Why would he appeal a
one game suspension?
And thou said "Mix your pitches, thy holy Felix" and hallelujah we rejoice!

I think they call that an off day...
catchers get them all the time. Beware the mighty hand of Bud Selig.

Silly suspension but okay
I figured throwing him out of the game was enough for that outburst.

by Gomez on Jul 14, 2007 12:13 PM PDT reply actions

No it's not...
In fact, I think it should have been at least two.

You just DO NOT make contact with umpires.

by PLU Tim on Jul 14, 2007 12:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Did you see the contact?
It was completely incidental; Pudge bumped the ump when he turned to point at the plate.

by sammy on Jul 14, 2007 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Why does that matter?
You bump a game official while in an argument at ANY time no matter how slight the contact is it should warrant a few games off. PERIOD.

This is a black and white issue to me. Much like leaving the bench is a black and white issue in the NBA. Either you did it or you didn't.

by PLU Tim on Jul 14, 2007 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

You're obviously not
going to change your mind on this, but, in my opinion, the ejection was just barely merited because of a technicality. Any further punishment is an overreaction. The contact was less than non-aggressive; it was non-intentional.

I think the NBA rule is silly and too strict, but even Amare and Diaw left the bench on purpose.

by sammy on Jul 14, 2007 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed
Even the M's commentators thought he shouldn't of gotten tossed.

by phil333 on Jul 14, 2007 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions

No....
That was Dave Valle and friend of Pudge's.

by PLU Tim on Jul 14, 2007 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

That what rules are - technicalities
If technicalities aren't sufficient, then I can't imagnie what you think the basis for any rule is.

by Llewdor on Jul 16, 2007 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah
Better distinction needs to be made in the rules between malicious contact and incidental contact.  That's ridiculous that if you so much as graze an umpire with your sleeve during an argument, you're facing a suspension.

by Gomez on Jul 14, 2007 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions

What?
Theres no way he shouldn't even gotten the one game suspension in my opinion.

You could argue more that the umpire bumped into him. It was hardly a graze

Doesn't matter...
The contact was made because PUDGE was flipping out. That's ALL that matters in my book.

by PLU Tim on Jul 14, 2007 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

wow
Question

Have you ever played a sport when you were about to completely flip out on the ref? (basically any organized sports past middle school)

by Scruffy Lefty on Jul 14, 2007 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep....
Many times. I never got close enough to make contact with an official. Never.

It's not like Pudge was attempting to stay 2 feet away and the ump moved into him. You're not going to convince me that Pudge's intentions were to come within .5" of the Umpire, but that last .5" was "unintentional."

Leaving this discussion open to gray areas is not good for anyone involved.

This is my opinion and I HATE ML umpires. I think that they are instigating dickheads most of the time, but they should still be protected from any contact with the players/coaches. No matter how slight it may be during an argument.

by PLU Tim on Jul 14, 2007 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I should say I defiantly think
he should of been tossed but I still think the suspension is kind of harsh.

But like you said you can't really have a grey area for this type of thing

by Scruffy Lefty on Jul 14, 2007 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Personally....
...I think it was warranted, since Pudge bumped the ump not once, but twice.

Once, you might brush it off. Twice? Um, you just weren't thinking...
