The game has to be in prime time...
you can always Tivo it.

I stay up nearly every night past midnight to watch the M's, just to see if my bro gets in the game.  The extra inning games even longer.

by ppl4life on Jul 10, 2007 4:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm
just going to miss ichiro's first at bat.

by InSpokane on Jul 10, 2007 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

For one: I don't have Tivo.
And for two, I'm stuck at work anyway.

Guess I'll just have to catch the highlights.

Best all star day ever...check out

by kentroyals5 on Jul 10, 2007 4:44 PM PDT reply actions

woo hoo
though why AJ in RF and Guillen in LF? Should be switched.

Also, sending down a RP makes infinity sense. Morrow, Green, Huber, RRS, EOF, Mateo, Mickolio all have options. The odds that you'll need all of them in one game is practically zero. So why not go with just 11 pitchers and shuffle them back and forth from Tacoma as needed?

by Matthew on Jul 10, 2007 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Stupid East Coast Bias already
They discuss the 'entire AL lineup'...of course covering all the Yankees, Tigers and completely not mentioning Guerrero and Ichiro..

by ajaxpenny on Jul 10, 2007 4:51 PM PDT reply actions

Mateo & Mickolio are already in the minors.
So they can't be sent down.

Why do they keep putting
Joe Buck and Tim NYY McCarver as the Play By Play crew?

Anybody else see that Joe Buck Sucks sign yesterday?

Since it's San Fran they should have Krukow and Kuiper do it instead

Oh and if Ichiro goes yard they need to play the Funkblast song and Thunderstruck for JJ

Also, Buck seems to think Mays is the greatest hitter ever but won't say it.  I disagree. I would say Ruth, Gherig, Mantle, Foxx, Williams and maybe Musial were better. Maybe Greenberg if he had a longer career. I kinda like Joltin Joe as well.

But if we got a pitching prospect among the top 10 like Jones is (Homer Bailey, etc.), I'm unsure how I would feel after reading Dave Cameron's recent piece on how much AJ can help this team right off the bat, especially if we make him our left fielder like we should. "A reliable source has informed me this afternoon that Adam Jones is going to be called up to the big leagues to start Thursday versus the Detroit Tigers.

This is certainly good news, but apparently he is going to play right field and Jose Guillen is sliding over to left. That part is puzzling if they stick with that plan, but at least the Mariners are doing the right thing by getting their top prospect his due time in the major leagues.

To make room in the lineup, it appears the club is benching Jose Vidro and making Raul Ibanez the DH more often than not. To make room on the 25-man roster, the M's are either sending a pitcher out and going with 11 arms instead of 12, or are sending Jason Ellison out.

But can they send Ellison out after Sunday? Probably not. Bet on a reliever heading back to Tacoma."

RF?  Weird.  AJ in Seattle? Hell yeah.

Wanna know who also score on that? Brian Flippin' Roberts.

Ungreatful jerk.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING JOHNNY MAC?!?!

by MFAN on Jul 10, 2007 9:29 PM PDT up reply actions

It depends...
You guys can't say you wouldn't want him on the cheap.  He'd be at least the 3rd best pitcher on the staff.  It's just he won't come cheap.  Maybe Bavasi will pull a miracle.  Doubtful though...

by SethGrandpa on Jul 10, 2007 9:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Right.
It'd be great to have him, I just don't want to see Adam Jones be an All-Star with ... uh, the Marlins...

by Shrug @ Lookout Landing on Jul 10, 2007 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

oh fuck.
if we trade Jones for Willis... I just don't want to think about it right now.

by sammy on Jul 10, 2007 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I really doubt they'd offer Jones...
I mean they're calling him up.  If they left him down i'd start to get worried.

by SethGrandpa on Jul 10, 2007 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

They're not trading Jones for Willis.
Just because there is a trade rumor involving the Mariners, quit being like fans of other teams and automatically assume we're trading our best prospect away.

wondering why Ichiro knows no english...lol.

Over on Foxsports, I saw under the contract article...a bunch of clueless fans wondering why Ichiro doesnt speak english.

Amazing, in a world where things spread fast...noone gets it yet that Ichiro toys with national media and speaks good english.

I find it amusing.

by Slica on Jul 10, 2007 9:31 PM PDT reply actions

Its a travesty
Asians get so much shit in this country its ridiculous. There are other groups that get prejudiced against far more, but nobody seems to care about anti-asian remarks and ideas. Its convenient to think that Ichiro can't speak english very well. Or that he is a martial arts expert.

by hcoguy on Jul 10, 2007 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions

The thing is
Ichiro's probably the most articulate, thoughtful, well-spoken and intelligent guy in the game. Every American broadcaster who's ever interviewed him can attest to that.

by Shrug @ Lookout Landing on Jul 10, 2007 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, and he can turn a TV into a watch
Don't forget that :P

Eh, at least Asians don't get profiled and attacked like blacks and Latinos do.  I think these remarks are as bad as it gets for them these days.

by Gomez on Jul 10, 2007 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions

The reason most people resort to sterotypes
is because 90% of the time, they are completely true.

That's like one our cooks at work, Jason. He's half indian, half mexican. We were over at a 7/11 one morning and there were 2 van fulls of mexicans there getting stuff. I made a remark about "Hey would you look at that, mexicans in vans!"

Jason says "Yeah know, the other day my brother was bitching about sterotypes about mexicans. Well look at these motherfuckers."

So he went over and talked to one of them for a second in spanish, and then came back over to me laughing. I asked him what was so funny? He said "I asked them where they were all heading off to, and they said work. I asked them where they work, and they said out in Neilton picking brush!"

Hilarious. Sterotypes exist for a reason.

These pretzels....are making me thirsty!

My dad's side of the family is Asian
and the stereotypes about them being studious, unable to drive etc. are, sadly, pretty true for a lot of Asians.

Sure, there are a lot of sharp Asians and sure, a lot of people of all races are studious and/or unable to drive... but I see these characteristics regularly enough with Asians that the trend sticks out.

Certainly, stereotypes wouldn't exist if they didn't appear as often as they do.

... though I did find it funny when I learned that two foods my family liked to eat frequently while I was growing up, fried chicken and watermelon, are foods stereotypically associated with blacks.

by Gomez on Jul 10, 2007 11:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I agree
I'm part asian and I think asian jokes are hillarious. My Japanese grandmother drives like a maniac. My point was that I'm a little perturbed by the lack of P.C minded people jumping to the aid of asians. I can't remember what comedian said it, but you can make a joke about asians in public and nobody cares and everyone laughs, but any other demographic and at least one person objects to it. The comments directed at Ichiro, specifically those calling him overrated I think are partially racially motivated. If he were white, we would be inundated with hustle, grit, and scrappy references. The same of course can be said of blacks and latinos and I agree they have it far worse as far as the eye of the public. The asians just seem to be lost in the shuffle without an advocate's voice.

But, greatest day in a decade to be an M's fan!

by hcoguy on Jul 10, 2007 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Personally, I'm glad of it
Political correctness is, in my opinion, just a cover for people being prejudiced but not wanting to look it.

I'm half Chinese, half Irish/Scottish mongrel, and if people want to make fun of my heritage, more power to them, especially if it's funny.

by Graham MacAree on Jul 10, 2007 11:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I can agree with that
the inequity of people jumping to rebut Asian smack as compared to those who jump to rebut smack against blacks or natives.

I'm a generally insensitive bastard who grew up in a household where we gave as much smack as we took (some of it indeed racial) so I brush it off.

People who diss Ichiro just don't like that he's in Seattle and not NY or LA.  Maybe that's fueled by his being Asian.  Yeah, whatever.  It's probably the same group of people who didn't think he could hit in the bigs before 2001.  I'm sure he's deeply crestfallen ;P

I can't wait to bring this up to all the Cardinal fans I know, since I live in Misery, i mean Missouri.

OTOH, it is fucking hillarious that Michael Young didn't get into the game. He is probably my least favorite player in baseball, and was the reigning all-star MVP.

Even if Duncan's out-slugging Pujols, Pujols is still the best RH hitter in the NL.  Ya don't leave him on the bench in a losing effort.  HELLOOOOO!!!!

He's ailenated
Pujols, Edmonds, Rolen, is Carp next?

I've lost all the respect I've had for him because of the DUI combined with the bizarre roster decisions this year. now he's openly sparring with the above mentioned players.

I bet they let him play out this season, but I wouldn't mind if they fired him.

Meh
Putz would've gotten the save, but I don't blame Leyland for hitting the panic button.  Putz will be saving that aggression for the Detroit series.

Other than that, this day was damn near perfect.  Absolutely perfect.

by ThundaPC on Jul 10, 2007 11:27 PM PDT reply actions

agreed
and I think Leyland also made the move because of pitch count more than anything plus  He had a lot of  good options left (K-rod, Okajima).  It was probably half panic move, half pitch count.

According to Gammons
The AL dominates because Jeter has never lost an all-star game.

Glad he got that DP grounder in the first to set the tone for the rest of the night. It wasn't even hit hard, Ichiro beats that out as the hitter.

by hcoguy on Jul 11, 2007 12:19 AM PDT reply actions

Ya I saw that...
"Derek Jeter has never lost an all-star game."

Umm...maybe cause the AL has had more talent all those years?  Just throwing it out there.  CRAZY I KNOW!!!  :P

it is because Barry Bonds always plays for the National League.

So..
Anyone YouTube the MVP interview w/Ichiro?  I'm an idiot myself for not running out to my studio and recording it myself.  But it was friggin' hot outside and even hotter in my studio, and likely would've taken my old, overheated Windows video machine several hours to load the program...

I'd love to see Ichiro's reaction to Zelasko's last comment about him being a free agent.  I remember it, but I want to see if my memory is jaded by the blind über-fandom from the cloud-9'd-ness I was being fogged in from the earlier Ichiro news...
