This division really blows.

The Mariners have played like shite and they're 1/2 game out of first. Anaheim and Oakland have the injury excuse. If our GM wasn't so monumentally stupid, we'd be comfortably on top right now. I hope that dufus dies in a fire. Without the crap call at second we'd have lost 4 in a row and five of six. 85 wins will probably be enough this year. Too bad we won't even be close.

We are .500
So that means 3/4 teams in the division are .500 or greater. As opposed to 2/6 in the NL Central or 1/6 in the AL East believe it or not.

No one in this division
is more than one game over though.

Re: Anaheim and Oakland have the injury excuse
Well, our automatic-win player isn't scheduled to come back until the 15th.

The pythag numbers say we should blow.
I have a hard time believing this is sustainable, but they don't make you give your wins back, at least.

But how much do they tell you?
Pythag numbers account for too much Weaver (he'll be gone pretty soon) and too little Felix.

Jeff
Quite saying he will be gone soon.  You said that last year about hargrove.

If Weaver is struggling when Felix comes back
do you really think they'll let him keep starting?

by Jeff on May 9, 2007 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Depends
on how much HoRam continues to suck and on how competent Baek can look.

by Gomez on May 9, 2007 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Depends on whether...
Felix becomes Weaveresque.

Just keep him away
from tequila and bong hits, and make sure his fastball's not 88 and straight.

you can't equate the two
FM is a leadership position and grover has to quantifiably blow for a while for the team to 86 him.

Weaver is a 5th starter on a 1yr contract and a sucky track record. He won't leave the team, but don't expect him to stay in the rotation when Felix comes back. Unless he gets better and Ho Ram gets worse, which is entirely possible.

Well, let's see
Washburn is a CYA candidate right now. I'm not seeing that lasting, either.

The rotation when Felix comes back is:

King Felix
4th Starter (Batista)
4th Starter (Washburn)
Replacement Level starters: whoever's around between Baek, HoRam and Weaver

We're still bound and determined to play a horrible DH every day.

Raul's looking like he might have Boone-Olerud Disease. So is Richie.

Oh, and the team's 20th in MLB in OPS, with the only upside being we're competitive with the rest of the division in having a crappy, impatient and bad offense so far.

Yeah, this team could gut out an 83-79 division winning record...but realistically, this team hasn't improved collectively from 2006. It's more a matter that the division sucks... and with a touch of bad luck, this could be a 75-87 team.

See, the thing is I'm not optimistic this group of clown can actually find a serviceable replacement for Weaver who'd be a reasonable option in the rotation, which is what they really need.

So
Washburn has to come back down to Earth but Ibanez and Sexson won't get any better?

by Mariner John on May 9, 2007 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know what's going to happen.
I just don't think that collectively, the team's better than 2006. Felix is better, but the rest of the rotation (Batista/Washburn/HoRam/Garbage) might be worse than Washburn/Meche/Moyer/Pineiro. Vidro for Everett is looking to be a wash, and Guillen being an improvement on Reed may be cancelled out by Richie and Raul going south. The bullpen is clearly weaker minus contributions from Soriano and Lowe.

Add in some selective injuries, and the team WON'T be better.
