How 'bout that Droob?

Asdrubal Cabrera as of 06/08/07:
180 ABs in AA
Switch Hitting defensive whiz at SS
.322/.406/.506
23 SO / 26 BB
16 SB / 6 HR
13 2b / 1 3B

I thought it a bad deal at the time but now it looks even worse. Admittedly, I really liked the Sexson deal at the time so my powers of precognition are perhaps proven to be perilously paltry, but...there it is. Next nail in the coffin for Bavasi? Point to Droob.

Shortstop.
Yuni's defense has left the country.

But it wasn't that way when A-Cab was traded.

Agreed.
Still, depth in the minors is pretty important.  I mean, just because Beltre is awesome, look what happens when we don't have the depth in the system.  You get guys like Bloomquist starting for a week or longer.  Leone For er wait...

And, actually, yes, I'd trade Yuni for Droobs straight up right now.

Not sure what is going on with Yuni...
I just hope the coaches don't freak out on him and they start yelling at him to fix this problem. Same thing goes for the press, because that won't help matters at all.

Botching routine throws is 100% percent mental. It's one of those terrible things that happens sometimes, maybe Yuni needs to get a day off for a mental break. Thats what I would do if I was the manager and I would be fairly confident that the problem would be solved before it became a big deal in the press. Unfortunately Hargrove hasn't demonstrated himself to be the kind of manager who sits players before poor play becomes an issue. By the time Yuni's creative throwing becomes an issue with the press, it may be too late to fix.

seriously?
you'd trade a 25 yr old SS with terrific range but poor accuracy this season (never really before) who's OPSing .768 in the AL for a 22 yr old SS with terrific range who's OPSing 908 in AA?

I find that ridiculous.

Patience is a virtue.
And, yes, I know, Droobs is probably 2 years away from the bigs.  Still, his defense is pretty amazing, and he's got tons better plate discipline.

I'm just fairly ticked at Yuni, so XD

Even though it would be ridiculous to do so,
say you did trade 'em straight up. Who would you have play SS? Morse? Also, remember Tui?

Straight up?!
They'd better throw in a pitcher.

Yeah I'd say its turning out to be a kinda
crappy deal.  At the time it didn't look too bad so I'm not going to blame Bavasi & Co too much.  I'd be a little surprised if his average stays as high as it is.  I think looking at his stats the only two things that really jump out at me are that he's cut his K/9 in half, increased his BABIP by about 20 pts, and a little increase in his ISO.  It will be interesting to see if he can sustain his AVG at all.  I'd expect him to maybe settle into about 290/360/450 which is still good.  The move to AA also looks like its helped him a fair amount so we'll be watching to see what happens when he hits AAA again.

At the time, it was not a bad deal
Broussard and Perez were productive bats for the Indians, and AsCab didn't really have a future here unless we planned on punting Lopez or Betancourt.  I still believe Broussard is a productive bat if you give him consistent playing time.

Also, AsCab is doing this in AA.  He is still, at best, a year or two away, and there's no guarantee he performs in AAA, let alone the bigs.

It was a terrible deal
You just don't give up 20 yo SS prospects with half decent plate discipline for aged platoon DH bats.  There's something to be said for making a move at the deadline to fill a need, and the Broussard deal was certainly better - he wasn't 50 years old, for a start.
But this whole 'he didn't have a future here' thing excuses waaay too much.  Should we trade Mangini as soon as we're legally able, because hey, we've got Beltre?  Should we trade Triunfel?

This isn't to say that you have to keep your minor leaguers at all cost.  But you've got to get something you really need - something valuable.  I've got no problem trading Moore or Clement or Tui or.. for a good pitching 'spect.  But I'd be a bit annoyed if we traded Wlad for Jesse freakin' Orosco or Mike Myers.

The other thing I'd point out is that at the time of the deal, Bavasi had ranked Oswaldo Navarro and Travis Chick equal to AsCab, a judgment that simply hasn't aged well.  As we approach another deadline, I just really want to see that Bavasi's gotten better at talent evaluation.
