Horacio Ramirez Suck-Diddly-Ucks.

But gosh, it's not like you could've totally seen this coming ahead of time or anything.

What a horrible pitcher. And what a horrible trade.

Just sent the team
another email about what I think of Bill Bavasi's performance and mental prowess. I wonder if they've changed their form letter since last winter.

by Rollo Tomasi on May 8, 2007 5:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Question For Rollo
Whats the e-mail address? I'd like to send them something too.

by maxthedrummer on May 8, 2007 6:24 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i wonder if they actually check that
what a horrible job to have to do that.

by mutt1823 on May 8, 2007 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno
It'd be pretty easy to file the e-mails.  You just make a bunch of e-mail folders.

Wow
I got TWO form letter responses. And in one of them, they misspelled my name.

Update on the "Bavasi Three"
Weaver, Batista, and HoRam in 2007:

79 1/3 Innings
4.7 K/9
3.4 BB/9
8.85 RA (!)
$16.9 million

I hate you, Ho
He gives away leads faster than any Ho in the history of Hos.

by JLC on May 8, 2007 7:14 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Ya know what
I think that he has a lot higher chance to be useful than we are feeling right now.

Consider this (not including today's stats):

Lifetime BB/9: 3.56
2007 BB/9: 6.20

Lifetime BABIP: .281
2007 BABIP: .388

He also is giving up a few more FB but his HRs haven't looked too out of control.  Besides the walks and hitter's luck he's the same pitcher we thought he'd be basically.  If he gets the walks under control he's going to be useful.  Not good, but useful.

by Edgar for Pres on May 8, 2007 7:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Well
saying "he's the same pitcher we thought he'd be" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement, at least not for me.

by Jeff on May 8, 2007 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm just trying to say that
He's better than Weaver.  Not good but he could give us something around what Washburn gave us last year in terms of performance.  Its not "good" but I don't think it'll stay like this.

by Edgar for Pres on May 8, 2007 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not real confident.
League switches don't treat guys with his stuff very kindly. He was already living on the edge in the NL.

by Jeff on May 8, 2007 7:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And consider...
with Soriano in the pen, Morrow could be getting stretched out in Tacoma right now...

by eponymous coward on May 8, 2007 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who was it
that said they heard that Raffy was traded for being a bad clubhouse influence?

by Gomez on May 8, 2007 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've gone over that trade a million times
with a million people, and no one's ever told me anything to that effect.

by Jeff on May 8, 2007 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Neither have I
until like a week ago.  It was strange.

by Gomez on May 8, 2007 7:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

USSM and Soriano
Didn't Dave Cameron imply that one of the reasons Soriano got traded was because he wasn't available enough for Grover's linking? I think that came out after they signed Reitsma and Bavasi fell all over himself praising Chris' willingness to take the ball whenever asked. I'll go search for it...

by stu hamm on May 8, 2007 7:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah.
That was definitely one of the primary reasons behind the trade.

by Jeff on May 8, 2007 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Found it
It's here - http://ussmariner.com/2007/01/06/reitsma-makeup-chart/#comments

It's a lengthy statement by Dave but my favorite part of the post is...

"It's B.S. They are, once again, valuing personality over talent, and letting their frustrations get in the way of evaluative decisions.

They all deserve to be fired. Every last one of them."

by stu hamm on May 8, 2007 7:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but he's in the AL now
And the 50 gillion extra base hits he gave up today isn't making me any more confident.

by JLC on May 8, 2007 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
since the Mariners like trading away my favorite players just to spite me, im expecting to see Jose Lopez traded for Jorge Julio next offseason.

As for the poll, great stuff. I love the wit on this site.

by Slica on May 8, 2007 7:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, Bavasi
You really did trade a good reliever for a guy who blows leads and keeps the team out of ballgames on a regular basis.

by ThundaPC on May 8, 2007 7:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Send Morrow to Tacoma now
I don't mind punting our #4 and 5 guys this year, if it means starting Brandon and Ryan next season.

We're not obligated to bring Ho back next year, right?

by Katal LM on May 8, 2007 8:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The scary thing?
Bavasi didn't make this trade in a vacuum. The idea just didn't hit him out of the blue. Somebody had to give him the info and player evaluations that led him to the trade.

And THAT person (or worse yet, persons) may still be around next year....

I don't know
if I got hired by company X to replace Manager Y who was basically fired for incompetence, the last thing I would ever do is listen/continue to employ subordinate Z.

by Matthew on May 8, 2007 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're assuming...
...that you get a choice in retaining that person.

I'm not sure that this organization is functional or agile enough to allow an incoming GM to do a housecleaning that's needed.

by rtang on May 8, 2007 11:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

you may not be able to fire him
but you sure as hell don't have to listen to him

by Matthew on May 9, 2007 8:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Assuming...
...Armstrong & Co. don't hire him as the next GM...

by rtang on May 9, 2007 8:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I figure that ...
if/when Ho implodes after two or three more starts, he'll go on the DL. The team will says his elbow has been hurting, he's been trying to pitch his way through it, but it's not getting better so they are shutting him down for a bit.

It may or may not be true, but that's a face-saving way to get him out of the rotation.

by Steve Nelson on May 9, 2007 6:06 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

You are probably correct
I bet the reason they didn't do this with Weaver is because the potheaded dumbass would've gone to the media and said, "No, I'm not hurt!  See? ::throws 83 mph 'heater'::"

by Gomez on May 9, 2007 9:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remember when
there was that rumor of getting Tim Hudson? So far in 2007 3.16 FIP 35/12-K/BB and even though I put FIP I just thought I'd add 1.70 ERA.

Welcome to the AL, Hoacio Ramirez
Bottom of order gets to Ramirez

Bottom-third hitters Craig Monroe, Omar Infante and Brandon Inge went 7-for-9 against Ramirez with four doubles, a triple and six RBIs. In Ramirez's previous start in Boston, the bottom four hitters were 7-for-10 against him.

"Pretty big difference," Ramirez said. "Basically (in the NL) you've got the eighth guy you can kind of pitch around, and you've got the pitcher on deck, which is almost a sure out. Over here in the American League, these guys put up a tough lineup, one through nine, and they don't give up at-bats."

....

"He was throwing the ball well as far as his velocity and economy of pitches, but when he needed to make a pitch he was up in the zone and in over the plate, and that's just not good," Hargrove said. "You've got to be aggressive and get ahead of hitters. When Horacio got ahead of hitters, he got outs."

Ramirez felt like he was being fairly aggressive -- for the first time as a Mariner, he didn't walk a batter -- but simply made bad pitches when it counted.

"I'm just going to have to try to figure something out," he said. "I'm just going through one of those dry spells, and hopefully it'll end soon. ... I've got to make better pitches, flat-out."

Good luck with that.

I wouldn't expect a team of 9 A-Rods
to hit that well against league-average pitching, and yet Monroe, Infante and Inge did it against Ho.
