AS Game

I didn't see this discussed anywhere else, so here goes:  Ichiro got named to his 7th AS game, and Putz got named to his first.  Wooooooooooooooo!

Notable AL snubs: Joe Mauer, Gary Sheffield, Kevin Youkilis, Jeremy Bonderman, Roy Halladay...

Anybody else?

Re: Snubs
You can only have so many All-Stars.

That, and they have to get at least one player from each team, so that means Gil Meche and Brian Roberts have to be picked.

You should feel lucky that the M's got their fair share of two AS's, with all the Eastern-centric BS that goes on in the sports world.

I mean, Manny, or Ortiz @ 1B? Christ. Youkilis has been better than both of them combined.

Not that I was complaining, mind you
It was just to start the conversation going.  Overall, I think the selections were pretty spot-on, with the exception of Ivan Rodriguez.

by Nadingo on Jul 1, 2007 7:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Rodriguez...
was a bit of a poor choice. But on that note, people are stupid. Case in point, look at all the RS, and all the Tigers. I would say three of those choices are pure popularity and stupidity.

Pudge...
has an argument as one of the top 5 catchers ever.

Seriously- pick 5 guys with better careers. It's not easy, because guys like Campanella had half the career AND years they hit .207/.285/.401.

He's pretty much going to the All-Star game until he retires, as long as he's healthy.

All Star
Shouldn't be a lifetime achievement vote. It should be a snapshot of who had the best 1st half, period. See M. Rivera or R. Clemens for other examples of that stupidity that could have happened. If Pudge gets in, why don't two washed up old guys that had stellar, multiple all-star appearance careers get in?

Honestly, I expected Rivera to get in, based on this stupidity, and was pleseantly surprised to find out he didn't.

Matsuzaka was a little bit of a snub I thought
considering that Meche made the team, but every team having a representative is a whole other issue that could be argued for/against all day...

by thenatural on Jul 1, 2007 7:29 PM PDT reply actions

It was discussed in the game thread at length
as it was of absolutely no surprise and I think most people think all-star selection is about three levels above a random lottery draw, it didn't get much more than that.

ESPN Snubs Meche
Paraphrase:

Leyland has a tough job, picking a starter, as every starter on that team is more than deserving, except Gil Meche.

AHAHAHAHA

Kenji should of been there instead of Ivan

The all-star rosters are dumb.
I have the same question for two teams in the NL:

"Why is your second baseman an all-star over your more deserving outfielder?"

(Namely, the Diamondbacks sending Orlando Hudson over Eric Byrnes, and the Pirates sending Freddy Sanchez over Jason Bay.  At least I sort of understand it in Arizona's case a bit more.  And I like Freddy and all.  BUT STILL WTF.)

by Deanna on Jul 2, 2007 1:09 AM PDT reply actions

best hitter
one of their SP should have gone.

Although you can make the case for Bay getting it if he's been snubbed in the past.

by Matthew on Jul 2, 2007 2:58 AM PDT up reply actions

I couldn't believe
the NL is taking 5 starters and 6 closers.  You swap out Brian Fuentes for Snell or Gorzelanny, then you don't have to take Freddy Sanchez and instead you can take another of the more than deserving shortstops (Hanley Ramirez, Edgar Renteria, Jimmy Rollins).

by patsfan on Jul 2, 2007 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was gonna say Snell
Gorzelanny, I like him too, but I think Snell is a better pitcher.

(I'd probly take Ramirez over Rollins, honestly, too)

BREAKING NEWS !!!!!
ESPN DECLARES THAT BONDS SUCKS

Barry Bonds, 2007: .302/.513/.599
His OPS (1.112) is best in the NL (P. Fielder at .997 is second) and a lone point behind A-Rod's for best in MLB.

by Matthew on Jul 2, 2007 1:15 AM PDT reply actions

Ummm didn't you get the memo
ESPN says we are supposed to hate Barry Bonds.

by Robert on Jul 2, 2007 1:17 AM PDT up reply actions

That's not
what Barry's personal bitch reporter Pedro Gomez said.

by Gomez on Jul 2, 2007 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Not only that...
But his OPS+ of 195 is on pace to be the highest for a 42 year old by 60 points... so by lackluster they mean the greatest offensive season by a man of his age by a wide margin.

by djhatesthtejews on Jul 2, 2007 3:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don't understand how there was an argument
about whether he should make it or not. He's having an amazing year and the Giants suck.
No, sir, they're saying Boo-vasi.

by Mariner John on Jul 2, 2007 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I want to see Bonds play
in San Francisco! I hope he plays 3 in the outfield and bats 1st in the lineup!!

by apalach007 on Jul 2, 2007 3:00 PM PDT reply actions

Bleh.
Much as I like to cheer for the Rakuten Golden Eagles as the underdogs of the Pacific League, it bugs me that their fans stuffed the ballots and got EIGHT of their guys elected to the all-star starting lineup.  I mean, some of them are valid (Fukumori, Yamasaki, Tanaka, maaaaybe Isobe) but cmon, Motohiro Shima?  A catcher batting .170?  You have to be KIDDING me.

by Deanna on Jul 2, 2007 4:22 PM PDT reply actions

Okay
THAT sort of ballot box stuffing is excessive.  Imagine if 8 Royals made the starting AL lineup.  Fans here would HOWL.

by Gomez on Jul 2, 2007 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

It must be mentioned
That MLB is doing voting for the final AL and NL spots.  My picks are Pat Neshek for the AL and Chris Young (the Staypuft #2 starter) for the NL.

by Gomez on Jul 2, 2007 4:27 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I've voted for Neshek too
I mean, come on, he posted on his blog to ask for it, which is just too cool, because Pat himself is just too cool.

Though in general I don't think there's a bad choice on either of those ballots -- all of those guys are good.

by Deanna on Jul 2, 2007 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I was impressed
Any one of those guys has a decent case for getting in.

The guys I mentioned were also the leading WPA guys among the choices listed, as of yesterday, but I like them both anyway.

by Gomez on Jul 2, 2007 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Is Griffey gonna play this year?
Or is he gonna pull a Manny or a Pedro?
Jeff Weaver 4 Cy Young
