In Non-Mariner Baseball News...

Sam Perlozzo finally got the big, ugly axe from the Orioles...  Bullpen coach Dave Trembley takes over in the interim, and their top candidate for permanent replacement is Joe Girardi.

We all knew this move was inevitably going to happen.  The only surprise, for me at least, is that it took them this long to get him out.  The Orioles are 15 1/2 games out in the East, and their season is over.  All of this after spending $42 million on their (terribly mismanaged) bullpen.

So for all of us M's fans... It could always be worse

Well
You had to sense a mutiny was imminent when KEVIN MILLAAAH went off to the media about how much the team sucked.

Man, the Orioles are a hopeless org.  It certainly could be worse.

I find this interesting
Perlozzo in his 286 games with the Orioles he led them to a .427 winning percentage. In Mike Hargrove's first 324 games with the Mariners he led them to a .454 winning percentage.

The Orioles are always criticized for being a poorly run organization but they clearly understood that Perlozzo wasn't the best person for the job in Baltimore and decided to go in a different direction. The Mariners gave their field boss a one year contract extension.

Uggh
I don't think I've ever defended Hargrove but honestly, how the hell is he supposed to win with the players he has had in the last 3 years? You can blame alot on Dudley (trust me, I do) but the overall record has alot more to do with the talent on the field than his moves/non-moves.

And Perlozzo
was given a roster full of stars?

uh
nope. The O's are probably a bit worse than the M's with regards to talent level. I'm not saying Perlozzo < Grover or vice versa. I just don't think the manager has as much impact as alot of people think. For example, we've already kicked the batting-order-means-little deadhorse.

To me, the manager does have alot of control over the clubhouse atmosphere so if that sucked in Baltimore, then Perlozzo needed to go. If our players started speaking out about that (no hidden tree/root thing), I would expect the same fate for Grover.

i somewhat agree
but there are instances in which a manager can affect the fate of the team, and I think Perlozzo was a good example of that.

There was the game that they had a 5 run lead in the 9th against the Red Sox with the starter pitching comfortably, and Perlozzo goes to the bullpen.  I think in the same situation, most managers would have just let Guthrie, who was pitching a stellar game and had only thrown 91 pitches, wrap it up.

This may only be one example, but just look at how many games they've lost in late innings... He wasn't making the right moves.  Maybe he didn't have a whole lot of talent, but at some point, it becomes apparent that its no coincidence that they lose all those games.

Well
Richie Sexson never went to the media and talked about how much his team is playing like shit.

I think Perlozzo's firing was more of a 'team is starting to turn against him' thing than a 'you're not a good manager' thing.

I'm not saying that Perlozzo
is a quality ML manager. But let's be honest, Ichiro has pretty much said that he has no respect for him. Grant it, he's getting results this year, but I just think it's kind of funny to see one team punt a guy because things aren't working and another team resign the guy but do it quietly so the fans don't explode.

Well
Team Perlozzo = 29-40 (.420)
Team Hargrove = 35-31 (.530)

Team Hargrove has improved every year, albeit not fast enough.  Team Perlozzo is in the crapper.

Team Perlozzo had Kevin Millar going off on the team in plain english.  Team Hargrove has Ichiro spinning cryptic nursery rhymes where we assume it's about Hargrove again.

Seriously, this team isn't going to be much better, if at all, with a different manager.

Respectfully...
I completely disagree.  If the team had someone like Girardi managing I'd still think we have a shot this year.

Baltimore...
When I was in DC last year, I made a stop in Baltimore just to go to Camden Yards.  Beautiful stadium.  Great fan base.  But the worst (okay, behind Jeffrey Loria, second worst), owner in baseball, even worse than the Nintendo guy.  I want Baltimore to succeed because I really hate NY and Boston, but I just don't see it happening with Angelos at the helm.
