Burn The Tree

Editor's note: I unlocked this thread again, but will lock it again if it gets out of control. There ARE other admins on this site, even if Jeff's power is out.

From a recent private e-mail thread after the M's June 12 extra inning victory over the Cubs which has sparked misguided discussion of the playoffs...read from bottom up...

Subject: RE: MARINERS

Yeah, I figured you'd come to your senses...

Any hope the team gives the fan base on the field will divert the team from making the hard decisions it must make.  I advocate total breakdown on the field leading to a scorched earth policy for the organization, much like burning down the forest to promote rich soil for new growth.

I'd love it if Ichiro used my comments as an extension of his 'roots/branches/tree/water' manifesto:

"We must burn down the tree to promote rich soil for new growth..."  something like that...

Subject: RE: MARINERS

Vidro, Suxson, WhoreAssYHo, and Weaver need to go away...now.

How bad could the M's use Raffy Soriano right now?  Good gawd, that one stings...

Subject: RE: MARINERS

God, I hope so.  Anyone other than that awful Richie Suxson...

They're good.  You see Vidro run the bases?  Why the f--- is he on the team?  I'd rather have Burke at DH right now.  In less than a month Adam Dunn will be a Mariner anyway..

Yeah, that's worked for the Rangers, hasn't it?
Consider: the Rangers hired Jon Daniels as their GM in 2005.

They haven't smelled a whiff of playoffs in 2006 or 2007, and they look like they are a couple years away at best. Not every smart young GM is going to have it all work out like Shapiro has- and even HE hasn't made the playoffs, and could easily whiff this year.

I'm not saying I <3 Bavasi and Hargrove, but having suffered through a miserable Mariners team with some good young talent that kept blowing it up every so often through the 1980's, think about what you are saying. Detroit and Milwuakee spent 10+ years being bad, and KC and the Pirates still ARE bad. Be careful what you wish for when you wish for 4-5 years of a bad team so you can make "hard decisions". It might turn into 10.

We already have a bad team.  It will only get worse.  I do not want to encourage the retention of Bavasi & Hargrove with on overperforming team, do you?

What?

Have you been actually watching the games? The M's have some flaws and weaknesses (as do most teams), but I wouldn't even get close to calling them "bad".

Yeah we could do better than Sexson, Vidro, Weaver etc, but you can't just "dump" them and start over.

It's absolutely amazing how blinded Seattle fans become with a little success!  I don't care about this false hope - it can only lead to the continuation of a horrible regime of indeciciveness (Bavasi) and incompetence (Hargrove) and empty platitudes (Lincoln) and bruised air(from Sexson whiffs).  IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT!!!

by eponymous coward on Jun 13, 2007 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Um, what?
Overperforming is one thing, but the M's clearly have the best offense in the AL West, even if you realize they won't hit .327 like they have for the past month.

Oakland still has awful players in their everyday lineup. So does LA. Vidro's not good, but as a weak link, he's LIGHT YEARS beyond Hillenbrand or Kendall, for instance.

The bullpen's already good. Felix is going to be better. Batista is a good bet to be better. That's 85-90 wins, and I think it's a legitimate shot in this division.

by eponymous coward on Jun 13, 2007 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Mariner Offense?
The Mariner offense is clearly overperforming.  Why do Mariner hopemongers insist on projecting a fluky hitting/winning streak onto the remainder of the season when history clearly shows that hitters hit what they hit, not what they're streaks hit...

Ignorant hope floating followed by ignorant bitching over and over.  Mariner baseball fans are reactive and childish.

Hmm, let's see,
Let's go up the middle in the AL West (C/2B/SS/CF), shall we?

LAA: Napoli, Kendrick, Cabrera, Matthews
SEA: Johjima, Lopez, Yuni, Ichiro
OAK: Kendall, Ellis, Crosby, Bradley or Swisher or whoever the A's are playing who isn't on the DL
TEX: Laird, Kinsler, Young, Lofton

So... who's the best team up the middle in the AL West?

I pick us. Please to be explaining why you wouldn't.

Notice I didn't mention Felix, JJ or Beltre in that, either.

This team isn't as bad as you think it is.

by eponymous coward on Jun 13, 2007 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd probably trade all four of our guys
(if I knew I couldn't resign Ichiro) for Kendrick and Napoli.

by Bhamster on Jun 13, 2007 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions

No.
Kendrick, age 23, career stats: .281/.314/.416
Lopez, ages 23, career stats: .270/.307/.400... but that includes Jose's crappy age 20 and 21 seasons, when Kendrick was in the minors. Lopez is OUTHITTING Kendrick at the same age, in a tougher home park, too.

There's really no reason to prefer Kendrick to Lopez, IMO. Jose has a good shot at a pretty good, Bret Boone/Aramis Ramirez kind of career.

by eponymous coward on Jun 13, 2007 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Kendrick has more talent than Lopez.
But yeah, Kendrick has not outperformed Lopez so far.

If it was all about pure talent....
Chris Snelling would be on his way to his 3rd All Star game or something, along with Ryan Anderson.

I still think Lopez is being seriously undersold by a lot of people. The list of players who can play ball AT ALL at 22/23 has a lot of HOFers on it- and Lopez went to an All Star game at that age, and might be 2 for 2 if he stays hot.

Kendrick cannot hit for any real power.  He is at the mercy of good balls-in-play fortune.  Lopez can, and is not as much.

by Gomez on Jun 13, 2007 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

"Kendrick can't hit for any real power."
Kendrick is a young Gary Sheffield, with the same stocky build and explosive wrists.

HoLo is a young Edgardo Alfonzo...

by troutmask96 @ Lookout Landing on Jun 13, 2007 2:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Kendrick has doubles power at best
At Kendrick's age, Sheffield was flashing 30+ HR power in San Diego.  Here, Kendrick is up showing Juan Pierre power only because the Angels powerflushed their runt of the year and had nobody left to play 2b.  Kendrick also spent 2+ years in rookie ball, trying and failing to find this Sheffield-like power.

I'll be impressed if this power manifests itself at any point... and totally shocked.

by Gomez on Jun 13, 2007 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

HR's as a Measure of Power
It was not my argument that Kendrick will hit more HR's than HoLo (though I think he eventually will).  How are HR's alone a true measurement of a player's power contribution?

by troutmask96 @ Lookout Landing on Jun 13, 2007 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

All of his SLG are a few doubles and triples
If you want to microcompare Sheff's, lopez's and Kendrick's numbers in the minors, you go right ahead.

You're telling he's the next Sheffield.  Sheffield was a powerhouse.  Kendrick is not.  He's not even close.

by Gomez on Jun 13, 2007 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

PS: "Scorched earth" probably means:
  • Ichiro's gone. Losing a HOF player is not a trivial matter. Jones is a good player, but I think he will struggle for a bit (like Cammy his first couple years) because the park will hurt him and he's the type of player who will need an adjustment.
  • If you punt 2008 for much the same reason you punted 2007, because it's a Three Year Plan and this is the year you jettison bad contracts cluttering the roster like Sexson/Washbur/Batista/Vidro and suffer the consequencesm, ala Shapiro, so's Johjima.
  • It's 2009...and Felix suddenly isn't as cheap as he used to be, as it's time for him to get big arbitration raises. Betancourt and Lopez start getting serious money, too. Whoops.
No doubt Bavasi and Hargrove have flaws, but you tell me: did anyone pick the 2003 Marlins as World Champions when they signed I-Rod?

With that in mind, I honestly believe that Bavasi is the best that we will have with this current regime and so I have no problem with him staying. Bavasi's job is to build a team that wins
and the team is winning. He may not have taken the route that we wanted him to, but we are to the destination. Same thing about Hargrove.

I am sick of the losing and trying to contend this year won't bankrupt the future. Weaver is off the books at the end of the year. Sexson at the end of next with Ho making next to nothing. Not only that but we have an tremendously talented core of players down in the minors that are a few years away.

Blowing up this team would be entirely redundant.

Okay, fine...
Okay, fine, let's AT LEAST blow up the Biumvirate of Blow - Bavasi/Hargrove...

The Mariner's are on a little winning streak DESPITE Hargrove.  The way Hargrove makes decisions will cause the team to repidly return to the level of the quality of its players and on the field manager.

I Couldn't Agree More...
This whole mirage of success we're achieving right now could reap a bitter harvest (to use your water/tree/roots analogy).  If we finish 82-80 and 2 games out in the west, but barely miss the playoffs, it will only provide justification for the whole Lincoln/Bavasi, Grover troika to come back and "see this process through".  That will mean another off-season of poor FA signings, wretched trades, and further barrening of our minor league talent.

I say cut down the tree (Lincoln), strip its branches for kindling (Bavasi) and carve it into a boat that sails away (Grover)...

Bavasi has said many times, publicly, that Jones is untouchable.  His history backs this up; at the time Bavasi traded them, nobody though Choo or AsCab had any future with this team.

If you're going to lose sleep, do it over Rob Johnson, Broussard, Balentien, Reed, and (maybe) Feierabend, I don't think we have to worry about losing anybody else too much.

by troutmask96 @ Lookout Landing on Jun 13, 2007 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

That was just a BAD trade
many people, including Dave Cameron, advocated trading Soriano last year, to patch our starting pitching hole.  Bavasi is just a bad judge of talent, Soriano was, rightly, tradeable.

Dude, the Mariners are WINNING.  Do I think they'll win the World Series?  No.  Do I care right now, after four years of horrible baseball?  Good god, NO I DO NOT.  Let this ride continue as long as it lasts, because you know what?  It's actually exciting to watch this team now, and that hasn't happened in five years.

Sit down, put your misplaced indignance aside, and just watch the game.  You might find that you'll have fun.

Need we mention
the flaws, inherent and otherwise, of every single winning team in the history of baseball?  Every single one has had them, anywhere from top to bottom, and has won despite these flaws.

Ripping the team because it is not just right is folly.  No shit things are wrong with this team, and bears shit in the woods.

And they're a talented team anyway, and they're winning anyway, because the positive performances of good players heavily outweigh the negatives and bad players and slumps.

Here you go...
By your logic, I should fawn over the "winning streak" Mariners and make them my knight in shining armor as opposed to the Yankees fan of a few weeks ago who had the opposite problem: a colossally constructed team that was underperforming for a brief span.

Again, here is the crux of the underlying problem:  Mariner fans would rather have an illconceived team overperform than a monster roster that underperforms, IF ONLY FOR A FEW WEEKS OF SWEET WINNING BLISS.

Mariner fans would rather have an illconceived team overperform than a monster roster that underperforms

Last I checked, there were two columns in the standings - W and L.  There's no column for "quality of team" and no factor for "well-constructed roster".  Sports is a bottom-line business, and as last year's Cardinals proved (and this year's Cardinals continue to prove), a "monster roster" can only take you so far.

When was the last time the Yankees won anything, despite having a monster roster?

Also known as "Pedro Calderón"

One of the biggest memebers of the old PI forums. Also one of the biggest morons the blogosphere has ever seen. Built up quite a gathering with a few other idiots like "Savvanah" "Mariners World". A fervent hater of Bavasi. Bashed every single move Bavasi has ever done in his entire career, with the exception of the Beltre signing. If you disagreed with him, you were instantly labeled a "Bavasi apologist" and a "sheep".

The guy was the Mariners version of The Rev, except 10 times worse. At least The Rev knows what he's talking about half the time when it comes to the Angels. This guy didn't have clue. He showed up at Jason Churchill's blog a while back, and the two exchanged barbs for a while until Jason banned him. He started his own site and proceeded to mock the rest of the blogosphere(at one point he started called USSM, USSBavasi). After a while he shut down his site because nobody paid attention to it.

Actually regarding M's Rev
That site was up for awhile before Prospect Insider.  Problem was, nobody knew about it.  I did and constantly used his statements to make him the fool.

It's the same jackoff who said LaHair is the number one prospect, with Michael Wilson not to far behind.

Also said Ronald Garth would start in Tacoma this year.  In High Desert, Garth couldn't slug his anorexic grandmother's weight.

Logan, Pedro, and anybody who liked him is a huge dirty douche.

I actually think half of the people who "followed" him, were him.

by jp17 on Jun 13, 2007 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Ummm, one little correction
Logan was never a part of the old PI Forum.

When we first stared, it was actually a happy group of us.

Then SuperFan arrived, along with some guy who claimed he saved baseball in Seattle.

Logan arrived in the PI blogs IIRC.

What was that stat he "created?"  LMAO.

Go Fo Broke!

by eknpdx on Jun 13, 2007 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

He created
PHA=Power Hitting Average.

The problem was, he couldn't even calculate batting average.  Seriously, the dumbass got it wrong, yet created a new stat.  I think there was a power pitching average too.

His blog was shut down shortly after a PI meltdown.  They banned him, and he threatened to sue them while making like 30 new handles in a day.  His blog shut down within a week of that.

He also had a guy who followed him that said he was going to come to my house and kill my wife and I.

JI probably remembers that one.  Ahh, the good old days.

by jp17 on Jun 13, 2007 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I would have loved to read his book.
But I would have had to pay him money, which is a very bad thing. I don't know how cafepress works, but I don't want someone like that to have the slightest bit of information about my buying/paying habits.

But I happen to think it's an idiotic point.

Mariners fans have suffered through many, many years of mediocre-to-horrific baseball (25 out of the 30 years of this franchise, more or less), and now all of a sudden the sun shines a bit and the M's are playing well, so....blow 'em up, because it can't last and will only hide the "real" problems this roster has?

C'mon, that's just dumb.  I want my favorite baseball team to win more often than it loses, and that's exactly what they're doing.  If that makes me an ignorant fan, so be it, but I like being excited about watching the Mariners again.
