Don't the Reds
have some player on their team who used to be a Mariner?

I think maybe
it was back when they played in the King Felix Dome, but I could be wrong.

It's not Schooler, is it?

Griffey, I think
That should be kind of interesting, seeing him at Safeco. Maybe the broadcasters will mention his return during the game at some point.

No, Hatteberg played for Oakland
They got that old, chubby RF slugger, though.  Fat Elvis Griffey or something.

Griffey on returning to Seattle:
"I haven't been back, not once," he said. "No desire. And why does everybody want me to talk about Seattle? What's the big deal? What am I going to do? I'm going to Scott Hatteberg's house."

Even Griffey wants people to settle the fuck down.

I've heard tell
that he doesn't want to say too much positive about Seattle for fear of irking everyone in Cincinnati. The guy wants to be liked by everyone... and while it's not the smartest thing in the world, I get the "need" for it because I do it too.

But you know what the greatest thing about Griffey is? He basically forced Woody Woodward's resignation. They brought in Gillick because Mr. Woodward didn't want to be "the man who traded Ken Griffey, Junior." At least, that's what I remember hearing some years ago.

Okay, maybe that's not the GREATEST thing, but if you really really wanted to stretch it, you could say that Griffey had a major influence in the Mariners run of 2000-2002 because of it... then again, you could keep that stretch going and blame Griffey for Gillick scorching the minor league system before Bavasi took over, which I suppose we're still feeling to some level today?

Mariner fans
want this to mean way much more than it actually does.

He doesn't want to come back.  There's no real place for him if he does come back, and he's so old and broken down that it wouldn't be a good baseball idea to bring him back.

All of this is almost a slap in the face to the existing ballclub.  "Hey, you're our team, that's nice, now STFU and step aside so we can give this guy who played for us 5-10 years ago a giant public blowjob, thx."

Cut the crap
Players come and players go, and what Griffey did a player here was great... but the past is over and we have a growing team in the present that's going to be great in the future.  Let's focus on the present instead of wishing it was 1995 again.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Also
Name another team that did something like this for a former player whenever he came into town.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not whenever.
This is the first time we have seen him since him he left.  Teams do do this all the time to celebrate things that happened in the past.  I mean, should we all just forget about it?  That's pretty damn depressing...

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

There's no need to go this far over the top
It's obnoxious how far the hype machine's going.  Even Griffey himself thinks it's ridiculous.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions

The hype is overdoing it
and so is the signing of "Griffey Returns" baseballs. But I don't think the pregame ceremony is overdoing it necessarily (depending on what happens in those 15 minutes. If they retire his number on the spot, it's probably too much, but I'd still go for it), and I don't think that the Mariners reminding people he's coming in their ads is too much, but I do think that FSN is crazynuts.

by tworsandtwols on Jun 22, 2007 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

This I agree with
I don't have a problem with advertising it and doing a ceremony.  But don't mention it EVERY SINGLE MOMENT.  I don't care THAT much.

It's the OVERKILL that's driving me up the wall.  Also, I think it's fueled in large part by people foolishly wanting him to come back, which is even dumber.

Let the fans give him a standing ovation.
That's what he should get, and that's what he deserves.

But a 15-minute pregame ceremony? Really?

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Why Not?
He was the best player in franchise history, and a big reason we still have a team.  I think to NOT do something before the game would be insulting to the fans.

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Insulting?!
I've been to enough games to say with some degree of certainty that if there was no ceremony before this game, I don't think the fans would think that much of it nor would it stop them from going nuts during Junior's ABs.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Been to plenty of games myself.
And I'm pretty sure that my friends and I would find it odd if they just started the game.  Maybe insulting is the wrong word, but how about just "let down"

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

It just seems over the top.
Who else does this? I mean, I don't recall Boston throwing a huge party when Pedro came back with the Mets.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Boston has a rich baseball history
Seattle does not.  I think that might have something to do with it.

by The Beer Baron on Jun 22, 2007 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.
I know it's been said enough times already, but there would be no Seattle Mariners without Ken Griffey, Jr. I don't think there is another city/team in MLB that has been affected so dramatically by one star.

by sammy on Jun 22, 2007 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not sure Pedro's a fair comparison.
I can't really think of one actually.

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

No, it's not.
Boston was Pedro's third team.  Boston never threatened to move to another city.  And Pedro hadn't been gone for 8 years.

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

The impact was different
but the meaning of each player to each city's fan base is, to me, roughly equivalent.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

No, it's not.
Boston had Williams, Yaz, and a rich history of baseball moments that's rivaled by few other sports teams. Sure, Pedro meant the world to Sox fans, but had he never come along, Fenway would still be a hallowed ballpark and Sox fans would have still had fanatical loyalty to the team.

Before Griffey in Seattle, there was no one. Steve Largent was the only other athlete who could begin to compare to what Griffey brought to the city. Every kid in my elementary school class wanted one and only one kind of candy: the Ken Griffey Jr. Chocolate Bar. This is not hyperbole.

Is there a comparable organization

Also, let's make this clear one more time: Griffey was one of Seattle greatest players, but you're inferring that Griffey singlehandedly kept baseball in Seattle, and that isn't even close to being true.

Pedro was probably more valuable to Boston
during his tenure there than Griffey was to Seattle. He put up what is arguably the most dominant 5 year period in the history of the game. Griffey was really good, but he wasn't far and away above his peers like Pedro was.

by Goose on Jun 22, 2007 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the problem is just the hype
When Olerud came back with the Yankees in 2004 after being DFAed, the announcer inadvertantly said "now batting, first baseman John Ooooooooolerud," and the entire stadium stood up for a two-minute spontaneous standing ovation before his first at-bat.  Nobody made a big deal about it before or after, but THAT seemed like a really poignant way for fans to let the guy know that he was really appreciated here.

I didn't live here in the 90's, but I've been to 15 Mariners games this year already and have had the Griffey stuff shoved at me every time I go in the stadium.  So in some ways, I think the hype over the series actually makes it less special, even if the fans show up en masse to cheer for him, just because it's almost like things can't possibly live up to expectations at this point.

by Deanna on Jun 22, 2007 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

It's less special because the fans are being
"told" to cheer. When it's spontaneous it's so much better.
"The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners."

by Thingray on Jun 22, 2007 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

There's no way the Griffey's return
to Seattle after nearly a decade was going to elicit a "spontaneous" response.

by sammy on Jun 22, 2007 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Then why should we have a huge
pre-game ceremony, if none of the fans feel all that strongly about it?
"The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners."

by Thingray on Jun 22, 2007 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not getting across.
I mean, there was no way in hell this thing was gonna pass us by without a hundred articles written about how the Mariner's Jesus has finally returned. I honestly think the ceremony reflects a lot of Seattle-ites' desire to show their appreciation.

by sammy on Jun 22, 2007 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

That makes sense.
I don't actually think it's horrible that they are doing this, I just don't think it's really necessary, and it feels "forced".

Plus I'm already sick of hearing about it. I'll be glad once the pomp and circumstance is done, and I just get to watch him play.

But to be honest, if we are up a run in the 9th, I'm still rooting for JJ to strike him out on three straight pitches.

Uh huh
Well, I live here, go to a lot of games, read and watch the local media each day, and most of the fanbase absolutely loves Griffey, loved him last year and the year before, and half of them want him back.  This fanbase gives Cammy an ovation every time he comes back.  So your assessment that they wouldn't spontaneously cheer Griffey's return is probably wrong.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

uh.

by sammy on Jun 22, 2007 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions

The articles are fine.
The fans getting excited are fine.  Advertising the series on TV and everywhere is totally fine.  But to say a ceremony was thus absolutely necessary?  Uh, not really.  Nothing will fall apart if there's no pregame ceremony for Junior.

To ignore Jose Lopez's at bats because FSN's telling Dave Sims over his headset to talk about Griffey moments?  Also not fine.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh,
I don't think I'd ever said the ceremony was "absolutely necessary." Just that I understood where it, and all the media love/hype is coming from. The response/hype/celebration all jives with my own emotional response to seeing Griffey back in Seattle.

I mean, what would like to see, a button give-away?  How many first ballot hall of famers did the M's have?  And if Griffey can't let himself really appreciate it yet, that's ok, because this also for the fans.

Among other guys who would be eligible
and given his marvelous seasons, plus his past history with NPB, I'd say he's an easy in.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I just wonder sometimes,
because he doesn't have the "magic numbers" (3,000 hits, etc..    Yet.) in MLB itself that so many people look at.
"The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners."

by Thingray on Jun 22, 2007 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions

There are a lot of guys in the hall
who don't have those numbers.  I think the magic numbers come into play when a guy's a moer borderline case, i.e. there aren't really any standout career accomplishments other than a bunch of great seasons.

Ichiro walked in the door, with a lot of pressure being the 1st Japanese position player in MLB, and hit .350, got 200 hits a year every year, then set the hits record, then continued getting hits.  If you wanted to judge him independent of his NPB career and trailblazer status, then yeah, his case is doubtful.  But considering he opened the floodgates for Matsui, Iguchi and other position players from NPB, as well as his big hitting seasons, then yeah, I'd say he's an easy in even if he stopped playing today.

But no one has had a bigger impact on baseball in Seattle than Jr.  I just think a lot of people are pretty excited for this, and I don't get the backlash.  If I had a ticket, I'd sure as hell want to get there early tonight.

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

is not with Junior, it's with the incessant hype from the media, from FSN, from the org itself.

Most of the backlash here
is against FSN for driving it down our throats. I think the celebration is unnecessary, but I don't have a big problem with it in and of itself. I'm just beyond sick of hearing about it, and can't wait for it to be over.

You know, I was 9/10 in '95
so my memory isn't that great of the time, but from what I remember, it specifically wasn't Griffey's play that made the '95 season. In fact, it seemed like it was Griffey's injury that sort of provided the catalyst for waking them up so to speak.

What I remember from '95 was the team, as a whole, playing well. The whole "different hero each night" sort of thing. It was just as much about Randy, Tino, Edgar, Buhner and others.

Griffey was the face of the team, no doubt, but don't forget he was absent for half the '95 season and the half he did play was poor to his standards.

by Thingray on Jun 22, 2007 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Bah.
I think a lot of us who spent our formative years watching Junior play for the M's view him in the same light as our parents and grandparents viewed Mantle and Mays.  Junior was the only thing this city had going for it in the late 80's/early90's, sports-wise.  This ceremony isn't logical but you're talking about sports fans here, right?  Jeff routinely destroys his furniture when things go bad during an M's game.  That's not logical either but we all kind of know how he feels.  So leave us to our sentimentality for the weekend, dammit.

FSN sucks, yes.  Always has.  Don't turn their suckiness into a vendetta against those who are looking forward to welcoming Griffey back to Seattle.

by ryanhealy on Jun 22, 2007 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions

A vendetta?
Now you're being ridiculous.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, that's kind of how it feels.

FWIW, I can't remember the last time I disagreed with your perspective (except for maybe the ridiculous vegan mac n' cheese thread on Metblogs).

I may have to change the tagline on my posts!
"The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners."

by Thingray on Jun 22, 2007 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder if there's just a disconnect here
I've been following the M's since 1992, but I never lived in Seattle, and only started being able to visually watch them every day in 2004. I know Gomez hasn't been a Mariner fan for that long. A lot of people here didn't have a chance to get the full Griffey experience. And we're disagreeing with the people who did. That seems to be the heart of it.

If that's the case, then I apologize.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I've been a fan for a long while
I haven't lived here that long, but I've been a Mariner fan since the early 90's.  I still have an old Griffey autograph stashed somewhere and was a huge fan of the guy.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

My bad.
But still, I wonder if you had to live in/around Seattle to really grasp what Griffey meant. If so, then it's just something I'll unfortunately never be able to understand.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I started watching the M's in 94, so I had the
full Griffey experience for years. I loved the guy and still do. But that still doesn't change the fact that the media hype is insane.

"The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners."

by Thingray on Jun 22, 2007 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll agree with that,
if it stops the bickering. Like I said, I grew up watching the M's. They were my first sports team in any sport and that had EVERYTHING to do with Junior.  For a little boy growing up in Seattle, he was the only reason to watch baseball in the early 90's. That makes me irrational when it comes to Griffey, but, apparently, I'm far from the only one.

by sammy on Jun 22, 2007 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Sure...
I bet that has something to do with it.  For the first 13 years of the M's existence it was mediocre player after losing season, ad nauseum.  When he arrived, for whatever reason, he captured everybody's imagination and got non-M's fans, even non-baseball fans, to pay attention.  My mom, for instance, had never intentionally watched a baseball game until the hype swirling around Griffey became impossible to ignore.  Watching him play (and watching me so excited about him) turned her into a baseball fan and to this day she watches every game she can.  It's stuff like that that makes me sentimental about Griffey.  There are just a ton of really good memories I have where he either played a central role or was on the periphery in some way.

by ryanhealy on Jun 22, 2007 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely
I think you had to experience the difference between going to a game in 1988 (or before then) and going to a game in 1989 to fully appreciate the impact that Griffey had on the franchise.  The pre-Griffey M's were about as popular as the Seattle Storm are now.

by G_ on Jun 22, 2007 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Disconnect
There will be a disconnect between those of you who are relatively new fans or didn't grow up in Seattle and those of us who have been watching the M's for over 20 years in the Seattle area.

1995 was the result of other players becoming a solid surrounding cast around Griffey. Griffey was exciting before Edgar, Buhner, Randy, Tino or Alex ever were. Ken Griffey Jr. was probably the first player in franchise history who offered the promise of making the playoffs if we could put a decent team around him. Even before the M's were good, Griffey provided a reason to watch the games.

Yes, FSN has hyped this thing like crazy. It just don't care because Ken Griffey Jr. has meant more to me than any other player in franchise history.

by etowncoug on Jun 22, 2007 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

My opinion has officially been swayed.
...of course, MLB.tv probably won't cover the ceremony anyway, sooooooo...

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, okay
I'm not about to give him full credit for Safeco Field, however.

I realize another item of disconnect: a lot of readers here haven't read Art Thiel's book "Out of Left Field," which gives a comprehensive look at Mariners history and coverage of the whole drama behind the possible move and who was responsible for eventually keeping the Mariners in Seattle and building Safeco Field.

I think everyone here who hasn't read it should go read it.  A lot of people believe Griffey and 1995 directly led to Safeco Field... and while a factor, it wasn't nearly the driving force behind saving the Mariners.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Didn't know about that book,
though Art Thiel? Really? The thought of reading a whole book by that man makes me want to throw up.

In any case, Griffey helping to save baseball in Seattle is only a very small piece of my fondness for the man. There's no way I'd be close to the baseball fan (or sports fan in general) I am today without Junior.

by sammy on Jun 22, 2007 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

whoops, not Art Thiel.

first, the Giants are in the same league so they see him all the time, and second, sometimes I feel like half the decent players in the game today used to be on the Pirates when I was in college.

Seriously, go look at some of those mid-90's Pirates rosters and you'll be shocked by some of the guys you never knew played there (like, for example, some young hotshot named Jose Guillen... and when I was in college our top pitchers were Loaiza, Lieber, and Schmidt... and hey, that Arroyo kid who's pitching on Sunday started out there too)

Just a thought
This could be totally wrong and even if it did have something to do with it it's probably only part of the reason but...

Everybody's seen the mixed reactions when A-Rod and Randy returned(not so mixed in A-Rod's case).  Griffey himself said he was worried about getting booed because of this.  I wonder if all the hype and ceremony is to make it basically impossible for anyone to boo him.  Also, by having a ceremony and reminding everyone what he meant to the team, hopefully they won't boo him.

I don't think all of this is necessary and I don't think Junior wants it, but I think he deserves this more than being booed.

by Fuckmikereilly on Jun 22, 2007 4:13 PM PDT reply actions

Given public sentiment
which before all this was WAY more positive for Griffey than it was for Unit and A-Rod (one need only look at the countless letteyrs and such to the org asking about trading to get Griffey back), I don't think Griffey ever had anything to worry about.  I mean, does Mike Cameron ever get booed?

Your theory makes sense... and I don't believe it was necessary.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

About the Griffey hype
It's a Friday game, primetime television, with a beloved hero returning for the first time in 7 years.

FSN may be overdoing it, but they're just selling a product.  It may be annoying, but they're just doing what they do.  It's not all the time that you get a "story" like this handed to you.  You gotta milk it for all it's worth.  I think they're also hoping on some national attention for this.

As bad as the overhype has been, the overreacting backlash is just as ridiculous.  Get over it, guys.  It's one night, it's one pregame ceremony, people will laugh and cry and it'll be over with and we wont have to deal with it.

"Regression" is fat people speak for "don't touch my fucking cake, asshole."

This isn't trolling.
Here's what I think it comes down to:
  1. Lots of people love Griffey
  2. Many think that a pregame ceremony is a bit too much
  3. Many disagree, and are feeling pretty emotional about the return of a hero
It seems silly for #2 to criticize #3, since #2 couldn't really care either way, and #3 has obviously been looking forward to this for a while. If people want to make a big deal out of Griffey's return, that's awesome, and I hope everyone enjoys it.

Normally
I would agree with the skepticism.... but I can't really see why you would DL him for 15-days when he could probably be valuable in long relief with the propensity for this team to have its starters bomb early.

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 22, 2007 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Not sure.
Maybe Baek just has an aversion to pitching out of the bullpen. But reading all the quotes from Hargrove and the like after the Feierabend switch, I didn't see any indication at all that Baek was hurt.

My best guess is that they don't need him in the bullpen with Green coming back (from a family emergency), but they want him to keep getting an ML paycheck while they sort a few other roster issues out. It's not like he won't be throwing during his 15 days; he just won't be doing it in games.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Why not just
send him back down to Tacoma where he can continue pitching competitively and working on ironing things out against actual hitters.  Plus, if someone does get seriously hurt and an immediate starter replacement is needed there is no one left on the 40-man to come up... sending him down would allow him to come back up right away in that scenario.

Seems risky to DL him for no reason guarantee'ing you can't use him for 15 days.... with Weaver and Ramirez I can understand it a bit, since they both started with the club, Weaver couldn't be optioned, and Ramirez was one of Bavasi's big off-season acquisitions.  Baek started at Tacoma so I don't see where it'd be a big deal to just send him down there again until he's needed again.

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 22, 2007 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

DL stint's retroactive to June 17th
and the Mariners have a day off next week, so they can reshuffle their rotation in the event of an injury if they need to.

I think it really is just a money thing. In AAA, Baek doesn't get very much. On the DL, he keeps getting a big league paycheck. It's one of those little ways that Bavasi keeps his players happy.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought
that once you were on the 40-man roster that you made at least the major league minimum because that's how team salary is calculated....

by MfaninAlaska on Jun 22, 2007 5:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think that's how it works.
I think guys on the 40-man have a way lower minimum than guys on the 25-man. But I've been wrong before.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

40 man salary rules.
And those like Baek who ended up on the DL.

Minor leaguers on the 40 man roster for at least 1 year and are into their 2nd year or who have had at least 1 day of major league service is 54,500 (2006).

Major league min is 327,000 (2006).

So, yes, Bavasi is doing Baek a huge favor.

To Follow Up
On a point Jeff made way up in the thread (without it being lost in the clutter): I think it's hard for people who didn't live in Seattle during the Griffey years to understand what he meant, especially to people like me who grew up with him.  I moved to Seattle in 1989, which means that until he was traded in 2000, Mariners baseball meant Ken Griffey Jr.  WHile of course it's not true that he was solely responsible for Safeco and the team staying in Seattle, it's also wrong to diminish what he meant to the franchise, and most of all to the fanbase.

Think of it this way: those of us who lived through the 2001 season will always cherish it in a way that might be hard to explain to a future group of M's fans who see a ridiculously lucky team that choked in the regular season.  In 2026, when they celebrate the 25th anniversary of that team, I'm sure we'll have a bunch of posts about how the ceremony before the game is ridiculously overwrought for a team that didn't even reach the World Series, but that won't change the way we feel about it.

Sure, the promotion for the ceremony has been a bit excessive, but it's only that way because so many people feel so strongly about Griffey.  For those of you who don't, I can only say that the series will be over in less than 48 hours.

I agree
Griffey had a part in putting Seattle on the map.  He wasnt the only one though.  It just pisses me off when I hear people say that he was the ONLY reason Seattle still has a team.  Complete bullshit.  I think most true Mariner fans realize that so...
Its like the luck of the Irish, only Im not Irish so you figure it out.

by RED29 on Jun 22, 2007 5:26 PM PDT up reply actions

But Jr. was the biggest part, dontcha think?
I just think if not for Griffey, we probably don't have a team.  But yes, it took many others as well.  But he was the centerpiece.  No Griffey probably means no team today.

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

He was a piece
but only a piece.  Others had important roles as well.  Keeping the Mariners in Seattle was a huge team effort.

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed
As an example, Randy's 18-2 record was as instrumental to '95 as anything Griffey did on the field. However, I would say that Griffey was a household name across the country and had the attention of the media in a way that no other Mariner did. In an on-the-field sense he was a part of a team with a bunch of high quality players (Randy, Gar, Tino, Buhner, etc.), but in terms of being the face of the franchise locally and nationally he was a step above all of his teammates.

And I say all that as a lifetime Northwesterner and having lived in Seattle and gone to games since '91.

by stu hamm on Jun 22, 2007 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I mentioned it above
but anyone who hasn't read Art Thiel's "Out of Left Field" really needs to read it.  He covers the entire Mariners saga between the attempts to move them and the building of Safeco Field.

You'd be surprised how relatively small of a role the team itself and the fans play.

Yep
My dad started taking me to games in '87 and so I too grew up with him.  I know he forced the M's to trade him.  I know he was a huge prima donna.  But I love the guy.  Can't help it.  My favorite player of all time and always will be.

by Zack on Jun 22, 2007 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

ditto on that exactly...
'87 was my first game... I was only 2, but I grew up with Griffey as a hero, of course I loved Randy, Edgar, and Buhner(although I never shaved my head for a ticket), but Griffey was my baseball God.  Even though I moved away in '93, I never stopped beingan M's fan, and a Griffey fan.
When he fucked us, karma came back and bit him in the ass. For that reason, I've forgiven him, and am looking forward to the return.  My sister recently moved back to work for Boeing and is going to the game tonight, and I am jealous as you can possibly imagine.
So, for me, personally, I am excited about the return of the guy I absolutely idolized as a little kid.

Griffey's return
Long time lurker finally compelled to step out of the shadows because of the return of one of the greatest icons in Seattle sports history.

Griffey had a hand in saving baseball in Seattle, that is true, but for me personally, seeing the Kid smiling underneath that human pile after an improbable comeback really solidified baseball as my favorite sport.  Heck, it really solidified me as a sports junkie for life, period.  There have been awesome sports moments beyond that, of course, and I had tepidly waded into the sports scene beforehand, but without that moment I'm not sure I would have ever become the diehard M's fan that I am today.

I'm positive I'm not the only person for whom that event left a lasting impression on.

The pre-game ceremony isn't for Griffey, it's for all of us who's sports lives were shaped in some way by what he accomplished here in the great city of Seattle.

I'm just not sure that you can find a similiar situation where a player who meant so much to a franchise returns after so long...and the way he left doesn't cancel out what he did while he was in a Mariner uniform.

His OPS+ this year thus far?  141.

His OPS vs. Lefties thus far? .931
His OPS vs. Righties thus far? .960

Yeah.  He'd help.  Jettison Guillen, give Griffey LF, stick Jones in RF, Raul as DH, and Vidro on the bench.

Imagine that lineup.  Even with Griffey's sucky defense in left (would he be much worse, defensively, in LF than Raul???).

I'd do it in a heartbeat.  And even w/this rotation, the Angels would have good reason to be afraid.

Silly wishful thinking, but
maybe the M's brass will be so taken aback by Griffey's reception this weekend, that they'll seriously consider making a move for him.

Vidro (in order to even out the salary exchanged by the two teams) + a couple non-Jones prospects of the Reds' choice.

Maybe I wouldn't do that trade three weeks ago, or three weeks from now. But right now, I'm making that deal.

Griffey and Randy didn't want to be here any more, for whatever reasons.  That was obvious.

If they do it next time Griffey bats, however...

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

you can't be surprised
There's a lot fewer fans at "normal" games.

Therefore, it's safe to assume that most of the crowd tonight cares more about Griffey than they do the Mariners.

That doesn't make their booing acceptable, but you can kind of see why they're doing it. They're not Mariner fans.

You suck, Ibanez.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 11:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Simply Incredible Game Thread.
I don't know how to explain how strange it is to look through these posts, and see intelligent people claiming to understand why tonight was important to Seattle, only to read later posts of "Bean Griffey" and "The only good part is Griffey sucked".  I'm just at a loss.
Like you said Jeff, there really does seem to be a disconnect between pre and post-Griffey era fans, and to some extent, pre and post-95 M's fans.  But to hear these so called "fans" on this thread calling out the M's fan at Safeco today as bad fans?  Well, I just don't know how anyone could respond to that irony.

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 11:02 PM PDT reply actions

This is a pretty important point:
Things said during game threads should not be taken outside of game thread context. Today's contest absolutely, positively sucked in every single way. Many people (myself clearly being one of them) were extremely frustrated and just saying angry things. That's what happens during shitty games. It's meaningless venting.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Totally get that Jeff.
But it still sounds like more than that, and I'm not gonna waste everyone's time again preaching about it, so don't worry.  I guess I'm just sad that it wasn't, i guess, happier.

booing feirebend immensely just for keeping the runner close at first was beyond rediculous.

by Eldukey on Jun 22, 2007 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, that's pretty lame.
But one thing you have to think about is that M's fans are not Yankees/Sox/Dodgers fans.  We've had exactly one transcendent player in our short history.  The crazy loyalty I would think might be a bit better understood in this case.

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions

still..
I could understand them booing if they did something like, bean griffey, intentionally walk griffey, etc. etc.  But we have a rookie pitcher up there, thrust into an incredibly awkward situation, and they boo the hell out of him just for keeping the runner close, who i'll add is a high threat to steal.  I don't care that they cheered when griffey got a base hit, if i was at the game i'd be cheering too, but booing feirebend was appalling.  He didn't deserve that.

Maybe Griffey cared about coming back, maybe not. All I know is I saw a lot of people at the ballpark wearing their emotions on their sleeves and it was pretty cool to see.

It is fun to take a ride on the Wayback Machine for 1 night, and celebrate a great player in Mariner history. It was fun, that's all I really care about. It may have been one of those things where you just had to be at the ballpark shrug

it just came when everyone else had no reason to make noise.  And there were a lot of vocal Reds fans wearing Big Red Machine throwbacks -- remember this was the Reds' first visit to Seattle, and all the displaced Reds fan have been waiting a long time for this game too.

by G_ on Jun 22, 2007 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I watched at the bar
Train wreck.

I stand by my point that our fans booing our pitching is still sick and pathetic.

I guess it didn't matter eventually... but how can one condone that?  I can understand Jeff Weaver getting booed my the home crowd for sucking, but Feierabend for doing his job and holding the runner close like he's supposed to?

Not called for in any circumstances.

As for Griffey, he got on base, so good for him.  And ryanb, please shut up and go away if you can't discuss anything other than your anger that everyone doesn't share your wild man-love for Junior.

Okay, that was funny.
But anyway, I have absolutely no interest in seeing this get heated again. Griffey had his ceremony. It was nice. People enjoyed it. Now we get to talk about losing by fifteen runs to the worst team in baseball.

I was at the game, and the pregame was great
Not a dry eye in the house.

I really don't care what anyone here thinks about it. It was very touching, and very appropriate.

This was one of the greatest moments in Seattle sports history, as well it should be.

I didn't even mind the 15 run blowout, for just 1 night.

by TheMarinator on Jun 22, 2007 11:13 PM PDT reply actions

White boy?
Yeah, I was booing the living shit out of Feirabend. I called him every name in the book, right up until they pulled his lame ass.

So was everyone around me. He was absolutely awful. I didn't want to see him go past the 1st inning.

by TheMarinator on Jun 22, 2007 11:18 PM PDT up reply actions

In all fairness
while Feierabend was absolutely awful in the 2nd and 3rd, that 1st inning was mostly bad umpiring and worse Raul.

by Jeff Sullivan on Jun 22, 2007 11:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I cussed Raul too
and the umps, and Ryan F. Then I think after the 3rd beer and the home run given upto their .198 hitting catcher, I started laughing. I didn't stop until the game ended. My friend kept looking at me like I was crazy.

It was just so horribly one sided I found it really comical. Especially after they pulled Griffey and some Reds fans in front of me got extremely pissed off. They went absolutely balistik, and stormed out of their seats. Like 10 of them. I don't know if I've ever laughed so hard in my life.

by TheMarinator on Jun 22, 2007 11:27 PM PDT up reply actions

This is one of what?
The Kid forced a trade. More than any other athlete in Seattle sports history he turned his back on us. He may have but Seattle baseball on the map but he had no intention of staying here. In no way should this be ever be mentioned in the same breath as Game 5, the NFC championship game or the 79 NBA Finals.

by Robert on Jun 22, 2007 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions

It's hard to explain
Some of it defies conventional thinking really. It's hard to explain with complete rationality. Honestly Griffey was the person that drew me into the entire Seattle sports scene in the early 90's. The Mariners were my first love as far as sports teams go. Then came the Sonics, and the Seahawks. I think many people in Seattle have the same level of attachment with the guy.

What he did to force the trade is largely forgotten. I really have a hard time caring about it myself.

by TheMarinator on Jun 22, 2007 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions

If you
don't appreciate what Griffey did for the organization, and don't think he deserved what he got, I would question how long you have been following the club. The current players haven't done shit for the organization, except for turning out a few embarrassing years. Maybe current team wasn't so bad, the fans wouldn't have to hold on to the past.

by seahawk24 on Jun 22, 2007 11:14 PM PDT reply actions

I started following in 98
Ichiro has done plenty of shit lately. Griffey was the only player to ever force his way out of town and as long as the short right field porch continues to shit all over our free agent acquisitions I will consider it a personal "fuck you" from Ken himself.

by Robert on Jun 22, 2007 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions

you started in 98?
You really could have just stopped your thought right there.

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I moved from New York in 97
I stopped rooting for the Yankees in the middle of their greatest season to follow a last place baseball team. I consider my self both a diehard Seattle fan and a baseball historian. I know exactly what Griffey meant for Seattle. I was all for the Standing O, thought the pre game festivities were a little over the top but whatever, its the when the fans started caring more about a player that fucked this team 5 ways to Sunday then the people currently wearing the uniform that really made me angry.

by Robert on Jun 22, 2007 11:41 PM PDT up reply actions

You are just making my point.
If you were not here for the 80's M's, you don't know.  Even if you studied baseball history, you can't understand how different it felt to be an M's fan post 1989.  You just can't.
And Griffey didn't fuck the M's, he put them on the map.  To put it in NY terms, he was our Ruth.  And that's really not as crazy as it sounds if you were here.

by ryanb on Jun 22, 2007 11:48 PM PDT up reply actions

See, how is this productive?
How does putting other fans down make anything right?

by Gomez on Jun 22, 2007 11:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Griffey would have been the M's Ruth
had he stayed. The trade before 2000 sucked like hell. I have strangely forgiven him for it, probably due to some combination of Mariners' immediate success following his dpearture, Mike Cameron's robbing of Derek Jeter, and the number of injuries he's had since. Or perhaps that letting him go allowed the M's to go get a bullpen, which they desperately needed when he was here.

But at this point, I mostly feel that A-Rod has served his penance. He has not earned my applause nor my ASG votes, due to my M's fandom and irrational hatred of NYY, but his penance, I feel, has been completed.

I just hated Cirillo because he freaking sucked.
And his first year in Seattle was when I learned about sabermetrics and the value of OBP vs BA. So Cirillo for me was the first example of "Holy shit, not only does this guy suck the old fashion way, but he sucks with the new way as well!"

And then of course next year, he was even worse.

True, but that's mostly because of injury.
Griffey was never the fastest man in baseball like Ichiro has been, but he was never Vidro or Edgar with the legs. At least, not until all the injuries.

And you argued the point with whoever disagreed with you.

It's a point you can't necessarily even prove, because it's steeped heavily in subjective opinion.

So no, you never intended this to be an innocent, amicable discussion, because if you did, you would've made your point, heard the contrary, and once you saw the impasse, would've said, "Okay," and let it go.

I just know that when someone starts insulting me and then says "just let it go" that's kinda lame.  But since you can't see the debate in all of this, I'm tired of trying to have a civil conversation with you. You have some really good points, and it sucks that you are not more open to other's.

Just one final thought...
Isn't "letting it go" a two-way street?  I mean, I make some comments, and then I get just slammed by you, but I'm supposed to then just let it go?  I guess the point is that we disagree, and we can both let it go, but that probably won't happen if you keep resorting to insulting retorts and ultimatums.  Had you said, "hey ryanb, lets put it to bed" fine.  But what would you do if you were being slammed?

I really never saw this coming.  Gomez, can we just agree to never discuss Griffey again?  One thing this night has taught me is that this is a very polorizing topic, and it's hard to stay civil when you are emotional, like I think we both are right now.

by ryanb on Jun 23, 2007 12:43 AM PDT up reply actions

As invigorating as all this is
is it really necessary?

Ryan loves Griffey and enjoyed the ceremony.

Gomez thought the ceremony was too much, and didn't like how it was being forced down his throat.

by Gomez on Jun 23, 2007 12:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Anyway...
For what it's worth, I suffer no delusions regarding Griffey.  I don't believe for a second he saved baseball in Seattle.  That claim isn't even hyperbole, it's just false.

However, at the risk of repeating myself, I grew up w/ Griffey and have a million great memories where he's either a central figure or at least on the periphery. Now that I'm an adult, I have a hard time getting worked up over pro athletes.  But Griffey is a direct link to my childhood. Getting to cheer for him again tonight reconnected me to that a little bit. It was unexpectedly moving, actually.

I don't expect you to agree or feel the same way.  But because it doesn't take much imagination or intellectual prowess, I expect that you would understand.

Also, I read Slog all the time.  I kind of have to.  But I do my best not to project the patented "Slog shrill" so I don't comment very often.  Tonight was the exception -- the Fat Elvis comment bothered me.  Seemed...well, shrill.

When Davis was going to face Griffey for the
3rd time, after giving up six, I was so mad I sarcastically tried to get a "JA-SON DA-VIS" chant going.  People gave me weird looks.  I also chanted "AD-AM JON-ES" whenever Raul sucked.  My dad got mad at me for that.

I'll admit I was happy to see Griffey.  He was my first hero, and as long as we win the next two games, I want to see him hit a home run.  Feierabend got squeezed, but dumbass Mariner fans booed him after he started giving up more runs.  Hopefully the Mariners coaches realize Feier didn't really suck, but rather got really unlucky due to Umpires.

There was this obnoxious Cincy fan behind me.  She kept cheering on Cincy and tapping me on the shoulder saying "Aww, ya doing okay?" when Cincy scored and I was clearly angry.  So I just yelled at no one in particular "Strike out these inbred redneck Cincinnati assholes!  What a shitty city."

She didn't deny it, and kept on going.  Until some guy told her to shut the fuck up, and that she wasn't a good fan, she was just obnoxious.  My dad, being a polite Seattle fan, got in the other guy's face.  I can't believe my dad did that.  If this were a passionate baseball town, someone would've dumped a beer on that dumb bitch.  But once she was told to shut the fuck up, we were able to give each other shit without getting mad at each other again.  God, Seattle fans, including my dad, are retarded.

For Ken Griffey Jr., it was Christmas.

that I'm not sure I buy that he meant it quite like that then, in the same way that I doubt he totally meant Seattle was "home" like he sounded like he said today.

The guy's an entertainer, and he can work a crowd. Not only that, but what the hell else are you gonna say when you're with 40,000+ screaming fans who adore the living crap out of you?

All that said, I still enjoy him, and I wouldn't mind having him back if it made good baseball sense.

Fan reaction to the deal
Turns out Griffey was right. It wasn't about money. Turns out it wasn't about loyalty either!

-- Ross Green, Ellensburg

The Mariners brass says they have emotional ties to Griffey. They call him courageous. Gentleman, don't you realize that Griffey has just kicked sand in your face?

-- Roger Gregorich, Kirkland

How could the Mariners trade Griffey for two mediocre players, one nice prospect and a less than so-so prospect? The two first-round picks we would have got could easily turn out as good. This shows very poorly on our area, and says that if you act unreasonably like Bowden did then you get your way. I can't say how upset I am with Howard Lincoln (aka Mr. Double Speak), and lesser so with Pat Gillick (seems like he was forced into it).

Forget the Mariners, and forget Safeco -- I've had it.
