Julio feels sorry for punching his wife...

http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/mariners/2007/05/mateo_speaks_apologizes.html

Geoff sums it up pretty well.  So i guess we are going to help him out, or at least it is what the Mariner's are saying as of now.

I hope we release his ass.

Mariners hypocrisy
Derek Z. notes the Mariners hypocrisy - with the Mariners, as with most clubs, domestic violence involving a player is acceptable as long as it's not generating current headlines and the team thinks the player can contribute on the field.

Mateo's been cooked for awhile.  He just finally got poked with both prongs (current headlines + ineffective skills) of the "done" fork.

Really though
What are they supposed to say?!

If they release Mateo, then it's hypocrisy. But I see no signs that they are going to do that.

You kind of missed the point
Uhhhh, the hypocrisy isn't how they deal with Mateo.  The hypocrisy was bringing in guys like Martin and Everett, while proclaiming zero tolerance for domestic violence.

No matter what they do with Mateo, they've already donned their hypocritical spots.

Sadly true
Given some of the people this org has willingly brought in over the years, it would at best be an admission of their own poor judgment in the past, but more likely just straight hypocrisy, if they let him go for this.

That doesn't make it right, but their hands are basically tied here, at least politically and image-wise.  This team has quite a mess on its hands already, and it just got messier.

orrrrrr
maybe they want to let him go, oh, maybe for being a bad pitcher, and they need an excuse, since the local fanbase loves him in a Willie-light kind of way.
