Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

7/2: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 5:10pm PDT

---------- ----------

Hernandez (4-4, 4.33)       Meche (5-6, 3.28)

Okay, look, here's the deal: after his last start against Boston, Felix was presented with all the data regarding his pitch selection and made some encouraging statements about coming out in Kansas City with a new gameplan. Evidently this was the first time anyone had suggested that he start out doing something other than "establishing the fastball," and he appeared legitimately intrigued. Over the last few days, though, he's wavered a bit, suggesting that either he's reconsidering or that he ran the idea by someone else who disagreed with it. So, at this point, I don't know what to expect. Flip a coin. There's a real chance that he mixes in a few curveballs and sliders in the first inning, but he could also very easily stay just the same as he's been for pretty much the last two years. I just don't know, and we'll have to wait to find out. All I can say is that, by now, some people (Dave included) and I have done everything we possibly can, and that no longer can Felix fall back on an explanation of ignorance. He has the information. It's in his hands. Let's hope he's willing to try something new.

And if he's not, it's still the Royals.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Not at all doubting you
How can we be sure that is actually Felix's Myspace or have you contacted him through other means. If thats the case the you don't need to say anymore. I'm just thorn on if it seems authentic or not. But I've learned to trust you guys so....

If it's not him, it has to be somebody very very
close to him to have the pictures that they do. The pictures on his myspace just aren't him pitching, they're him playing with his daughter(at what looks like a hotel room, him with his daughter and his wife at what I'm assuming is home, and him at what the caption says "is the zoo".

The first pictures of his daughter were taken in the Players Wives/Children lounge at the stadium where no media is allowed so those are almost defiantly personal photos.

Here's the thing that bugs me
Why in the world are they letting a 21 year-old kid have so much autonomy re: pitch selection?

He isn't Roger Clemens or Greg Maddux.  Call pitches from the dugout.

That wouldn't help.
The dugout has the same philosophy.

Well this certainly
puts an interesting spin on today's game! I had debated on working tonight (since I set my own work schedule), but perhaps I'll put it off until tomorrow just to watch what happens.

If he mixes his pitches in the early going, I think we know who to thank. If not, that person in his ear should be tied up in a basement until his next start is over.

For what it's worth,
Felix hasn't approved my myspace comment on his page where I said I hope we get to see some more of that nasty curveball this year. I bet he would have approved it if I said I hope we get to see more first inning fastballs.

by Slozbury Stouvre on Jul 2, 2007 1:20 PM PDT reply actions

by TheMarinator on Jul 2, 2007 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

It would be nearly impossible to tell
since many players usually develop under many different coaches, and there's no telling how much of their ability or lack thereof is a self product, how much is a product of poor talent selection, and how much is a product of coaching.  It boggles my mind just to try and think of the many variables.

by Goose on Jul 2, 2007 1:21 PM PDT reply actions

For that package, yeah.
And maaaaybe for Wlad/Clement/one of those two. But definitely not AJ.

Still, Imagine how good this team would be with Burly (refuse to spell it correctly), Jones in left and Felix mixing his pitchers. It's enough to salivate.

by Slozbury Stouvre on Jul 2, 2007 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions

For a 3 month rental?
A 1-2 playoff punch of Felix/Buehlre would certainly give this team a legit shot of going all the way. Chances like that don't come along very often, and I think if the opportunity presents itself you make the deal.

Balentin, Rob Johnson, and Feirabend/Baek would be a deal I would do in a New York minute. If they wanted Balentin and Clement I don't know if I pull that trigger. There just aren't enough LH power hitters in the farm system right now to deal the best prospect away.

Guess it depends how badly we want to try and win this season, and if the FO thinks we have a real legit shot at doing something once we make the playoffs. If anything, it will show Ichiro that the Mariners are willing to pull out all the stops to win NOW.

by Dave Clapper on Jul 2, 2007 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions

this thing is so weird
fans making suggestions to players... not saying it wasn't warranted, but it'll be interesting to see how Felix responds. I've been excited about this game since you first made noises about Felix getting the info. At this point, I see four possible results:
  1. He establishes the fastball and doesn't do well
  2. He establishes the fastball and has some success
  3. He mixes up his pitches and doesn't do well
  4. He mixes up his pitches and has some success
Now, I'm pretty results oriented when it comes to my sports watching experience. I've read all the stuff about the mixing up of pitches possibly being helpful--I've also read that Felix needs to improve his command. Both seem like pretty reasonable ideas and I would be happy to see Felix have success in both those areas. So frankly option one and option four would be equally satisfying for me to watch.

But, if Felix does have trouble tonight, no matter what approach he chooses... well, I'm worried it'll get into his head. He'll think he's not doing enough of one or the other. He may not be sure which area he needs to be improved with. He may feel at odds with his coaches, and feel unsure about how to improve himself. I suppose he might go through that any time he struggles, but this situation seems like it could exacerbate any mental trouble that he has. I don't know. Just musing here.

by mary on Jul 2, 2007 1:37 PM PDT reply actions

The thing is...
Why does throwing 10 extra fastballs once every five days help his progress on improving his command?  If his command improves, it will come by working on mechanics and sheer repetition.  10 extra first inning fastballs every start is not going to make much of a difference, and just hurts his current performance.  If he ever improves the command of his fastball, sure, he can then go to it more if he wants.  But while he can't pinpoint it's location, he should find other ways to be successful until the command comes along, if ever.

by david h on Jul 2, 2007 2:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Well...
I think it's conceivable that they're worried that if he goes to his other pitches and leans on them, he won't have an incentive to try to regain his fastball command. And my impression of Felix is that he needs that fastball along with the breaking stuff to really be dominant.

I could be wrong, though.

by mary on Jul 2, 2007 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

a little more
you can say the 10 extra fastballs don't do anything for his command in the long run, but maybe they feel that Felix can't be successful until he not only can throw the fastball with command, but when he can do so confidently, knowing that he can throw it for strikes and miss bats. Telling him to move away from the fastball isn't going to get him to that place, mentally.

Maybe they're wrong to think it, but it doesn't sound too unreasonable to me.

by mary on Jul 2, 2007 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Devil's advocate
what happens if Felix goes to a 50-50 split or 40-60 split with his fastball being the latter of the two percentages but doesn't regularly throw those for strikes?  Isn't that in turn going to push him again into fastball counts?

I understand the philosophy of mixing pitches, but its not like he throws every off-speed pitch for strikes either.... so if his hits go down and his walks go up, is that considered mission accomplished?

I believe that if he can't command the fastball regularly, then he's going to remain what he is.... a guy that will have dominating performances here and there, but won't be doing that regularly, and we'll see the overall performances of this year and last year continuing into the near future.

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 2, 2007 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

let me fix that first line....
50-50 fastball/offspeed... 40/60 fastball/offspeed.... instead of the other way around.

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 2, 2007 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

He has worse command of his fastball
than any other pitch. So I don't think the walks would go up. But even if they did, yeah, I'd rather give up walks than hits.

He's been pretty awesome
1 run given up in the 1st because of too many fastballs to the first 2 hitters. Then he started mixing his pitches really well. He hung a curve and gave up a solo shot.

That's been it. Very low pitch count. He's cruising.
