Around SBN: Tiger Woods, Tony Romo Grouped Together At Pebble Beach

6/10: Open Game Thread

First Pitch: 1:05pm PDT

Ichiro CF Giles 2B Lopez 2B Cruz RF Guillen RF Gonzalez 1B Ibanez LF Bard C Sexson 1B Cammy CF Betancourt E-6 Kouzmanoff 3B Burke C Greene SS Ballgame 3B Sledge LF King Felix P Young P ---------- ----------

Hernandez (3-3, 4.40)       Young (6-3, giant)

Assuming Jamie Burke gets the start today, we're going to have a potent bench trifecta consisting of a 137 OPS+, a 114 OPS+, and a spherical fatass batting .289. After Adrian Gonzalez and Jose Cruz, the Padres don't have a single starter with an OPS+ over 94 or a batting average over .276. I know it's generally not polite to laugh at the misfortune of others, but in this case, how can you not?

Of course, all it takes is a handful of predictable four-seamers for Felix to make even the sorriest bat look powerful, so uh, no dicking around today, kid. We don't have the breathing room.

LET'S GO MARINERS!!

Go M's
A felix no-hitter with our one run coming off a Felix home run would be nice.

I will settle for the no-4seam-establishment route though, a solid outing, and an M's win.

My parents didn't want to move to Florida, but they turned sixty, and that's the law.

Oh Jeff
Are you just trying to incite those over at Gaslump?

Here's their game preview from yesterday:

I hate the American League.  The designated hitter rule, the lack of strategy, the pompous fans, the lazy pitchers and the Mariners, ugh it makes me physically ill. The Mariners should just forfeit this series and save us all a lot of time.

Seriously, I can't believe we lower ourselves by playing a Little League team like this.  It's like George Clooney dumpster diving with Britney Spears.  It's disgusting and nobody wants to see it.

by TheMarinator on Jun 10, 2007 10:41 AM PDT reply actions

Still don't understand "lazy pitchers"
What does that even mean? They don't hit? They also don't get an automatic out while pitching either.I seriously don't know how anyone can say the DH simplifies the game with a straight face. Its one of my biggest pet peeves.

And pompous fans? Um, they refer to their league as the senior circuit, and not because of the San Francisco Giants outfield.

Uhh...unicorns?

You don't have much command on the fastball today.

You also got a K on a slider and a weak comebacker on a changeup.

by Goose on Jun 10, 2007 1:23 PM PDT reply actions

Honestly...
I don't think his approach will change until there's a complete turnover in the organization's coaches and suits, or until he gets desperate, listens to Kenji like he did opening day and in Boston, and realizes "Holy shit, this works!"

So yeah, very unlikely.

by BrettJMiller on Jun 10, 2007 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

by Double06 on Jun 10, 2007 1:23 PM PDT reply actions

I don't care if he throws all fastballs
as long as they are 2-seamers. They have a special kind if bite today.

by Susheel Ramasahayam on Jun 10, 2007 1:24 PM PDT reply actions

It's not so much that his fastball sucks
It's that he has no control of it compared to his other pitches. When he can get it to go where he wants it to, he'll put in games like Boston, when he doesn't it'll appear over the plate, and boom.

by Graham MacAree on Jun 10, 2007 1:24 PM PDT reply actions

I don't think its that
I think hitters sit on his fastball because his breaking stuff is so friggin good. But I honestly don't know, that's just a guess.

That's because Felix's 4-seamer
Is well below average.  It's fast, but has almost no movement and he can't locate it on the corners.  To make that fastball sucessful, Felix has to be able to throw it into a tea cup.

Would the team honestly be any worse if Mike Morse was in the Utility spot right now?  With Ellison and Broussard to play the outfield, is there any justification for having Willie on the Roster?  And if Lopez needs a day off, play Betancourt at 2B and Morse at SS.  They did that about 50 times in 2005.

Reading Gaslamps gamethread is hilarious
"The Mariners...

They don't field very well, with the exeption of their closer their bully is below average, they run the bases like the Bad News Bears...and we're on the verge of being swept by these guys at home."

Our bullpen is below average? News to me. And for how good your bullpen is, it's pretty much the single reason why you got your asses handed to you.

"Honkytonk

Badonkadonk"

Kill yourself. Getting swept is what you get for posting that in a game thread. That's almost as bad as "Git er dun"

And of course, from my evil counterpart:

"i really hate the mariners

as of now, i really and truly hate them.  because when we beat them, it's not that satisfying.  it's not like beating the dodgers, d-bags, or giants--and there isn't the satisfaction of beating a good NL team we might face in the playoffs.  and when we lose to the mariners, it's just frustrating beyond belief.  we lose to the mets or braves and i figure, get 'em next time. get 'em in the playoffs. you lose to the mariners and...you've lost to the mariners. agh. it drives me insane."

by jtopps on Jun 10, 2007 6:10 PM PDT reply actions

I saw that earlier
What a bogus ejection of Lilly.  He inadvertently plunked Renteria on an 0-2 pitch with 2 outs: if he meant it he would've thrown at him on the 1st pitch.  I love how they had him miked and the ump said that he obviously meant it.

Uh, he obviously didn't, dumbass.  Lilly also looked pretty nonplussed for a guy who had it out for Renteria.

And then Renteria clobbered the rookie SS on his steal of second anyway, and then didn't get tossed.  What horseshit.  Seriously, fuck the Braves and fuck that ump.

they take alot of rivalries pretty seriously
like the dodgers for example, they see them as scum of the earth, yet any dodgers fan i've met sees them as nothing more than just a divisional opponent.  I found the accusation of AL fans being pompous right smack dab in the middle of about the most condesending arrogant NL superiority rant i've seen in a while to be quite humourous.  Just makes the sweep that much sweeter though.

Simple explainantion
Bavasi took away his favorite toys. Mateo and White are gone, so there's fewer crappy relievers to get high-leverage innings. Even if he wanted to screw things up, he doesn't have enough unreliable relievers any more. He's forced to be better.
