Hell...now that I think about it, it's been a while since I downloaded anything really...no wait, I downloaded the latest Die Hard movie, but then ended up seeing it in theaters anyways right after me and some friends saw Transformers in theaters.

Most of things I download these days are music and small programs like Nero(though I have a legal older version of that laying around here somewhere...)
