6/20: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 7:05pm PDT

Bautista 3B Ichiro CF McLouth CF Lopez 2B Sanchez 2B IbaƱez LF LaRoche 1B Guillen RF Bay LF Johjima C Nady DH Beltre 3B Doumit RF Sexson 1B Paulino C Vidro DH Wilson SS Betancourt SS ---------- ----------

Maholm (3-9, 5.00)          Weaver (0-6, 10.97)

When a game thread goes up this early and it's not Opening Day, it can only mean one thing: I've got better things to do than sit around and wait to post it later this afternoon. Like, say, take a tour of the Stone Brewery. I don't know if I'll be back in time for the game or not, but with Weaver on the mound, either way I'm going to bed drunk.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

What if Weaver pitched
a 81-pitch perfect game? That'd be hilarious.

Hmm...I like Batista and all.
http://www.thenewstribune.com/sports/mariners/story/91531.html

"The Yankees lose seven in a row and nobody thought it was the end of an era," Mariners staring pitcher Miguel Batista said. "We lose six in a row and everybody's ready to write us off."

Batista doesn't seem to realize what team he is playing for.

Wow, ESPN is amazing
They just ran through a list of free-agent pitchers who haven't or currently aren't pitching due to injuries and the combined total that those pitchers are making....and somehow made the leap to say that the Roger Clemens deal was a bargain simply because he made two quality starts.

I better turn away before I kill off any more brain cells.

by ThundaPC on Jun 20, 2007 12:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He is one their prize hype objects
like LeBron and Barry Bonds.  They are going to hype Clemens to death and then hype his corpse every chance they get.  They will act like he shits gold and pisses fairy water.

Is it possible to fully recover?
Im not sure how the Kidney Stone works, but if it comes out ... there ... wouldnt it rip ... that ... or make you bleed badly or ... stuff ...

Just curious.

by Slica on Jun 20, 2007 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

and what about the mental side
do you flinch ever time to you go pee?

by Matthew on Jun 20, 2007 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

When you're fighting a kidney stone,
you're in so much pain, there's no chance to flinch. You already constantly writhing around in pain.
"The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners."

by Thingray on Jun 21, 2007 12:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, it's entirely normal to fully recover.
Although it hurts like hell when it's happening, it doesn't rip, tear, or bleed badly...   In fact, you only usually know it happened because the pain begins to subside.
"The Dude. Takin' 'er easy for all us sinners."

by Thingray on Jun 21, 2007 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
Nothing really rips, though there is some blood in your urine for a bit.  The thing is that it's blocking passage in some very tiny, but important tubes, which then causes quite a bit of pain and sickness.

John (I Think You Mean) Thomson available
One of the guys who got a ton of positive reaction this off-season is available again -- and probably at basement prices. Tons of borderline pitchers becoming available: Roberto Hernandez (close to a ton all by himself), J.C. Romero, Mike Schultz, Erasmo Ramirez, .... Hope the M's don't go shopping in the trash heap.

On the other hand, a guy who might be available in the next week or so is Jason Stanford. He is now out of options and the Indians are going to have to decide whether to keep him up or try to pass him through waivers. He's a pretty good pitcher looking for a place to play.

by kva15 on Jun 20, 2007 1:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Indeed
Teams are starting to figure out what arms they have in the minors, are giving them chances, and crappy pitchers are getting dumped.

I'm going to the game tonight
With an old friend.  I'm hoping it's a good game, or at least there's a lot of action since he's not usually much of a baseball fan.  I think I have good odds for action at least.

by Bender on Jun 20, 2007 2:44 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

There should be.
Weaver and Maholm are not exactly great pitchers.

I'll be at the game too, but cheering for the Pirates again.  I honestly have no clue who's going to win, but I'd bet it'll be a high-scoring game one way or the other.

In other news, it seems the Zambrano fight did
end up getting somebody traded. Except it was Barrett, not Zambrano. He was traded to the Padres for Rob Bowen and Kyler Burke.

Yikes. Horrible trade by the Cubs.

Yeah, looks like a total GTFO trade.  Time for the Cubs to do their 2005-Mariners style powercycle to see who their catcher of the future's gonna be.  Here's a clue: it's probably not gonna be Rob Bowen.

Weaver pitching well in his last two starts
Did it have anything to do with the fact that they were against NL lineups?

Will the announcers completly ignore that?

Yes i realize that the Pirates are an NL team but they're playing AL rules baseball?

Weaver's luck runs out tonight.(Please make me eat my words Weaver please)

Not sure if this was mentioned
but KJR reports that there is a lineup shakeup with Lopez batting 2nd and Vidro batting 8th.

Two more slots down and he'll be in the right place.

What is the record for errors in a season?
Betancourt is on pace for, what, 60?

by Bender on Jun 20, 2007 5:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Kinda found an answer:
Bill Shindle, who played shortstop for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1890, holds the all-time record for most errors in a season, with 115 errors in 130 games.

Since 1900, only one player has made more than 90 errors in a season. Charles Hickman made 91 errors in 118 games at third base for the New York Giants in 1900.

Ouch.

I've figured it out
Ichiro was actually the proto-type of a new line of robotic baseball players. It took a while to convince the factory that you couldn't just field 9 Ichiro units, and there were some problems when you got away from the optimum body design. This year they finally had a complete set, which debuted during the winning streak, but there were some reliability problems and the actual Mariners had to take the field again for a week or so. The back-ordered parts have now been installed and things should be fine for the rest of the season, or 3,000 pitches, whichever comes first.

Keeping that in mind
Everyone is for Ibanez DH and Turbo to the bench but
if Ibanez does his whole 'I like playing in the field, and I'm the 'face of the team' thing, why not put Guillen as DH and Turbo to the bench. Jones covers ground in right, Ichiro can shift a little to save Rauls behind, and everyone is happy!

It's not the OPTIMAL solution, but it at least seems a little more probable.

Strikeout, Infield Popup...
Well, I did say it was backwards day.

Okay, so he didn't get the K.

Why the hell did I look at the available SPs for today's game, and just laughed when I saw his name.  And then promptly forgot who he was facing.  And then remembered, and also remembered what happened when he faced the Royals.

I still have to say, though.  One of the best games ANY Mariner pitcher has thrown this year.  Not THE best, of course, but you can't but applaud today's effort (and pray that he's either traded to the NL or finds that magic potion that allows him to "pro"gress towards the mean to make up for the total sucktitude in almost all his previous outings...)

And why the hell did they play "Dream Weaver?"  C'mon.  Like that's a new joke or something...

There's no MLB in Louisiana
Did you know the Superdome can be configured for baseball?  The New Orleans Pelicans of the American Association played there in 1977, and I'm sure they played in front of a lot of empty seats.  No one has played baseball there since, and no one even knows what the dimensions of their ballpark configuration are.

Krueger's a hypocrite, though -- he just said that Weaver was successful by throwing off-speed breaking stuff on the first pitch, and that that's what you gotta do.  Okay, so, uh, Brill Kreme -- why WON'T that work with Felix???

Regardless of what happens to Weaver after this,
This game is instantly on my top three list for this season so far.  Six game losing streak, Weaver 0-6 himself.  Both he and the M's were bound to win this one against a strike-throwing lefty tonight, but that was a hell of a lot more than regression to the mean.  Was I the only one half afraid the Pirates would rally against Weaver and an aback-taken bullpen?  HUGE way to end a six-game losing streak.
